I've seen these threads before and thought how on earth did you not know! How big must your house be to have a secret room.
Our house is not massive, 4 bed, normal size not really old or anything.
But there's a super creepy room. Hidden at the back of the loft, It's got carpet, wall paper and even spot lights! And a director's chair... just sitting in the middle of it! It's weird.

I literally just finished reading a book where a family moves into a new house, and the husband finds a secret room. There's an old armchair, a Welsh dresser, etc. in the room. And a bunch of momentos (glasses, wallet, watch, dog collar, etc) inside the dresser, kept by a serial killer, from the victims, who now wants the stuff back!

I read this too a few months ago. The Dream Home. T.M Logan Great Author
Good book

SqueakyDoor · 10/12/2025 20:49

Maybe the space housed a recovering addict, like Dot Cotton did for Nasty Nick in Eastenders?

Or what about a cult-member being snatched from the cult and stashed up there for deprogramming?

UnctuousUnicorns · 10/12/2025 22:22

I suspect this thread was actually started by TM Logan to boost sales. 😉

Just wanted to chip in re. police reporting as a someone who used to work in police intelligence.

A lot of posters are missing the point - it's not up to the OP or mumsnet crowd to decide whether something is relevant to the police and whether it is creepy/suspicious. You don't need to have an opinion or try to solve the mystery.

You have come across something out of the ordinary that has raised a few questions. Now all you need to do is pass on the information and with it responsibility for deciding whether it is relevant. Please report it to your local police non-emergency line/website, interpol and it would also be useful to do an online form report to the NCA.

Open the other side of the loft with caution or get someone to help you!

Well said!

I spoke to my DF today and he said he will come over in a couple of weeks (years in Mumsnet time, sorry).
And have a look for me

Your DH also got an overactive imagination?

Spiltcof · 11/12/2025 06:35

that’s your benchmark for contacting the police?

ThestoriesIcouldtellyou · 11/12/2025 23:03

I agree it's weird. I also agree the little green door is clearly there because it was previously boarded up completely, and that this used to be a secret room. That's the only explanation for the little door, otherwise you access the eves from the unboarded part of the room.
The wallpaper is childlike but the room isn't. It's freaking me out and I'd also report it to be on the safe side.

flatfootedfred · 12/12/2025 14:12

It definitely looks unsettling, and think largely because of the combination of the slightly child-like decoration and the position of the more adult chair in a dominant position. If you took away the chair or moved it then I don’t think it would seem nearly as unsettling.

And being realistic - what possible scenario is there in which a person with nefarious intentions is luring someone to climb up a ladder into a roof space, crawl across an unboarded section of the loft to get to a secret room in order to get up to whatever it is? Why would you not use one of the numerous other actual rooms in the house?

I honestly think it is more likely that Bad Stuff has happened in any given ordinary room in any given ordinary house than up in this loft.

Police intelligence are going to be more capable of making this call than unqualified/without relevant experience MNers.

It would be easy to carry a drugged person into the room (sorry to sound bleak, but there it is).

Up a ladder, into a loft hatch, across an unboarded loft floor rounding a couple corners? Uh, no that sounds less than straightforward.

user568795 · 12/12/2025 16:27

When we bought our house it was almost derelict after being owned by an extremely unscrupulous landlord who ran it as an HMO, taking council funds for housing tenants in disgusting conditions. There were actually a couple rooms like that (not hidden, but very similar) which were used as bedrooms. When we renovated we knocked them through to make bigger rooms, and went up into one on the top floor to make a vaulted ceiling in the room below.

Is it possible your house was ever used that way?

It's not an appealing room, but I'm not seeing anything hugely nefarious here. I think the mumsnet collective imagination has gone into overdrive

Interpol?! The NCA? I can see the police non emergency line.

Given the vast amounts of money made from filming things and posting on dark net, I would say straightforward in terms of effort and even more so if at the time they had things like temporary boards to make the journey easier. We all hope it isn't this, obviously, but definitely worth getting it checked.

Interpol etc would have databases of backgrounds from footage posted on dark web so it would be a straightforward check. They would also have the expertise and experience to pick up on relevant things in a way you and I wouldn't.

I’m not disputing that - horrible as it is to think of - people do sedate children for the purposes of producing illegal films.

What I am questioning is the plausibility that a person with a drugged child would choose to pull that child into a very hard to access loft room to commit illegal acts. What purpose would be served by this when they could do the same thing in any room in the house, avoiding significant difficulty and risk?
