Made the lasagna without the lasagna

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 13:26

What to do?

Just prepped for dinner, did all the mince with tomatoes, onion etc and made the cheese sauce, boiled some potatoes and went to get the lasagna sheets and don’t have any.
Not feeling 100% so cba going to the shops, how can I make it into a proper meal? I have some pasta I could use instead, but what about the potatoes? Save them for tomorrow 🤷🏻‍♀️

😂

OP I've only read your posts in reply to lots of very sensible suggestions, but I just feel the need to say I've had such a laugh! Why can't you eat salad in winter? I've made salad for two meals in the last four days and we were out for a meal tonight and had a side salad served with the meal and it was delicious. And someone said green leafy veg and you immediately thought they were suggesting salad - what about broccoli? sprouts? kale? cabbage? even cauliflower at a pinch? In fact ANY veg? And lasagne is pasta, just a different shape from any other pasta so if you eat potatoes with lasagne why can't you eat them with other shaped pasta? Or you could follow the suggestions of posters who said to make moussaka, which is delicious - layer mince with potato and cheese sauce and sprinkle cheese on top. But you seemed to think that was weird too. I'll go read the end now to see what you did, but thanks for the laugh!

Ok, I’ll give you carrots, but peppers have absolutely no place in a lasagna.

This recipe, which has a wild mushroom béchamel has peppers. You puree the sauce after it's cooked and it's amazing!

I’d use the potatoes to make some gnocchi and put a layer of those in the place of the lasagne

CotswoldsCamilla · 07/01/2026 00:47

I’m very late to the party but could you not have just asked on your street WhatsApp group if anyone could loan you a box of lasagne sheets?

TheMerryJoker · 07/01/2026 00:47

so who fancies lasagna but actual lasanga ?

Picklelily99 · 07/01/2026 00:58

Yet putting mash and lasagne on the same plate isn't weird?

80DaysAroundTheLounge · 07/01/2026 01:13

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 14:47

I’ve taken on the suggestions, I will do the mince with mashed potato on top, then pour the cheese sauce over the top. Don’t know why but it seems a weird dish, no idea what to call it when Dh & Dd ask me

Why the hell do you have to name it unless you are writing a cookbook. It's a meal not a pet. This post is ridiculous.

WhatMummyMakesSheEats · 07/01/2026 05:49

I voted YABU because you had an answer for anything that got suggested, you weren’t going to budge so you may as well have gone to the shop. But I had a few things worth highlighting:
Boiled potatoes with lasagne is weird. Everyone else’s reaction is the same as your reaction to any other pasta ? Lasagne IS pasta. Having said that, I’d definitely have it with chips and see it in pubs sometimes… perhaps only in Scotland though?

I’m baffled at your response to suggestions to have salad with lasagne because it’s winter. Do you not eat salad between October and May?? If my dish went best with salad that’s what I’d be having any time of year. Had quiche with salad last night actually.

also, I am fully aware proper lasagne has white sauce, but I always make cheese sauce as it tastes so good in lasagne. Surprised you are surprised that’s not the authentic (or most common) way though, do you never eat lasagne out?

one of the first posts suggested slicing the potatoes and making moussaka which seemed like the best suggestion!? And somehow you chose to mash the potatoes and plonk them on top!

Use layers of sliced potatoes and call it moussaka

Reheat the cheese sauce, add an egg to it, make moussaka with potatoes then add cheese sauce on top.

AquaForce · 07/01/2026 10:12

Make vodka with the potatoes 🍸

MeandT · 07/01/2026 10:40

@mumsnet nominating this one for classics - mostly on account of the OP being so VERY adamant that boiled potatoes with a pasta bake would be oh so very wrong, yet of course with lasagne is completely normal & not to bat an eyelid at. And also for being an amazingly good sport & still coming back to offer everyone some buttery boiled potatoes by the end of it all ❤️

Slightly baffled about @Brainfogtothemax family digestion mind you...there doesn't seem to be room for much fibre on the plate & I'd be dying for a heap of broccoli beside my lasagne/pasta bake rather than 250cal of potatoes & butter - but maybe that's the answer to today's headline of why bowel cancer rates are going back up & the nation is so regularly overeating by 200cal a day. Broccoli for 2026 gets my vote!

Hoppinggreen · 07/01/2026 11:37

I am intolerant to peppers ( and so much more thats not food) so pureeing them and putting them in a Lasagne is the kind of lunacy that makes me very ill indeed, not to mention offends all of Italy
I DO like boiled buttery potatoes as long as they are still in their skins though

ihavetocookagain · 06/01/2026 18:59

Alcohol cooks off. Also I’m fairly certain in France and Italy it’s commonplace. Can’t believe how ridiculous some people are saying not to include wine because of children. WineWine

There is some debate about how long it takes for the alcohol to burn off and the best cooking method to do so. Don't think its ridiculous to be cautious at all.

Mcoco · 07/01/2026 16:27

Potatoes don't go in a lasagne. Use the sauce and turn it into pasta bolognese.

Mcoco · 07/01/2026 16:33

You could also save everything for tomorrow and pop out for lasagne sheets tomorrow morning instead.

Meanwhile turn the potatoes into a potato salad and hopefully you have some meat or fish in your fridge to cook.

Its odd to eat potatoes alongside lasagne or a pasta bake but I am Italian so maybe ok in the UK 😂

It’s ok this wasn’t today :)

Tonight’s dish is fish fingers, baked beans and boiled potatoes with melted butter, really don’t get the hate.
Craving a kiddies type meal today 😁

Just when this thread couldnt get any more ludicrous, someone declares that they would be just 'dying for a heap of broccoli'

Peak MN as they say.

Are you frightened of vegetables, OP? Allergic? Politically opposed?

Me too, but lets be honest in a world of potatoey deliciousness, boiled potatoes?! Surely on almost every occasion there's a nicer option? Chips, roast, sauteed, mash, jacket? Boiled potatoes are clearly an inferior version. I'll give it to the OP that butter raises them a little though, but still, what a shame to do that to them when they came out of the ground with such potential.

Where are the greens??

I know I keep banging on about it but the UK diet is, generally, really lacking in greens and it does have a link to increase in stomach cancer.

You should be having leafy greens every day, or every second day at least.

*The reason I bang on about it is that my parents barely ever served me anything green, or a lot of veg tbh. It caused me so many issues when I became a young adult/adult and had to change my whole diet and learn what I should be eating. And I’m trying so hard to make sure my kids have everything they should and a varied, colourful diet because my parents messed me up so much. You need to serve greens!
