Made the lasagna without the lasagna

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 13:26

What to do?

Just prepped for dinner, did all the mince with tomatoes, onion etc and made the cheese sauce, boiled some potatoes and went to get the lasagna sheets and don’t have any.
Not feeling 100% so cba going to the shops, how can I make it into a proper meal? I have some pasta I could use instead, but what about the potatoes? Save them for tomorrow 🤷🏻‍♀️

The potatoes were to go with the lasagna, my family like some buttery boiled potatoes with it

I don’t think I can slice the potatoes-too soft 😬

Then mash them and make it like a shepherd's pie lasagne. Use the pasta you have and layer it. Spaghetti would work great.

I don’t understand everyone saying no potatoes with lasagna!!

Everyone I know has chips and salad and if feeling it garlic bread too.

I know that is a lot of carbs but so what!!

I serve generous enough portions of lasagne to not require another carb. I don't do double carbs. It's too stodgy for me. I leave the chips if a lasagne came with them.

Zanatdy · 05/01/2026 13:48

Just turn it into a bolognaise bake and use pasta instead of lasagne sheets. Or get an uber eats delivery or whoosh delivery

soupyspoon · 05/01/2026 13:49

MrsTerryPratchett · 05/01/2026 13:47

It’s not in Italy.

But I will admit to being someone who mutters “espresso” and “panino” at people passive aggressively. I did live there so that’s my excuse for being a purist.

We're not in Italy and they have bread there instead, with everything, just like Spain. They're big fans of the double carb, they just do more continentally.

What-mash and the pasta too? -seems weird

Serve the meat sauce with pasta and crush the potatoes with the cheese sauce. Add some garlic bread for scooping up. Then report to MN for a thorough scolding for “triple carbing” 😂

J'accuse?

Cries of 'thats not lasagne' and 'you cant have lasagne with potatoes'

These threads are all the same, all the time, call it what you want, when you want, have it how you want, its ok

By the way I dont take myself or others too seriously, nice piece of advice there.

Chill out soup lady, I was just curious! About the potato’s and your ‘rigid’ claim. I don’t think she’s wrong to eat potato’s, most of us were just curious about what she was boiling the potato’s for. It’s not like you knew either

What about the potatoes?

They were only ever a bland little side, why do you need to alter that?

strongermummy · 05/01/2026 13:50

Make an Italian Inspired shepherds / cottage pie instead
or have a pasta bolognaise using the pasta you already have?
alternatively use the you have like you would have done with the lasagna sheets.

I’d be tempted to part cook them if they are thick tho
basically a pasta tray bake.

yum!

If you went somewhere and they were serving a ‘full English breakfast’ and it was porridge and jam with sausages stuck in it, you wouldn’t be a tiny bit tempted to say, “that’s not a full English”. Not even a little bit? A crepe someone is calling a Yorkshire pudding because it’s got all the ingredients?

Because I would. I also mutter about cottage and shepherd’s pies if they have the wrong meat.

EleanorReally · 05/01/2026 13:51

i dont understand the potatoes, but you have cooked them for a reason,
you could perhaps layer them on top, with cheese on top and bake
or Pistachio which is lovely but the potatoes are your choice

Goldengirl123 · 05/01/2026 13:51

Just have the mince with potatoes

RampantIvy · 05/01/2026 13:51

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 13:50

What about the potatoes?

Can you sautee them?
Or later up meat, then potatoes then bechamel sauce and sprinkle generously with grated cheese.

venus7 · 05/01/2026 13:53

There are no potatoes in lasagne.

ALittleDropOfRain · 05/01/2026 13:53

I think you‘ve just made cottage pie - mince with mashed potatoes on the top.

Im ok, hopefully you're ok

I dont have a problem with the potatoes, I think you misread my potato intent.

She isnt wrong to eat the potatoes. Some people felt she was wrong to eat the potatoes. I say, 'eat the potatoes'.

Im also a big fan of the grocer's apostrophe so thanks for that.

Im just waiting for the inevitable 'its not even Italian', just like crops up in discussions about 'British' or 'English' food despite that dish being around for eons.

The Italians stole pasta from the Chinese and tomatoes is a modern new world food so its not even Italian.

AllIdoistidyup · 05/01/2026 13:54

It's not potatoes with lasagne that is weird. It's boiled potatoes. Who eats them boiled with butter but not mashed? It's by far the least appealing potato option.

That’s all a bit pointlessly deep for me, glad you are ok though!

Littletinytarzanswingingfromanosehair · 05/01/2026 13:55

Add Mexican spices to the sauce to make a chilli add kidney beans if you have them, mash the potatoes pour the sauce over?

Mash them, put them on top, and call it a special shepherds pie.

Its an approximation isnt it, it wont have a name with potatoes because the dish doesnt exist. You could mangle a right mouthful by saying 'a layered mince dish with Italian flavourings but with potato'

Not so catchy.

Or you could just call it a lasagne and shrug when someone points out it has potatoes in it.

And a full English/fry up, call it what you will, I like swee with savoury, so jam = chutney = relish = marmalade = quince = sweet condiments. Nothing is so far from the tree as to be completely out of kilter.

Although Kippers and jam might be a push too far.

I’m not going to chuck them though, hate wasting food
They’re really not bland with melted butter on and eaten with the mince and cheese in a lasagna-so good!
