I can't serve you, actually I will

I don't know if my mum rage is out of control but I went to Asda pizza counter and they were closing so I was told as soon as I joined the queue of 2 people that they were shut. They don't display time and the lights were on, so I was a bit annoyed.

I went to look at the premade pizzas, very annoyed but I didn't say anything to the lady. She then asked how many pizzas I wanted, I reminded her she was shut so why does it matter.

Aibu - either shut and be shut, or serve people?

How is it kind? She told she straight away she wouldn't serve me. So I had to look for premade pizzas. So why then change? And it's "how many do you want" it wasn't "I can squeeze you in if you order just one". It was conditions.

Jeezo. Cringing for you here.

The woman was finishing her shift and she thought she could fit you in. Instead of being grateful this is how you respond?

mumanger · 03/01/2026 19:18

No
She already said she was shut. So why then ask how many pizzas I wanted?

As everyone keeps telling you, most likely she was going to try to make them for you as long as you only wanted 1 or 2.

You were unbelievably rude and unreasonable.

Exactly.

Imagine going into the hairdresser 5 minutes before they close and say you want a service. She says “no I’m sorry, I’m about to close.” But before you walk out the door she shouts: “well what is it you’re actually after?”
Lets examine some possible answers
A ) I just want my fringe trimmed (a 5 minute job)
B) I want a cut and blow dry (a 40 minute job)
C) I want a new client style consultation (a 10-30 minute job she won’t want to rush)

The question is valid because if it is scenario A then quickly trimming your fringe and sending you off won’t have her close too much later than normal and she can still get home in time to make her kids tea.
If, however, you were thinking of scenario B or C then this would not be feasible.

You reply: “Well you said you were closed!” And slam the door, having to deal with your Claudia Winkleman fringe blinding you for another day.

Realistically your pizza girl was done and should have been packing up and cleaning and shutting things down. Not making fresh pizza. She it of kindness had a second thought that she would squeeze you in anyway, provided it’s a reasonable request that she can finish in time.

If you can’t see you’ve been rude and snappy now there’s really no helping you.

Justchillinhere · 03/01/2026 23:22

Well their definitely shut shut now! What a drama, I'm so glad I wasn't on the sidelines, I'd have laughed out of shock at your surly behaviour, why wait around when they've told you it's shut, the assistant must've been uncomfortable,

pimplebum · 03/01/2026 23:29

mumanger · 03/01/2026 19:15

No I don't. Because if it's shut, it's shut. So why be so abrupt and tell me it's shut to then backtrack?

Maybe she was abrupt then took a minute to think about you and your family’s pizza needs and decided to try and be helpful and provide you with the pizza you wanted

maybe she recognised a mum having a bad day and thought “ oops thst was a bit abrupt / rude maybe I can do better and be helpful “.

maybe your vibe made her abrupt to you and maybe she’s the kind of woman who always matches people’s energy

maybe who knows? I wasn’t there

but what I’d really like to know is what on earth are you hoping to get from this thread ???

latetothefisting · 03/01/2026 23:30

have you ever heard the phrase "cut off your nose to spite your face?"

If you'd answered with one or two you could have been enjoying your asda pizza right now rather than being pizza-less and clearly disproportionately angry

101Alsatians · 03/01/2026 19:06

Did anyone else get the pizza cutting slice ad on this thread?Did tickle me.

Yes 😂😂😂

Venicelagoon · 03/01/2026 23:30

I don't understand.....did you get a pizza or not ? Im obviously not the only person who can wander round the whole enormous Asda store and declare there is nothing I want to eat. (But this can happen) on a bad day)Funnily enough the pizzas there are great !

NemesisInferior · 03/01/2026 23:33

Fairly obviously, and as others have said, the poor woman was clearly due to clock off after what was no doubt a very long and tedious shift, but was kind enough to try to help you out only for you to throw it back in her face.

The result of which is that you went home without a custom pizza and she went home to tell her partner/ mum/ cat how much of a twat you were.

ForTheForseeable · 03/01/2026 23:35

Whether the woman was rude or not you seen unreasonably angry about a non event.

tachetastic · 03/01/2026 23:35

mumanger · 03/01/2026 19:18

No
She already said she was shut. So why then ask how many pizzas I wanted?

Her manager was probably there when she told you they were closed, because that's what the rule said. If her manager then stepped away she probably asked how many pizzas you wanted thinking that if it was a small order she could do you a favour and make them quickly before the manager came back.

She was trying to be nice. Why are you struggling with this idea?

I hope you enjoyed your evening eating the pre-made pizza that wasn't quite what you wanted and slamming your fingers into your keyboard or phone and seething in anger. I can guarantee you that the assistant didn't give you a second thought, unless it was to comment to her significant other that there was a really weird woman customer today that she tried to help out but seemed to be really angry about something and kept muttering under her breath.

Alpacajigsaw · 03/01/2026 23:40

Yes that was a very rude response. You could have just said don’t worry I’ll buy one of these ones now.

a 6% approval

HippoandtheScabbyBrats · 03/01/2026 19:32

Do you work in retail/customer service OP? 🤔🙂

Here’s hoping she doesn’t! 🤣😂

Morepositivemum · 03/01/2026 23:50

Because she suddenly thought ‘if she just wants one I can squeeze her in’.

Strawberrydelight78 · 03/01/2026 23:51

She only asked you a question to see if she could do anything else for you. You were rude just accept it.

BriefEncountersOfTheThirdKind · 03/01/2026 23:54

How are 6% of people agreeing with this???

DetectiveDouche · 03/01/2026 23:56

I don't think you are explaining yourself very well OP. Because the way it reads is that she may have been prepared to serve you, depending on the size of your order, even though she was supposed to be closing. That can only be seen (by us) as her trying to be nice.. unless you are explaining it inaccurately. Or maybe you were misunderstanding her? She was offering to make you up the pizzas anyway but you (for some reason) mistook her question as her "being nosy" re you buying ore-made pizzas off the shelf??

rileyy · 04/01/2026 00:07

mumanger · 03/01/2026 19:19

So?

Oh for the love of god. YOU posted this in AIBU. People are telling you that you were. As you requested. If you don’t want people to answer the question you asked then don’t ask it. Doubling down like you are is only making you sound unhinged.

Are you really this obtuse, or just a bit hard of thinking? She was due to shut when you got to the counter. She told you this. She then decided that she would oblige you by staying past her finishing time to make your pizzas if it wasn't a big order. That's why she asked you. Did you think she was just being nosy? Making conversation? Why on earth do you think she asked you?

HowAmYa · 04/01/2026 00:35

What exactly were you planning on achieving when you spoke to her like that? Because it sounds like you just wanted to be a rude c**t when all she did was her job and then possibly found a way to help you out anyway.

Booboobagins · 04/01/2026 00:36

@mumanger YANBU and were rude for no reason.

She said she was shut because you arrived late. That is on you. Be disappointed in yourself for not getting your sh1t together sufficiently so you could buy pizza. Psychologists would say you did it on purpose to punish yourself it's a game.

The woman however wasn't party to your game. She saw how frustrated you were so asked you how many pizzas you wanted so she could consider if she had time to make them for you.

Bless her heart for trying to help you out.

Kibble19 · 04/01/2026 00:42

Not mum rage, just being a cow.

Hope whatever pizza you ended up with was shite. 🤓

My sympathies OP, it can be annoying. I was once waiting in Pizza Hut and the lady said, "How many pizzas do you want? 'Cos we're shutting soon."

I replied, "Well I only wanted one, but since you're shutting soon, PLEASE DON'T BOTHER!"

She said, "Oh we're happy to make you one pizza, I only asked because -"

I replied, "NO! You're shutting soon so go ahead, shut, shut, SHUT!"

She continued trying to serve me, saying, "We can do you a pizza, there's no need to -"

I screamed, "NO, SHUT, GO AHEAD, SHUT, SHUT, SHUT, SHUT!!"

But there's no reasoning with those people.
