Why does Taylor Swift fall out with everyone?

I've never known anyone so famous for ditching people and then writing songs about them. Why is she so popular? She seems utterly toxic to me.

Personally I was floored by your balanced and intellectual critique of her "boring" hair, but hey, people of all ages are welcome on Mumsnet.

So what if she finds her hair boring! Everyone is allowed an opinion. Christ alive, it's just hair, the Swifties cannot bear dissension.

PortSalutSherryHello · 17/10/2025 14:47

'her hair is boring' is just a bit childish and mean though isn't it. Dressed up as intellectual critique

localbutterfly · 17/10/2025 14:47

I don't think people fully appreciate how much unrelenting public scrutiny someone like Swift is under, and the impact that has over time. She essentially has no private life, and everything she does or doesn't say or do is picked over endlessly by complete strangers who think they know her intimately but judge by their own limited experience and purely subjective standards and really have zero clue.

Her being seen in public with reported "MAGA supporters" isn't exactly comparable to some rando failing to sufficiently denounce her bestie for not breaking up with her boyfriend after he drunkenly admitted to voting third party, or refusing to ghost her conspiracy theorist granddad for tweeting that Trump was robbed of the Nobel Peace Prize. A better comparison might be deciding whether to not to stop talking to your boss, your colleagues, and your clients when you begin to suspect they might be ideologically impure - and then similarly avoiding any and all recruiters, interviewers, referees, former colleagues, and potential employers (after being fired from that job) in case THEY might "be MAGA".

That said, I'm not particularly a fan. But I am grateful to her for almost single-handedly bringing back the skort.

It’s not that it’s dissention, it’s that it is an utterly hollow criticism of the kind that only ever seem to be directed at her. Alanis Morrissette has had the same hair for thirty years, I’ve never seen anyone say her hair was boring. Nobody says Beyonce’s outfits are “a tired overdone middle of the road mainstream borefest”. Nobody has a go at Adele for almost exclusively singing about her love life.

I’m not a Taylor swift follower or supporter but I’d say it’s factually incorrect to say she falls out with everyone. If that was true she would never have reached the level of success she has. You’re naive if you think the only people involved in celebrity success are other celebrities. In reality she has to be able to get along with press, managers, brands, solicitors, admin staff, hairdressers etc to enable her success.

Secondly, some of the people she “fell out” with aren’t even faultless themselves. Kanye west is clearly severely mentally unstable and has had insane outbursts against a number of people and brands, including his own family. I’d say his issue with Taylor was more about him being in a crazed headspace as opposed to her being unable to get along with anyone. Kim Kardashian is a media master, every decision she makes is calculated and her issues with Taylor was for PR.

Lots of people avoid Reform voters and people with views to the right of Conservative. MAGA is repugnant. You see it as superior if you wish. I think people who have compassion for those less fortunate are superior.

So you do think those who have compassion for the families of those murdered by “illegal” immigrants (and their supportors) who therefore want to radically curb uncontrolled migration into the country are superior? And you think those who fight tirelessly for the plight of unborn babies who they perceive as being murdered without anyway to defend themselves are also superior?

It’s nice that you put Reform and Trump supporters on such a high platform that you think they’re better than other people, but actually they’re still complex, multi faceted individuals that are doing what they think is best for themselves and those less fortunate, in the same way lefties are so I encourage you to think of lefties, labour voters and Democrats as superior too.

You should try having some compassion for those who perceive the world differently to you and assume they too are doing the best they can in this messy, complicated world - even if you think their views are misguided. I think the people who can do that are the ones who are superior.

I'm not a Swiftie. I just find it a bit rich when someone peppers their post with personal comments and then claims she came looking for a balanced debate. There is nothing balanced about trashing someone's appearance.

But Adele and Alanis as far as I know don’t do 16 costume changes per show. Maybe a couple in the case of Adele and zero for Alanis? Anyway, Swift’s image is an essential part of her brand/appeal in the way the aforementioned is not. So in that way it is arguably not that unreasonable to critique her fashion choices. I mean saying eg “she’s so ugly” would be out of line IMO, but saying oh this particular outfit/look isn’t surely.

PortSalutSherryHello · 17/10/2025 15:25

All popstars have a look tho. Alanis morisettes outfits are a choice in the same way Taylor's are
I'm just a bit incredulous at adult women writing on Internet forums about how boring a popstar is.

beguilingeyes · 17/10/2025 15:33

She loudly and publicly endorsed Kamala Harris and she's supposed to be MAGA now?! Words fail me. Remember Vance and the whole 'childless cat lady' thing?
Her hair?!! Christ on a bike, are you twelve?

That’s a fair point. I suppose to a certain extent she has to make relatively safe outfit choices a) because she has to dance in them, change in and out of them quickly, needs to be able to put a guitar strap over them or sit comfortably on a piano stool. But equally if she wore anything more out there or risqué she would be accused of being too sexual. She can’t win either way. And also, how the fuck is someone’s hair boring? Like, what does one have to do to have not boring hair? It’s hair… there’s only so much you can do with it. It’s not like she could have a mohawk or put it in dreadlocks.

How can hair be boring though?

Her hair has been long, short, curly, straight and a range of different shades...she's even worn wigs for music videos so I'm not sure what counts as "exciting" hair?

Mine has been brown and apart from a short lived chin length bob in my early 20s has gone from shoulder length to waist length and occasionally gets a bottle of box dye in shades ranging from orangey brown to burgundy brown if I'm feeling daring. Mine must be REALLY boring.

😆The Taylor haters find new and inventive ways to insult her every day. Some insults are better than others. She has boring hair is extremely funny I have to say. 😂

They'll be saying her eyes are too blue next, and she's too tall! 😬

Haters Gonna Hate. 😎

So what if she does 16 costume changes per show? Confused Pretty sure Madonna used to do a few!! AND Mariah Carey, AND Katy Perry. Also Celine Dion was known to have 2 dozen different outfits during a show. Beyonce had 145 different costumes for her Cowboy Carter tour. Don't see any shade being thrown on any of these performers way though!

And calling Taylor ugly would be farcical, because she is clearly very pretty!

iloveeverykindofcat · 17/10/2025 16:45

I will never understand the extremes of feeling around Taylor Swift.
People either act she's a talentless hack or the second coming of Jimi Hendrix.
Neither of these things are remotely true. She writes catchy - if not particularly innovative - melodic pop and she does it well. Its not my kind of music, but I wouldn't turn if off the radio. She's had a ton of advantages, but also seems like a hard worker and is pretty unobjectionable (as billionaires go). I'm quite sure 99% of what the media write about her is bullshit.

petermaddog · 17/10/2025 22:33

shes 35 not really young

PortSalutSherryHello · 17/10/2025 23:06

I don't think she's the second coming of jimi Hendrix and I'm not sure anyone has said that but she does connect with her audience in a way that is very rare. O disagree that she must writes catchy tunes. She's captured a zeitgeist. Some of her .ore heartfelt songs are unbelievably raw. She's a pretty unique talent because she can write these songs and play her own instruments and can own a crowd and can do the social media thing and is philanthropic and connects with her audience. That's a hell of a combination.

As someone blessed/cursed (depending on the day) with curly hair I've never been able to describe it as 'boring' - wild, messy, fabulous, infuriating, time consuming yes...... I do find it funny that even someone with as much money and as much in control as TS cant stop their hair from returning to factory setting in high humidity and rain shows, and she huffs and puffs at it and flings it out of the way like we all do and just gets on with the show

Knavesmirelass · 18/10/2025 15:11

Honestly, whether you like or dislike her music or her as a person how can anyone be negative when she does things like this for a little girl battling cancer? It isn't a one off either, she donates consistently and for many causes. Yes she can afford it but it doesn't mean she has to.
