There was no need to demand anything. The Israelis were already putting forward a contestant, just as they’ve always done for Eurovision. On the contrary, it’s others that are demanding they’re thrown out.

Israel has not always put forward a contestant, because they have not always competed in Eurovision. The other countries in question weren't (all) necessarily demanding that Israel be arbitrarily kicked out, they were asking for a vote on it. And the EBU did agree to hold a vote, but reneged on that. I realise that a song contest is not exactly the world's most pressing issue right now, but facts are important.

For pity's sake, one of the primary stated priorities of the EBU is to promote and protect free public service media. Russia no longer has free public service media, it has been taken over by the government. Hence Russia is banned from the competition because it no longer supports the EBU's priorities. Israeli still has free public service media but it is under increasing attack by Netanyahu, which is why the EBU and those members who aren't grandstanding are anxious to continue to support it. Allowing Israel to continue to participate isn't supporting the country or its government - it is supporting public service broadcast media - something we should all be interested in preserving.

100% agree @SheThinksShesAllThat You won't get many on MN agreeing though. 🙄 Pulling out of the Eurovision Song Contest next year (because Israel is going to take part in it) is childish and pathetic. I will be embarrassed to show my face in mainland Europe again if the UK pulls out!

I know it’s not going to go down well on MN. But it’s a song contest it should be a way of people to forget the S**t going on in the world. We really live in a sad state right now.

Exactly, let’s also not forget that the international media have been and indeed still are completely banned from Gaza by Israel, despite the ceasefire, with no real
justification. Even Russia has various correspondents on the ground and the media are allowed to report the invasion of Ukraine. Even Israel’s own Supreme Court have challenged this.

Whereas in Gaza the world has had to rely on very inexperienced and threatened local Palestinian journalists for any kind of accurate reporting, many of whom have seen their family and friends killed and horrifically injured or die of starvation or dehydration and faced similar threats themselves. Gaza has been one of the most deadly conflicts for journalists in history.

So why should Israel get to participate in a contest which stands for exactly what it appears to ban?

Someone talking about this on the radio earlier related it to the boycott of apartheid South Africa and made the very good point that it helps send a message to a population about how they are viewed by the rest of the world, which eventually is part of what stops governments doing the wrong thing.

You’re right! I haven’t because I don’t spend my spare time looking at politics because the news is full of it. If I need to do my research I will but if you read the OP you’ll note my concerns are regarding why can’t we just stop being silly over a song contest and stop replacing it with politics instead its crazy. I’m my opinion ( which is like an arse hole- everyones got one)

Do you actually know what has happened with Eurovision in the last couple of years?

Israel being in the contest has totally over shadowed the actual music. It's created a bloody terrible atmosphere and it's generally just awful

I have no time for hamas or the Israeli government.

I don't blame the Netherlands in particular for pulling out given how badly things have been handled in the last two years by the organisers.

Israel is a pariah state, for well documented reasons. It's far more than the Gaza atrocities, the decades long West Bank ethnic cleansing is seldom mentioned.

Having said that, I'd disagree with the banning them. Especially when so many fundamentalist and terrorist states are allowed in sporting competitions.
