House viewings - neighbour refuses to take down flag - Update

Hi all, as a follow up to the previously full thread.

DH spoke to our neighbour again this morning and explained the feedback we received from the first viewings yesterday and that the couple who liked it were put off bidding by the flag.

Our neighbour seemed to understand and said he’d be taking the flag down anyway as the weather is turning.

However, I’ve got home from work to find the flag is still up and he’s also erected a ‘Vote Reform’ banner with Nigel Farage doing a thumbs up pose. So he is clearly taking the piss at this point.

Our estate agent even said to us about having a word so I’ve no idea where we go from here.

I would be tempted to advise them that if you cant sell you have been told about a scheme to sell to the council to use for short term housing of x,y,z -

I wouldn’t actually do this but the thought of their faces when they worry about the people they protest against moving next door would bring me some satisfaction - sounds like an awful situation op!

FrivolousKitchenRollUse · 27/08/2025 16:40

Well troll hunting aside, I would imagine he's just made your house more desirable for certain people then?

MaloryJones · 27/08/2025 16:42

😂 🙄

I fucking would do it, and let him know...

ilovesooty · 27/08/2025 16:48

There won't be an opportunity for him to vote for Farage for a long time.

Brilliant - just sent this to DH!

The idea of dropping into conversation that you won't be able to find anyone who wants to buy it to live in it, so you're going to have to sell it to a landlord/developer to rent it out room by room is genius!

TheaBrandt1 · 27/08/2025 16:53

Inspired! Yes pop round and explain nice as pie that if you can’t sell you will turn it into a council run HMO. Those signs will be gone before you close your own front door.

Rallentanda · 27/08/2025 16:54

Get creative. Post a link to the listing in as many right wing loony Facebook groups as you can bear to search for 😂

This! “The council are running a scheme to rent houses for asylum seekers. Since ours is a 3 bed and they count the lounge as an additional bedroom, that means we can have 8 asylum seekers—we’ll be quids in!”

Hibernatingtilspring · 27/08/2025 16:57

I do hope that you and DH can keep up the idea for a good while too.
'oh it's going to be so much easier not being part of a chain'
'yes they're really keen for housing apparently so we're looking forward to getting a quick sale'
'would never have thought of selling to a company instead of a family but after the agent told us it wouldn't sell and the more we've looked into it it's going to be so straightforward'

CallMeMessy · 27/08/2025 16:58

Yup, Council might have it tell him, and there’s still plenty of refugee families looking for a bigger house… we have a Ukrainian family ( mum and her sister) with 5 kids in a 3 bed on our street bless them, crammed in, council let … lovely people, but I’m not sure your neighbour would feel the same if they got housed next to him…

In fact, you can just rent it out a an HMO yourself can’t you. Tell neighbour that you’ll get 2 x the rent you’ll need to pay yourself while everything ‘settles’ down in the housing market…

SerendipityJane · 27/08/2025 17:00

People are allowed to express views you don't agree with.

Which is exactly what the prospective buyers are doing.

I mean, if he wasn’t a racist twat then perhaps he’d be the perfect neighbour.

At this point I would discern the neighbour doesn't give two hoots what you say now and anything else will likely result in further flags being erected, I would accept defeat

The OP has agency.
The neighbour has agency.
The buyers have agency.

Sincerely, get a grip.
Could you please take that flag down while we have viewings is hardly bullying.
I wonder why the neighbour decide that now, of all times, was the time for a fuck off big England flag?
perhaps he’ll be off painting a roundabout with the Danish 🇩🇰 flag soon… who knows.

FishingForest · 27/08/2025 16:47

I fucking would do it, and let him know...

Me too!!!

In fact if there were such a scheme I might do it. Except for the fact that I would feel bad about the people who'd have to live next to him.

GypsyQueeen · 27/08/2025 17:09

I'm sorry but 😅🤣😂😅🤣😂😅🤣😂😅🤣😂

Ahh OP!!! If this is true your neighbour's done you good!!! 👏
