Made the lasagna without the lasagna

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 13:26

What to do?

Just prepped for dinner, did all the mince with tomatoes, onion etc and made the cheese sauce, boiled some potatoes and went to get the lasagna sheets and don’t have any.
Not feeling 100% so cba going to the shops, how can I make it into a proper meal? I have some pasta I could use instead, but what about the potatoes? Save them for tomorrow 🤷🏻‍♀️

Potatoes with lasagne is my absolute favourite. I’m an over eater unfortunately but two large baked potatoes and butter with lasagne is one of my dream meals.

Bobiverse · 06/01/2026 21:17

You absolutely do use carrots. Those are one of the essential ingredients.

Anything else is what parents call “hidden veg.”

Ok, I’ll give you carrots, but peppers have absolutely no place in a lasagna.

katepilar · 06/01/2026 21:34

Just eat it with whatever you have, potatoes, pasta, cous-cous, rice, bread, salad...
This is the first thread when I just cant believe that this a genuine question you cant answer yourself.

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 13:38

The potatoes were to go with the lasagna, my family like some buttery boiled potatoes with it

I don’t think I can slice the potatoes-too soft 😬

Italy just turned in its grave

soupyspoon · 06/01/2026 21:38

Mussolini wouldnt have stood for this.

So did Ireland. She overboiled the potatoes.

I really wish we still had a laughing emoji 😂

You’re not wrong though.

Justbreathagain · 06/01/2026 21:56

This thread is hilarious. Obsession with potatoes, I have never had potatoes to a side of lasagne and never put cheese in the sauce. So funny. What did you mam say ? Did you ring her ?

ShiraShira · 06/01/2026 21:58

Presumably OP was planning on having double carbs!

SockBanana · 06/01/2026 21:59

I had no idea what sofrito was - just googled and I do use it, but didnt know it had a name.

Love this thread, and the OPs mad dinner. I'd eat it if that's all there was - don't think I'd cook it deliberately though 😆

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 14:32

Why is it bizarre though?? I’ve had this since childhood

Its bizarre because noone else does.

That is what makes something 'odd', when the (vast) majority dont do it. Just because YOU have had that since childhood doesnt chanhe that.

Hence why noone can understand why it would be 'weird' with pasta, but not with lasagna (which is pasta!)

There is a little-known internet law:

Doesn't matter what forum it's on - a thread about lasagna will always end in tears and vendettas.
Lasagna with potatoes might end in WWIII.

A horse’s head in the OP’s bed!

FridayNightFever · 06/01/2026 22:39

I know no one cares by this point but I just have to share my thoughts -
Potatoes as a side - fine. I often have roasties or chips with a lasagne. And sometimes bread too. Love my carbs
Cheese in the sauce - more than fine. Plain bechamel is boring (I'm vegetarian, though, so that might be why). I also add mozzarella to my layers and on top.
BUT lasagna is just a form of pasta so using a different shape would have been an entirely acceptable solution to the problem.
If having potatoes on the side felt weird - put them in the fridge and have them with something tomorrow.
And salad in winter is fine. How odd!
Again, I know all of this is irrelevant now but, my god, I needed to get that off my chest.

OneMintWasp · 06/01/2026 23:01

Bit late to this but pancakes are nice in a lasagne rather than pasta sheets.

Peppers do not belong in a lasagna I agree, and I'm shocked by the confidence posters have with their heathen lasagna recipes

There's nothing worse than looking forward to a delicious lasagna (or bolognese) to find it tastes of bloody red pepper. Almost as bad as sweetcorn

Lovelyindevon · 06/01/2026 23:25

My Mum made us a vegetarian one with spaghetti hoops between the pasta layers.

Screamingabdabz · 06/01/2026 23:28

No man would bother trying to conquer this mountain. Give up. If your cooking and your generally ability to pair food hasn’t been handed down right, then pass on the baton to the other adult in the household. You don’t have to be the default cook and bottlewasher just because you’re a woman.

Oh and lots of people with children have wine. That’s how many of us get through that whole mad phase.

GrooveArmada · 06/01/2026 23:28

AllIdoistidyup · 05/01/2026 13:54

It's not potatoes with lasagne that is weird. It's boiled potatoes. Who eats them boiled with butter but not mashed? It's by far the least appealing potato option.

Edited

Actually, yes, I agree with this. I only ever have them boiled as new potatoes in the summer, with real butter and fresh parsley...and with salad & chicken. I eat salad all year round, btw, But apparently we're not allowed to in winter 🤣🤣🤣

I'm perplexed that someone has to turn to Mumsnet for advice on this, and also by the number of responses for such a dull thread.

Woodfiresareamazing · 06/01/2026 23:33

This thread is truly the gift that keeps on giving. It has to be a Classic ...
Hope you feel better today OP.

This is a very funny thread, and you’ve been a good sport OP.

GanninHyem · 07/01/2026 00:07

Bobiverse · 05/01/2026 22:05

It’s in the sauce. You slow cook the sauce with peppers and carrots, and then blend the sauce if you want it smooth.

You don’t just use onion, garlic and tomato.

Edited

This thread made me laugh.

You have OP, who possibly so delirious from illness she has lost the plot, then people so confidently mocking her cooking while saying red fucking pepper goes in a lasagna. Brilliant

LBFseBrom · 07/01/2026 00:17

I've never heard of potatoes used in lasagne, that's a new one on me.

You've made a ragu. serve it with pasta or potatoes, it doesn't have to be called anything.
