Made the lasagna without the lasagna

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 13:26

What to do?

Just prepped for dinner, did all the mince with tomatoes, onion etc and made the cheese sauce, boiled some potatoes and went to get the lasagna sheets and don’t have any.
Not feeling 100% so cba going to the shops, how can I make it into a proper meal? I have some pasta I could use instead, but what about the potatoes? Save them for tomorrow 🤷🏻‍♀️

Are you frightened of vegetables, OP? Allergic? Politically opposed?

Erm, hello… baked beans??

Honestly, this has to be one of my favourite threads in a long time, thanks so much for the laughs 😄

Beans are vegetables!

By what possible logic? Beans are legumes. Do you think lentils are vegetables? Chickpeas? Peanuts?

Unless you were joking? In which case, my apologies. 🤣

I’ll just copy/paste:

Going by your last two dinners, your diet is a bit depressing, OP. The thread is wonderful, but the way you eat makes me sad. 😔

Baked beans are legumes (and generally considered UPF because they’re high in salt and sugar).

This really is the thread that keeps on giving.

I love your commitment to buttery potatoes.

AhBiscuits · 07/01/2026 19:58

Beans count as one of your 5 a day.

Potatoes are a veg but are deemed not a veg for the 5 a day thing. They are full of goodness and nutrients. Beans are also a veg but someone will moan about them being in a tin with tomato sauce.

Love FF chips and beans, top meal.

Bobiverse · 07/01/2026 20:04

Bean, lentils, chickpeas etc all count as a vegetable when you’re talking about dietary nutrition and categories.
Potatoes do not count, they’re a carb and good in their own way but they do not replace vegetables.

They dont count politically

They do count nutritionally.

They do count nutritionally.

They’re only really decent with the skin on if you’re talking nutrients, and they are far too starch dense to replace non starch vegetables which are much more nutrient dense.

If we start saying “potatoes count as a vegetable” then kids will be even more unhealthy as lazy parents will just serve mash with every meal instead of trying to feed their children multi coloured, nutrient dense actual vegetables.

soupyspoon · 07/01/2026 20:18

Potatoes are very very good for you, not just with the skin on

Your last paragraph is why politically they didnt make the grade, excluded from the '5 a day' club

But they are a good food.

AhBiscuits · 07/01/2026 20:26

In a study on satiety, boiled potatoes were found to be one of the most filling foods.

I cant eat potatoes unfortunately, a spoonfull or so is just about it. I do potatoes for others by crushing them after boiling and drenching them in very very good olive oil, salt and parsley and just a bit of that is really filling.

Ive never had any complaints about them!!!

All vegetables are carbs

I’d use the potatoes to make some gnocchi and put a layer of those in the place of the lasagne

Oh my God, gnocchi is an abomination! Our hotel on Lake Garda served it and there was a mutiny and four people were kicked out that evening. They only got back in because the hotel owner's son was dating our rep so they smoothed things over. We didn't protest but we didn't eat the horrible gnocchi either. Got it served at a conference in Nov and couldn't even swallow it!

temperance75 · 07/01/2026 21:20

This is one of the most bizarre threads I've read. Pasta shapes is pasta sheets just a different shape. Who in the world apart from OP serves boiled potatoes with lasagne? And who adds cheese to a white sauce and makes a weird bolognaise sauce?!?!?! OP you need some serious cooking lessons!

It’s ok this wasn’t today :)

Tonight’s dish is fish fingers, baked beans and boiled potatoes with melted butter, really don’t get the hate.
Craving a kiddies type meal today 😁

Did you cook these potatoes last Thursday and then forget how to warm them up today as well?

soupyspoon · 07/01/2026 21:22

Im watching an old episode of masterchef, dont even know what year its from

Some nutter has served up a lasagne with open round sheets, crab in between, NO SAUCE on top and no accompanying potatoes

She went out.

John and Gregggg specifically said it was because she didnt serve up spuds with it.

Counted as vegetables, nutritionally vegetables. Same as lentils, chickpeas, other beans and peas

I have investigated Beangate further, and found to my amazement that baked beans are in fact counted nutritionally as a vegetable. Even though they are not vegetables. I still think it's bonkers- surely it's possible to recommend baked beans as a good source of protein/vitamins/minerals without having to count it as a vegetable?

You sound beanist to me.

A right mean bean you are.

We used to have boiled, buttery potatoes, side salad and garlic bread with our lasagne. I'm the youngest, only girl with 3 older brothers. Them guys can eat!
