I've seen these threads before and thought how on earth did you not know! How big must your house be to have a secret room.
Our house is not massive, 4 bed, normal size not really old or anything.
But there's a super creepy room. Hidden at the back of the loft, It's got carpet, wall paper and even spot lights! And a director's chair... just sitting in the middle of it! It's weird.

I guess that's a relief!

Ohwhatswrong · 04/01/2026 19:45

My DS is obsessed is obsessed with ventriloquist dummys. Slappy from goosebumps to be precise.
He got one for Christmas (not slappy). I can't look at it!

What about the other area behind the bricked up wall ?

Ohwhatswrong · 04/01/2026 19:52

Oh I forgot,
@bigboykitty the voicemail from the funeral home. When my DH called back it was to see a Joanna in the chapel of rest!
I'm not even kidding!
But I saw someone last year and they told me I have a "J" watching and with me always. But I'm taking that in a kind way not a negative way 😊

We haven't looked yet, but I'm not in a rush to look, especially now the room has a reason 🤣

Those are the worst as they start talking on their own.

Soon it will be ordering your son around, saying: “Slappy just wants some fun”. 🤡

CrayonCritic5 · 04/01/2026 19:58

We need to know about the room on the other side 😬

AprilinPortugal · 04/01/2026 19:58

i think that's so exciting! 😄 we've got a room in our old Edwardian house where the flooring is different in part of it...I want to investigate...I'm convinced there's a secret basement or something underneath! 😄

Ha, so where’s the hole now?

I assume it was next to the green-framed doorway into the ‘secret space” and since covered up (which is what I suggested was the most likely scenario about 500 posts ago, if I remember correctly).

Met some of the neighbours over Christmas.
Turns out my DH knows our neighbours daughter, and her DF new the original owners from the 70s.
DH messaged the daughter and she came back with...
They made the room for their son, they made a hole in his bedroom ceiling above his bunk bed 🤨
So sorry everyone, not as creepy or news worthy after all 🤣

That’s a good idea in theory. I take it there’s no sign of the hole now?

I want to see this! Please take a picture of it sat on the chair in the secret room 😂

They made a hole in his ceiling ?

what so he climbed to top of his bunk bed and then climbed into the loft @Ohwhatswrong

But the wallpaper and particularly the lighting is not from the 70s, so it doesn't really answer your question of what that room was set up and used for.

Alicehatter · 04/01/2026 23:40

Following for the update on the boarded side! Think I'd have burnt the house down if I found this, wouldn't have been half as bad if that chair wasn't there!

Glamba · 05/01/2026 02:53

Thanks for updating @Ohwhatswrong . I think this raises more questions for me than the original mystery. Presumably the boarded off bit would be the room extension so still why the yellow bit, and why when they closed off the ceiling would they not just take a panel off the extension to reclaim all their loft space back?

I'm actually quite intrigued by your lack of interest in the boarded off bit. I think we d have whacked a hole in a board weeks ago, if only to check there is nothing amiss in there.

dogsarebetterthanppl · 05/01/2026 03:01

i would cleanse with sage or palo santo but thats my beliefs, if you follow an organised religion perhaps get a blessing in the room, if you do that and redecorate it you might like it more and start to use it. this was always a dream of mine, i would do what i've just said then add a nice recliner chair, table, soft furnishings, mood lighting etc and use it as a little sitting room, i'm slightly jealous lol.

Tamtim · 05/01/2026 03:56

How creepy and wonderful at the same time. I’d be temped to rip off the wall paper and check every nook and cranny for secret cameras. Don’t tell the kids and you can redecorate and turn it into your secret hiding place when hubby and kids are getting on your nerves. 😄

Scenicgirl · 05/01/2026 04:39

This has been posted before.
Definately well before November, but with the same story.

BeNimbleUmberGoose · 05/01/2026 06:57

It looks innocuous. A kid's reading space made by parents' DIY is quite an obvious result. The wallpaper made me think it was a similar space made for a harried housewife to find some peace in.

EleanorReally · 05/01/2026 07:11

oh i know someone who did that but not in the 1970's,
odd choice of wall paper though

Futurept · 05/01/2026 07:36

Only just found this thread and read all OPs updates. The explanation does sound plausible, because it triggered a memory my cousin had a little loft room make like this for him above his bedroom! He would have been about 10 when they moved out, so small enough to fit. I remember playing on our game boys up there. It was a bit of a thing when they sold the house because it didn't have building regs (or something like that, maybe I'm using the wrong term), so they had to replaster the ceiling before selling.

I've only read the OP's comments so sorry if I'm repeating what others have said.
I had a room in our attic pretty much identical to this one in shape and size as a playroom. My father boarded over part of the loft floor and I had plywood (possibly) walls painted white. Can't remember the lighting but it could have been spotlights. It was reached by a loft ladder.
I kept loads of books and my Jacqui comics up there as well as some Barbies, games and stuff.
So, it looks normal to me. I had a beanbag, not a chair though.
It's not the same place (I lived in a three bedroom bungalow) but the initial J is very significant to me, so perhaps the psychic PP was picking up on my room too 😆

Edited

So, just like the room I used to have.
Maybe it was quite a common thing in the 1970s?

Eta Thanks for the update, @Ohwhatswrong

seafoamhair · 05/01/2026 09:04

The room may have been built in the 70s, but it was not decorated as per the OP's photo in the 70s. The lighting fixtures are not 70s. They look like halogen downlights, hard to say - but not 70s. The wallpaper was not hung in the 70s. There is no way that paper would be so pristine and not caked in dirt and grime on the folding away portion up by the ceiling.

It was clearly fitted out, for whatever purpose, far more recently than the 70s.

But as the OP cannot possibly enquire from the seller or the estate agent or the lawyers involved in the sale about it, we will never know.
