We found a secret room in our house, picture included

I've seen these threads before and thought how on earth did you not know! How big must your house be to have a secret room.
Our house is not massive, 4 bed, normal size not really old or anything.
But there's a super creepy room. Hidden at the back of the loft, It's got carpet, wall paper and even spot lights! And a director's chair... just sitting in the middle of it! It's weird.

I've got a weird loft too so am watching this with interest. In mine, previous people had built a room and subsequently ripped most of it out again, but there's suitcases, clothes, all sorts behind the remaining hardboard. DS is convinced there's a body up there and the reason we can't smell it is because it's dessicated over time in the heat (south facing).

So do keep us posted, OP, you might embolden me to have a closer look up there 👻

Oh I forgot,
@bigboykitty the voicemail from the funeral home. When my DH called back it was to see a Joanna in the chapel of rest!
I'm not even kidding!
But I saw someone last year and they told me I have a "J" watching and with me always. But I'm taking that in a kind way not a negative way 😊

Oof. Let me know if you want a full reading 😳😁

I do. I don’t have any Js in my life.

Met some of the neighbours over Christmas.
Turns out my DH knows our neighbours daughter, and her DF new the original owners from the 70s.
DH messaged the daughter and she came back with...
They made the room for their son, they made a hole in his bedroom ceiling above his bunk bed 🤨
So sorry everyone, not as creepy or news worthy after all 🤣

... does the daughter work for the funeral director? And her father is the surveyor who didn't mention the room in the report when you bought the house... and in his spare time, he makes ventriloquist dummies 🤔

The room may have been built in the 70s, but it was not decorated as per the OP's photo in the 70s. The lighting fixtures are not 70s. They look like halogen downlights, hard to say - but not 70s. The wallpaper was not hung in the 70s. There is no way that paper would be so pristine and not caked in dirt and grime on the folding away portion up by the ceiling.

It was clearly fitted out, for whatever purpose, far more recently than the 70s.

But as the OP cannot possibly enquire from the seller or the estate agent or the lawyers involved in the sale about it, we will never know.

It's totally plausible and by far the most obvious explanation. People just seem obsessed by the idea of there being something more sinister going on!

The wallpaper and green paint work looks consistent with late 70s/early 80s to me. It's clearly peeling off. Sealed loft spaces don't get particularly dusty/dirt as so much household grim is generated by people (dead skin, clothing lint, friction on carpets and furniture from movement).

Spotlighting was also very 1970s, it's very hard to tell the era from the pictures - though it might have been upgraded more recently for electrical safety reasons.

I grew up in 70s/80s and two of my friends had a semi-converted loft space not dissimilar to this which was used as a hang out for their kids.

seafoamhair · 05/01/2026 11:32

The 1970s were 50 plus years ago. We did not have lights like that in the 70s. The wallpaper, though peeling a little, looks semi-recently hung. It is not the original 70s decor.

Recessed spotlights were quite the 70s/80s thing as I recall!

My parents still have wallpaper in their house that was there in my childhood from the early 80s (or earlier, as I have no memory of them decorating) which is in significantly better nick than this which is visibly peeling and bubbling. The colour scheme of yellow and green I can't imagine would have been a choice made more recently than mid-80s, it's VERY of a time.

EleanorReally · 05/01/2026 13:10

i had a loft hatch in my room in the 1970s, it wasnt converted but i used to sit up there, perch on the edge

Balloonhearts · 05/01/2026 13:45

Did they say anything about the boarded up side?

Blondeshavemorefun · 05/01/2026 14:56

I’m still puzzled how the son got up there ?

they cut a hole in his ceiling?

Yes it sounds like they just cut a second loft hatch.

Honestly that would have been the coolest thing as a kid, having a secret room that could only be accessed from the top of my bunk bed!

So where was the hole in the loft?

the green squiggle and they they repainted ceiling in bedroom

I always thought there was probably a previous entrance to the loft just outside that green-framed cut out, as that looked like that was designed to be the main entrance to the “secret room”.

My guess is originally there was a full partition at the end so the green door was the only route in. Then at some point they (later owners?) boarded up the second hatch and locked down the partition with the rest of the loft so it could be used as part of the main loft storage.

But not that sort of light bulb. Someone has also boarded up the hole (presumably) since the 70s or OP would be aware of it.

I don't know about the pattern, but the complete cleanliness of the hanging strip and given the sloppy application it would not have remained intact and clean on the peeled away part (up top by the hallogen globes!) for 55 years.

I don’t think you can work out much about the lights from the photos.

But if we accept that the space was originally constructed as a children’s den with a separate loft hatch (which makes perfect sense!), it’s hardly much of a leap to think that someone later improved that space, before eventually deciding to abandon it (eg after teenage children had grown up) and close off the hatch when redecorating.

Certainly a lot less of a leap than many of the theories proposed on this thread!

We need to speak to the actual owners

Exactly. Despite having only bought the place recently and having just "moved in in November" could not possible speak to the former owners, or anyone else involved in the sale... Instead it's all Interpol and OP bleating weakly:

If the people we bought the house from are on here please DM me.

Jane143 · 08/01/2026 07:55

I think OP needs to arrange a viewing for us all to have a proper look!🤣

Like, why would they need to? It's not a serious matter pertaining to the purchase, it's just mildly curious. The level they've taken it to "oh you know someone who knew the old owners...what's the deal with the room in the loft?" is about right and they've received a perfectly satisfactory answer.

If I already had direct contact with the owners I'd no doubt have dropped them a message just to satisfy my curiosity but I wouldn't go tracking them down as if this were need-to-know information.
