House viewings - neighbour refuses to take down flag - Update

Hi all, as a follow up to the previously full thread.

DH spoke to our neighbour again this morning and explained the feedback we received from the first viewings yesterday and that the couple who liked it were put off bidding by the flag.

Our neighbour seemed to understand and said he’d be taking the flag down anyway as the weather is turning.

However, I’ve got home from work to find the flag is still up and he’s also erected a ‘Vote Reform’ banner with Nigel Farage doing a thumbs up pose. So he is clearly taking the piss at this point.

Our estate agent even said to us about having a word so I’ve no idea where we go from here.

It is racist if you say yes to accepting racism as a fact of life.

I wouldn't want to live next door to a flag shagger it would be an instant no if I was looking to buy - but as a seller it was always going to be a red rag (flag) to a bull to ask for it to come down.

I didn’t post on your other thread, but I was going to advise not talking to your neighbor. Someone who hangs a banner like that is the same type of person who will escalate the situation.

talking to him again or making jokes about future bad neighbors is only going to make him retaliate. Your best approach at this point is to ignore him.

buyers absolutely will consider neighbors while shopping and look elsewhere. Since you now look like you live next door to a crazy person, I would consider delaying the sale until he calms down.

I read your initial post yesterday. I think you were unreasonable to make the request in the first place and you've heightened the situation with continued interaction. Drop it.
Also, I find it difficult to believe a buyer was put off making an offer because of the flag. If someone truly admitted that, they likely weren't serious buyers or extremely high maintenance people.
You said you previously had a cordial relationship with your neighbour. Living beside his house and flag never bothered you before from going about your life, but you've created the problem yourself.
I think you are just anxious about selling and are being over the top with wanting things a certain way. You cannot control anything outside your own property.

Maybe this is the answer... long term all the racists can/will only be able to buy/rent together and the non racists can/will only buy/rent together and then they can all live in their own little olde England bubble where everything is fine and Dandy (haha!) And leave the rest of us to it without having bloody farage shoved down our throats all the time

In no one's right mind does a polite request regarding this flag count as 'bullying and coercive', whereas racist behaviour is by definition bullying and it's very often coercive. I'm sorry you are having this problem. You asked him to remove the flags, and he doubled down. Unfortunately, you can't tell people what to do on their own properties. If you can't sell to a family you'll have to sell ot to an investor. I have an HMO next to me. It's all single men smoking wacky backy all day long. Maybe the secondhand smoke will make your neighbour less of a dick.

I wouldn't be surprised if Farage gets in. Racism and hate are big motivators for a lot of people. Unfortunately, these things tend to have unexpected repercussions. Look at brexit for example the UK will be £311bn worse off by 2035 due to leaving the EU.

@KayleighhMum you can’t go anywhere from here with this neighbour. You were told what would happen and spoke with him again anyway.

Maybe you’ll need to think about selling to a house buying company or a developer now.
