M&S quality so poor now

Bought some plain multipack knickers that I’ve previously had and my fingers have gone straight through the fabric putting them on.

I don’t think it’s ever happened before even with old cheap ones. What the heck is going on with their quality control? Didn’t it used to be their USP?

I’d be interested to know where this happened (if it actually did). The branch I go to has men’s and women’s fitting rooms - no unisex.

Are you sure? There was a video last week showing a store with a clearly marked “men’s fitting room” and a “fitting room” which was confirmed to be for any sex (but was next to the women’s underwear dept)

Purplebunnie · 15/08/2025 14:58

Got measured in M&S for bras (yes I know but it's the only place we've got since Debenhams shut down) Only tried on the white but bought flesh and black as well

Tried the black on at home and it is at least an inch shorter across the back - measured it against both the other bras. Both the box and label on the bra gave the size it should have been.

No problem exchanging and I tried on before leaving store. No idea what M&S are going to do as it's too small for the size it says and will be too big for the size down

Frankly that doesn't matter. It is a slur, an insult. It is like using a racial slur then telling anyone who complained to go to the black mn board.

I totally disagree. You may find it personally insulting, but as a cis woman, I'm fine with it.

The discussion of trans women in M&S adverts should not be shoehorned into this discussion. MN developed a space SPECIFICALLY for this purpose. It was argued for at great length. Churlish not to use it.

Can’t go wrong with Sloggi. I’m not one for buying brands or overpaying but they just last forever. Great quality.
Or Amazon wirarpa brand. Or Costco.

I agree; Sloggi are like the old M & S. Perhaps better.
Also Costco.

I've never understood the raving about M&S quality - maybe 20 years ago but everyone used to recommend their tights to me and ive never had a pair of M&S tights that have lasted more than 2 wears. The vanity sizing there is absolutely ridiculous compared to the rest of the high street too. I take a 12 top, 10 bottom in every other retailer - M&S its 10 and 8, consistently. The clothes are MASSIVE.
Also its like their designers create something really lovely, and then stand back and look at it and go 'right, now how can we make sure this is frumpy' and they will then put a beautifully cut dress in a frumpy print, or a lovely top and bring the neckline up by 2 inches so it flatters no one, or a pair of trousers in a great cut but horrible fabric. They have to be doing it deliberately.

Edited

True. I've always bought my basics in MnS, even when I was a trendy young thing, so bras, knickers, tights, t-shirts. They lasted for years and the t-shirts kept their shape. Now they go all misshapen after the first wash and no amount of pulling rescues them.

Sizing also weird, some size 16 jeans fit, others won't come up over my thighs, and more will gape at the waist.

Jumpers - pill and shrink. Also, why are so many things done in weird colours? I might go looking for a shirt in khaki, but their shirt will be a mucky shade. Yellow - either anaemic or luminous. And as you say, find something in a nice shape, it'll have a huge gapey neckline, or random lace, or mismatched buttons.

As for their knickers, last multipack had 2 pairs where the gusset wasn't fully stitched to the leg. As for the width of their gussets, even when I was a skinny little thing they would've been too narrow. Most uncomfortable, I often feel as if my fanjo is eating them up.

Best places for multipacks now are Primark or Tesco.

Just had a look .Multipacks of basic pants, no lace or fancy trim are £40!!! Can’t bring myself to pay that They are packs of 7 but M&S do the same in 5 packs for £12. Much cheaper but I haven’t tried them lately.

Edited

Multipacks (7) of basic knickers at Next are £15.

Katemax82 · 15/08/2025 15:28

Asda knickers are quite good, especially the microfiber ones. My daughter lives in them

Mistyglade · 15/08/2025 15:49

I’ve just spent some time on the phone to their customer services outlining every issue and point raised here after finally getting through on 0333 014 8555. Those is the ludicrously long email to complain about quality issues apparently Online.service@Bikergrancustomer-support.marksandspencer.com which unsurprisingly isn’t featured on their website
I asked him to pass on my concerns to senior management after a considered and recorded conversation, mainly me talking. Part of me doesn’t know why I’ve bothered but there we are.

I remember buying high leg briefs in the 80’s in black and using them as bikini bottoms. They were really thick strong fabric.

This is because they use different EU to Uk sizing - An EU 34 is an UK 8 in River island but an EU 34 is a UK 6 in M+S. Primark is the same - i always check the EU sizing now - A, an EU 34 on top and an EU 36 on bottom so a size 6 and 8 in M+S but an 8 and 10 in other shops

landlordhell · 15/08/2025 16:11

Maddy Evans has done a lot to modernise M&S.

DramaAlpaca · 15/08/2025 16:15

I've always bought knickers from M&S. I sorted out my overflowing knicker drawer last weekend and got rid of all the old, tatty pairs and also the ones which I never wear because they are uncomfortable.

All the tatty or uncomfortably narrow gusseted ones were the more recently purchased ones, and they went in the bin. Leaving my comfy old faithfuls, some of which I've had for years, which are much better quality.

I tried a multi-pack from Tesco and they seem fine, decent quality and a great price.

I haven't been able to shop online at M&S since the cyber attack because they haven't resumed deliveries in Ireland yet, so recently I went to Dublin to check out an actual store. I was quite disappointed actually, I would normally come home with a few bits but left empty handed. I found the fabric quality of the things I had my eye on to be not great, too much polyester. It's a shame because style wise they've upped their game in recent years, but I really don't want to be wearing nasty synthetic fibres.

But posters aren’t talking about
‘trans women in M&S adverts’. Where have you got that idea? They’ve been commenting on the ability of men to access the women’s fitting rooms, wank into the underwear and leave it in the store, post reviews on M&S platforms about their women’s underwear fetish, which M&S mods actively approve. Any comments on that?

God. Can’t we just have a conversation about the quality of clothes without this endless obsession about men in changing rooms?

Fwiw I still rate Marks for knickers, but I don’t buy multipacks.

Mistyglade · 15/08/2025 16:34

Slightyamusedandsilly · 15/08/2025 11:26

Oh so because I'm not obsessed with anti-trans rhetoric permeating EVERY damn thread, I'm trans?

So the ONLY 2 categories are cis women/anti trans individuals or trans women perverts?

I'd hate to exist in your myopic world.

Well you do exist in it unfortunately and I’d prefer you didn’t use my eye condition as a slur towards other respectful posters.

OP posts:
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/08/2025 16:42

How many people on here have actually found wanked in knickers in a changing room? I’m guessing none.

Straycats · 15/08/2025 16:43

landlordhell · 15/08/2025 06:43

They sent my teen daughter into what was previously the men’s changing room with bras to try. I asked for the women’s changing area and was told it’s unisex now. When I complained a manager came out and basically tried to label me as the one with the problem.

It’s gone woke.
I’ve stopped buying chocolates, cakes and much of their food items. Can’t stand taste of many of them especially palm oil, I get nauseous now.

You’re both engaging in very odd deflections. And you might as well berate the posters who mentioned filthy M&S loos and flies on pastries if you would like to be consistent, if you’re insisting we only mention the quality of the clothes themselves.

All the things discussed on the thread point towards an overall decline in standards and quality, and respect towards customers. It’s not just about the clothes.

John Lewis are much better.

Some people are fine with calling themselves racial slurs.

You have been told, repeatedly, by women on this thread to not use because it is an insult to us.

What sort of person does that?

Monty27 · 16/08/2025 04:07

Never will again buy a jumper in there. The worst quality bobbling pieces to never ever go in my shopping basket. I've even barred vouchers from or to present lists.

I disagree. The attitude of M&S to women - real women - is quite frankly disgusting. I don’t want to come across men in changing rooms. Men have their own changing rooms for privacy, safety and dignity. Why can’t women? Do we not matter to them anymore? It seems to be taken for granted that women will shop in M&S anyway so they can turn their focus to the trans market, much in the same way that they seem to be taking for granted that we will buy our undies their so they can give us terrible quality and we won’t complain.

Glad to hear that so many women are taking their shopping elsewhere. Talking with your feet is the best means of protest.

YelloDaisy · 16/08/2025 05:32

M&S trousers are great - I’ve bought three pairs this year -great quality Cotton and great fit, 3 lengths -oh and I’ve bought 3 bras -also good quality and comfortable.

Are posters Next shareholders?

rwalker · 16/08/2025 06:38

Googling the price of them I wouldn’t expect a premium product for that price your getting what you pay for
