I've seen these threads before and thought how on earth did you not know! How big must your house be to have a secret room.
Our house is not massive, 4 bed, normal size not really old or anything.
But there's a super creepy room. Hidden at the back of the loft, It's got carpet, wall paper and even spot lights! And a director's chair... just sitting in the middle of it! It's weird.

ah apologies cross posted

CoolPlayer · 09/12/2025 17:30

I do feel like if it was something they didn’t want you to suspect they could have ripped the wall paper off the walls and moved the chair pretty easy before they left, maybe they had clothes stored or something. I actually find being in a garage sorting stuff quite peaceful so maybe this was a little like that 😅I remember going up a loft in a rented house and the last tenant had left a suit hanging up in there, i nearly fell off the ladder

Doggielovelouie · 09/12/2025 17:25

I got confused because she said she entered through small hatch at the beginning

The hatch is to enter the attic. The nook is just at the end of it

Doggielovelouie · 09/12/2025 17:05

I've read all her posts. They are clear that the front isn't boarded and just has a half wall. It is confusing that she is calling it a room but when you read from the beginning you see it's just a nook open to the attic.

Oftenaddled · 09/12/2025 18:04

Doggielovelouie · 09/12/2025 17:16

I stand corrected - she mentioned a hatch to get to it

confused

Sorry, missed your reply! No worries.

Sorry, missed your reply! No worries.

Because it said secret room I thought it was concealed

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/12/2025 18:13

It is strange no door so guessing nothing too untoward happened there

disgustingtoe · 09/12/2025 18:21

Dontlletmedownbruce · 06/12/2025 23:37

Cheap porno recordings is my guess.

my first thought !

Doggielovelouie · 09/12/2025 18:26

Now I know it wasn’t concealed I would think it’s much more innocent

or everyone in the house was in on it!

Nanof8 · 09/12/2025 18:38

That would turn into my reading room.

You don’t have teens do you? @Oftenaddled

because the best teen hangouts at home involves the bare minimum of effort. So hauling down the ladder, and climbing up to a pokey hole to get up there…. Nah, can’t be arsed as well as not close to the kitchen.

best thing I ever did to tempt my teens to hang at home with friends was a have a large garden room built with super fast WiFi, a fridge, heating and sound proof!

I agree with this! I changed my mind after seeing the assault course to get to it!

They should have made it into this cosy attic room

That is gorgeous. I really admire the mother's diy skills.

So pretty. It’s basically a crap 80s version of that.

...and say what exactly?

AnEnglishCircedee · 09/12/2025 22:03

Complete the online form about unusual activities. Might be nothing or it Might be helpful to the many many unsolved cases they have .

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 09/12/2025 22:52

Maybe someone started making a playroom
or a den or something but we’re just crap at DIY and never finished it

Moonstone20 · 10/12/2025 07:57

I think it’s a home office / hobby room. I don’t think it was ever fully enclosed. The little green ‘door’ was probably used for related storage as the other side of it is has boarded flooring. I do want to know though what is in the boarded up area at the opposite end.

Moonstone20 · 10/12/2025 08:01

Just to add it looks odd as it’s all in isolation. When I moved into my house the attic had a single stool, a stack of random books including those about witchcraft and serial killers, and a wall that had been plastered in Spanish style plastering. If I hadn’t met the previous owners it would have seemed a bit creepy, but as it was I knew he was a late middle-aged DIY freak who had practised his plastering up there and his wife was a bit woo so the books were probably hers and had just been left there as they couldn’t be bothered / forgot to clear a bunch of heavy hardbacks out.

Caerulea · 10/12/2025 11:34

I love this thread!

I don't understand the open front & building a whole mini door at the back with a frame & everything - you've a whole loft space, why on earth would you set it up like that? Why put it in skirting boards? Why paint it with obvious abandon? Why is the light switch at the back & not at the front where the access is easiest? Even if this is some weird, but innocent, sex/escape/quiet 'room' none of those things make sense.

As for a whole portion of the loft being closed off with no access at all is extra peculiar! Like... You make a mini door in that backrooms space but not an access door to the walled off area?

A) who doesn't have a loft crammed to the point of bursting with absolute shit - I'd need all the space available lol

B) access for maintenance? Wiring, storm damage, leaks? The list is endless as to why access to the whole loft is a good idea

C) why didn't the survey mention the blocking off of the loft?

It's just so much effort on things that make very little sense. For sure, though, it would have been about 5 minutes before I'd made a hole in that back wall to see what was behind it. A bread knife would be enough...

Strawberriesandpears · 10/12/2025 12:13

Wildcard suggestion! Maybe the previous owners were trying to come up with an idea for a new children's TV show and it was like a test 'set'. A bit like that cottage where Tots TV was filmed.

More realistically though, I do think it is maybe just a hangout that a teen in the 90s / early 2000s had been given free rein to decorate. Hence the messy wallpaper etc and strange choice of green paint.

However, having said that, it will be interesting to see what is in the other concealed part of the loft (it was part C on the diagram the other day) if the OP chooses to share that with us.

Ohwhatswrong · 10/12/2025 14:48

I'm so sorry there are so many comments but I didn't want you to think I'd left!
I'm not even bothered by the bordered up loft to be honest. But I feel like some people are so invested it would be rude of me to find out and let you know what's behind there 😂.
I'm to scared to go up there on my own. I have a new born during the day and two other children with hectic schedules so I'm not sure when I'm going to be able to go back up there.
I spoke to my DF today and he said he will come over in a couple of weeks (years in Mumsnet time, sorry).
And have a look for me

Did you find out why the funeral directors called?

Doggielovelouie · 10/12/2025 14:57

Op I do t think it’s nearly as sinister as we have been speculating given it actually wasn’t concealed

you just didn’t see it

I do think it’s been used for some kind of recording - camera moved, chair been left

Why can’t you /dh go up in the evening or at the weekend

LotzofLurve · 10/12/2025 15:04

It's a storm in a teacup.

Or a chair in the loft.

I actually thought this was a tongue in cheek thread.

I can't believe you are really worried OP.

It's a half-baked loft conversion where the previous owner made a den, for themselves, with a chair, a bit of wallpaper and a carpet.

It's not weird, scary or anything sinister.

It's the equivalent of a man-shed, or a woman-shed to get a bit of peace and quiet.

Anything else you imagine it is, is really your imagination.
