M&S quality so poor now

Bought some plain multipack knickers that I’ve previously had and my fingers have gone straight through the fabric putting them on.

I don’t think it’s ever happened before even with old cheap ones. What the heck is going on with their quality control? Didn’t it used to be their USP?

they do multiple packs of knickers for a price comparable to M&S

Just had a look .Multipacks of basic pants, no lace or fancy trim are £40!!! Can’t bring myself to pay that They are packs of 7 but M&S do the same in 5 packs for £12. Much cheaper but I haven’t tried them lately.

slashlover · 15/08/2025 07:44

I buy men's socks because I have large feet. If I then leave a review, does that mean men's socks are now made for women?

Lifeinthepit · 15/08/2025 07:46

My recent M&S pants have torn and are made of a very thin weird material even though I always chose cotton ones so I'm not sure what's gone wrong there.

I second the Amazon pants. The best knickers I've ever had were from Amazon but sadly discontinued. Still going strong in my knicker drawer though years after purchase.

Which M&S pants have the weird reviews? Unbelievable they don't take them down.

Letgoofmyblank · 15/08/2025 07:50

I must say I cannot stand lace on underwear. It’s itchy, and I just want to wear pants, not feel like I’m dressing to excite the opposite sex. My goodness it’s hard to find a simple bra. They’re all ‘balcony’. I find Sainsbury’s much better.

RedRiverShore5 · 15/08/2025 07:51

I bought some big M&S knickers in the recent sale and they seem fine.

chillycat · 15/08/2025 07:54

I had the same with vests and found Sainsbury's and Tesco much better quality. And for pants. Who would've thought...

RosesAndHellebores · 15/08/2025 07:55

I have no issues with M&S knickers. I usually buy the three packs for about £14.

We've removed this post as it quoted a deleted post.

There is a long running scandal about M&S ‘attracting’ very detailed posts from men about the comfort and ‘excitement’ of wearing some of M&S knickers. They refused to take down these posts although many real women complained about their offensiveness.

Perhaps the male purchasers are motivated by other factors than quality and durability.

yoshiblue · 15/08/2025 08:01

Oh yes, they have been crap for ages! John Lewis are best for 100% cotton short style that I wear. I sometimes pick up Sainsburys TU as well.

beccahamlet · 15/08/2025 03:11

Where's the best place to buy decent knickers from then?

I buy Sloggi. Not the cheapest but excellent quality

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 15/08/2025 08:15

@Mistyglade virtually all their shop floor items are awful now!! not catering for the age groups of everyone. we would all be going around looking like mutton dressed as lamb now! the only thing wearable for me if actually the mom jeans. wouldnt even look at the rest. no idea who is designing all that crap!!

Clearinguptheclutter · 15/08/2025 08:16

I have bought M&S knickers for decades

recently, about half of all knickers in the house (4 of us) literally fell to pieces within a timescale of days

something very weird going on

Daisyvodka · 15/08/2025 08:19

I've never understood the raving about M&S quality - maybe 20 years ago but everyone used to recommend their tights to me and ive never had a pair of M&S tights that have lasted more than 2 wears. The vanity sizing there is absolutely ridiculous compared to the rest of the high street too. I take a 12 top, 10 bottom in every other retailer - M&S its 10 and 8, consistently. The clothes are MASSIVE.
Also its like their designers create something really lovely, and then stand back and look at it and go 'right, now how can we make sure this is frumpy' and they will then put a beautifully cut dress in a frumpy print, or a lovely top and bring the neckline up by 2 inches so it flatters no one, or a pair of trousers in a great cut but horrible fabric. They have to be doing it deliberately.

I thought their clothes quality went off years ago. No better quality than any big supermarket clothing brand at 3-4 times the price.

I think the same. I've bought M&S stuff for decades, but really struggle to buy anything from them these days. I also agree about supermarket clothing which is of equivalent or better quality but a lot cheaper. M&S sizing is also crazy - so many times I've bought a pair of boots, or jeans, and liked them, so gone back to buy identical in a different colour, same size, same range, but the sizing is completely different - not just marginally either - the last jeans were a good couple of inches longer in the leg, but supposed to be the same size/range/product. Quality control has gone to the dogs! If I go to, say, Sainsbury, then the navy and black versions of the same pair of jeans are actually virtually identical sizings - if a supermarket can manage it, why can't M&S?

Chattanoogachoo · 15/08/2025 08:26

Very different department but I'm genuinely shocked at how they accept flies on their bakery food.I've sent them pictures of blow flies on pastries, days later the situation was worse.
No apparent interest in dealing with it.
If you can't do basic food hygiene then knickers quality will hardly be a concern.

I've never forgiven M&S for scrapping their "front fastening" simple bras - they were so comfortable and I bought them for years (probably 20 years!) - ideal for the smaller bust and still pretty with a touch of lace etc. Now it's all, as you say, balcony, or uncomfortable underwired ones, and their "simple" ones are ridiculously frumpy and "granny" like! Again, for me, it's back to supermarkets who still know how to produce and sell basic/simple clothes.

Yup, I never buy "fresh" bread/buns/cakes from them for that very reason. Unfortunately, it's common, and Booths (a Northern "quality" supermarket chain) often do the same with fresh produce in the open! Not just flies, but they're bad enough, but also touched and coughed/sneezed on by other customers - urgh!! Just put them in wrapping or at least under cover!

So true about the "little tweaks". That's what rules out Per Una for me. A few years ago there was a lovely (from the front anyway) orange maxi dress. Very simple and elegant until you turned it around and obvs M&S designers couldn't resist adding a horrible crochet mess. So so annoying.

Whatareyoutalkingaboutnow · 15/08/2025 08:43

I buy my multipack knickers in Tesco, very much better than M&S.
Socks, I buy Next mens. Seemingly indestructible. The womens socks not so much.

There are loads of reviews on their website about how great certain knickers are for ‘tucking’ (which means squashing your cock and balls away). It’s so rank and they obviously have no problem proudly leaving them up.
Slightly off putting to say the least.

The reviews are moderated. They’re actively choosing to publish them.

Thanks for the reminder. There’s a niche set of (cross-dressing) men who like to wank into M+S frillies (in the now-unisex women’s changing room) then put them back on the shelf waiting for women to pick them up. They post about it online. 🤮

M+S apparently see no problem with that and refuse to have a women-only changing area. The men get one, of course.

So wholesome.

I think M&S have lost the plot the last three dresses I bought in there were terrible quality, badly fitted pockets, poor seams or low quality material. I've been buying Marks' dresses for about 15 years and still have a few from years ago. Recent ones are not even close to the old quality
