Fucking flags

xmaspud3 · 09/09/2025 15:01

I know this has probably been done to death on here and there will be lots of threads about it already but I cant be bothered to trawl through the site for them so here I am.

I’m so irritated by the England flags popping up everywhere. There has been an influx put up in my area over the last week, it seems to be increasing by the day. I don’t hate the flag, but I hate the fact it is being used to send a clear message by racists. People aren’t doing it to be patriotic they are doing it to be hateful towards those that they don’t feel ‘belong’ in their country.

I don’t want to see all of these flags in my area. If people are entitled to put them up then why am I not entitled to go and cut the fuckers down? And don’t get me started on the spray painting of public roundabouts and road signage by people who allegedly love their country so much that they are vandalising it at the expense of public money.

If I see one more person give a ‘big well done to whoever has erected the flags on xyz street’ on Facebook I will explode. Does anyone else feel ragey over it?

Zilch chance.

I mean, do you both NEED someone to tell you the difference in sentiment between the two? Really?

Catpiece · 09/09/2025 15:32

Can’t handle what? Let’s see how well you handle the civil war that’s being stoked.

What will be will be if we worried about every little thing we wouldn't leave the house. Just do what makes you happy and don't worry about others. If you don't like countries flying their own flags don't do it yourself

You can be concerned about both, they aren’t mutually exclusive.

And let’s not be silly, it’s not the flying bits of material we need to worry about. It’s the intent of those that are putting them up so obnoxiously.

What intent?

What wider context? Do you think you can answer before I run and grab my much used bingo card?

The ‘bingo card’ thing is just a way to dismiss opposing arguments without engaging with them.

It’s lazy and disingenuous.

BatchCookBabe · 09/09/2025 15:31

Do you have a problem with the Palestine flags @xmaspud3

No, I thought not. Wink

This is what I would like to know.
How would the OP feel if, instead of British/English flags being flown, they were all the flag of Palestine? My thinking would be that it’s not a problem.

Which was also the thinking of Birmingham Council. Apparently, the English/British flag is a health and safety hazard and needs removing but the Palestine flag isn’t.

That is my understanding of why this movement started.

I saw someone on Facebook had painted the 4 corners on pink and yellow to look like Battenberg cakes! And quite right, too.

😂

Flags is it? These are in Pontllanfraith and they look very jolly.

Love that

I actually like that vast array of flags from different countries @JaneJeffer

I am not offended by peoples flags you see, (unlike some!) Oh hang on, it's not 'flags' is it, it's FLAG - the England one. Some people just hate THAT one. And it's almost exclusively ENGLISH people who hate it. Go figure! Wink

Yes because calling someone a racist or a knuckle dragger is an ‘opposing opinion’ Hmm

TATT2 · 09/09/2025 15:37

I like to see the flags but it's a tad overdone at present. It's time we felt able to fly our flag with pride, like other countries. However, spray painting public property and flags hanging everywhere you look, is, I agree, largely the work of racists and thugs, with ill intent, rather than pride in our country.

JPT96 · 09/09/2025 15:38

I’m not British but I think people should be allowed to display their own national flag without being called racist.

MakeMineADietCoke · 09/09/2025 15:38

I voted YABU because we really didn’t need yet another thread on this because you “couldn’t be bothered” to add your mainstream opinion to previous threads. At least have some sort of original viewpoint if you’re making a new thread about it

Saltires being used to express the same sentiment where I am. Utterly depressing.

OP, YANBU and I feel the same.

But tbh I think in getting angry about it, we are playing into the hands of those that are putting them up.

Saltires being used to express the same sentiment where I am.

The only place I've seen that so far is on Twitter (where anything goes, really). And specifically in relation to the Dundee story Of Which We May Not Speak but looks set to be a bit more nuanced than was originally reported.

ThatCyanCat · 09/09/2025 15:38

If I could see them without the context, I'd quite like them. They would be uplifting.

The vandalised roundabouts and local landmarks are worse, and not just because they're harder to undo.

Wynter25 · 09/09/2025 15:20

Always seen the flag outside people's windows 🤷‍♀️ nothing wrong tied on the lamp post either.

Not what I asked.

Wynter25 · 09/09/2025 15:07

Proud to be born in England. Makes me happy seeing them :) why shouldn't they be every here. Other countries have them up 🤷‍♀️

I feel exactly the same. I hope they put more up to brighten up the country.

Yep, funny isn't it, how the England flag bashers are fine with ANY other flag being flown?! Wink

The flags are wonderful. We need to take pride in our country just as other countries do.

I now live in Wales and the Welsh have always displayed their flag with pride, it’s about time the English expressed their patriotism and I love it .

Agree!

CoffeeCupOnBreak · 09/09/2025 15:39

luckylavender · 09/09/2025 15:20

@Wynter25- other nations don’t have a history of them being linked with nefarious individuals in the same way. The National Front, football thugs, fascists, racists etc etc

That's not exactly correct. Nationalists marching and hooligans hooliganing are using their national flags or slight variations of that eg added coat of arms (and football ones in the latter case). As nationalists, that would be a logical choices for flag one wants to wave. I remember neo-nazis makimg trouble when I was young (not uk). They waved our flag and coat of arms. I equally remember EDL demo I passed with English flags when I moved to UK.
It's same old, same old, everywhere really ime.

Thanks for the advice but I’ve already decided don’t I want people to assume I’m an ignorant meat-head who thinks stirring up racial tensions is a good idea.

KhakiTiger · 09/09/2025 15:39

Are you inside people’s heads. How do you know that they are racist? Or are you projecting your own prejudices and narrow mindedness onto others.

EmmaOvary · 09/09/2025 15:39

What are you proud of exactly? Pride implies that you've had some sort of contribution to the thing that you are proud of. Passing an exam, your kids doing well for themselves and so on. Why is being born in a particular country something you can be proud of?

I'm in Scotland. Think I'm safe.

If I were to see a St George's Cross flying here, I'd think some poor bastard had a death wish but didn't have the funds to shout a flight to Dignitas.

The Scotland flag is flying around our city ( same reason as English flags in England) , council staff in the next council over have been threatened when they are trying to remove them. It’s flying from the lamppost outside neighbours 3 doors up, at least I know who to avoid now.
