M&S quality so poor now

Mistyglade · 15/08/2025 00:28

Bought some plain multipack knickers that I’ve previously had and my fingers have gone straight through the fabric putting them on.

I don’t think it’s ever happened before even with old cheap ones. What the heck is going on with their quality control? Didn’t it used to be their USP?

This thread surprises me because in recent years, I've had nothing but brilliant quality from M&S. Lovely designs which are comfortable, practical and pretty, and they last forever. I used to pass through just to get to the food hall but I stop now, because their clothes always catch my eye. So many high street retailers don't seem to actually fit women's bodies, but M&S have really stepped up in recent years imo.

Like every other shop, M+S quality has gone downhill big time. The last pack i bought got holes in very quickly and didn't wash well. They are a bit expensive but i recommend Stripe and Stare - proper cotton ( bonus for being sustainable) good gusset knickers. i picked a box up in TK Maxx one day and was very impressed so slowly converting all my underwear when i need new ones

Their clothes often catch my eye too, but not in a good way. And I've been really disappointed with the decline in quality. I bought some lace-top knickers a few years ago and they were brilliant (and still going strong). I bought another lot last year which looked exactly the same but different colours. They only have lace at the front so they don't fit so nicely. (I tried some Sainsburys ones but they were even worse.)

Oh so because I'm not obsessed with anti-trans rhetoric permeating EVERY damn thread, I'm trans?

So the ONLY 2 categories are cis women/anti trans individuals or trans women perverts?

I'd hate to exist in your myopic world.

Please stop throwing around the word 'cis' it is insulting and inappropriate.

This is patently untrue and I can't believe anyone would say this. Their clothing sizes and fit have been rubbish for years and the material is atrocious now. I'm totally their target market and even I just laugh at the clothing if I ever pass through on the way to the now poor food section. In fact, dh even laughed last time when I showed him some items.

There's no such thing as cis women.
The SC ruling stated women.

The Sex and Gender board is where you should be having this discussion.

The OP was talking about the quality of underwear not the models.

M&S knickers are absolutely terrible. They get holes and tears in them within weeks. Such poor quality material and stitching.

Never happened to me and I always wear them.

Slightyamusedandsilly · 15/08/2025 13:58

AmIHumanOrAmIAYeti · 15/08/2025 12:27

Cis is a slur.

Biological women. Biological men. As defined in law.

And I didn’t say anything about trans. I said there were men wanking into women’s knickers in M+S, which is made a lot easier by the fact that there is no women’s only changing in their stores (there is men only changing though). They aren’t necessarily trans, but they are men.

Seems appropriate to point that out on a thread specifically about women’s knickers, no?

Not when the OP was asking about the quality of the underwear.

Take your obsession to the Sex and Gender board.

It’s relevant for a discussion about M+S’ women’s knickers.

Sex and Gender board. Not here.

Amusing that a few people would think I work there just because my opinion differs from yours! No, I don't work there, and to be fair, I don't like EVERYTHING in M&S, the shoes can be a bit hit and miss and I don't like the selection of bags. But I genuinely do like the clothes and they last a lot longer than the other stuff I get on the high street.

Ok 👍
I was only joking anyhow. I thought my emojis made that clear

No harm done! You weren't the only one to ask.

BlueandWhitePorcelain · 15/08/2025 14:14

A few years ago, I bought about 5 v necked t shirts relaxed fit. They were great - never needed ironing! I looked at some of their t shirts this year - almost paper thin! Why would I pay their prices, when I could get better elsewhere?

I bought DD1 a load of t shirts this year from Next - reasonably thick cotton, and seemed much better quality!

I am in M & S’ traditional market; but they seem to be aiming clothes at DD2’s age group, even though she wouldn’t shop there in a million years!

Frankly that doesn't matter. It is a slur, an insult. It is like using a racial slur then telling anyone who complained to go to the black mn board.

I bought 2 pairs of chinos there in the spring (different colours) and then went back for a 3rd pair in another colour - all supposed to be the same size, I buy long length. When I tried the 3rd pair on at home they were much shorter. I compared them against the other 2 pairs and they were 2-3 cm shorter. I assumed they had labelled them incorrectly and took them back to a different branch. I compared them in store to another pair and they were the same shorter length. I asked a member of staff who said maybe a new supplier. Surely if you buy a long length it should be the same measurements whoever the supplier is.

There’s something called tolerance in clothing. As long as items come within tolerance they are passed for sale.

However 2-3 cm is quite big. Also in QC they only measure about 1 in 500.

M and S QC used to go on the shop floor with a tape measure. If measurements weren’t in tolerance the whole line was pulled. And the supplier had to cover the loss.

No one does this anymore unfortunately. Primark don’t even have QC

They sent my teen daughter into what was previously the men’s changing room with bras to try. I asked for the women’s changing area and was told it’s unisex now. When I complained a manager came out and basically tried to label me as the one with the problem.

I’d be interested to know where this happened (if it actually did). The branch I go to has men’s and women’s fitting rooms - no unisex.

Why would you not believe the poster just because your branch is different?
Bit unfair and judgemental.....

Because I don’t believe half of the hysteria I see on here about M&S changing rooms, frankly.

I stopped buying underwear from there around 15(?) years ago, as noticed that the quality had gone downhill.
