M&S quality so poor now

Bought some plain multipack knickers that I’ve previously had and my fingers have gone straight through the fabric putting them on.

I don’t think it’s ever happened before even with old cheap ones. What the heck is going on with their quality control? Didn’t it used to be their USP?

Where's the best place to buy decent knickers from then?

Matalan. Best knickers

YelloDaisy · 15/08/2025 06:52

Look. They dont want to lose the trans women market it’s very important to them -oh,hang on what could be the downsides of this for a company that have lost m/billions this year😂

Namechangeragin · 15/08/2025 06:55

Tu in sainsburys.
Wirapa on Amazon.

I used to buy m and s but stopped shopping there a long time ago due to issues raised above (men in the women’s change and fetish reviews online).

Sainsbury's are reasonably good.

I agree, I bought some there recently.

NeelyOHara · 15/08/2025 06:58

Gap online knickers are great.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 15/08/2025 06:58

I got my most recent ones from Next. They’re very good.

There are loads of reviews on their website about how great certain knickers are for ‘tucking’ (which means squashing your cock and balls away). It’s so rank and they obviously have no problem proudly leaving them up.
Slightly off putting to say the least.

M&S knickers are absolutely terrible. They get holes and tears in them within weeks. Such poor quality material and stitching.

This. I bought a load recently and it was a farce the width of the gusset was just too small - I showed DH and it was ridiculous I wanted normal pants not thongs. They were jolly uncomfortable and so I went back (had ordered high legs on line) and it was a joke I took a ruler and measured the width. The materials were thin and very often no hems, gusset was totally wrong - what on earth? I don’t have periods anymore but how the hell would a san pro attach?

When I checked with my other pants (older ones) the gusset used to be over 2 cm wider that’s a hell of a difference. Are they using less fabric to save money on production costs or something?

I popped into the M and S on holiday in Dorset last week - toilets were shocking- one loo and massive queue and really not clean or nice.

DH suggested sloggi but I found some decent ones in Asda.

Read the underwear reviews

ruffler45 · 15/08/2025 07:14

Socks are also abymal quality as well.

The manufacturers have managed to make very very thin threads to make clothing from and the life span of clothes reflects it.

wordywitch · 15/08/2025 07:17

I got a sweatshirt from M&S that developed a hole at the seam near the wrist within days, so I exchanged it. Same thing happened again but near the neckline. Last t-shirt I bought there had holes in it within 3 wears, absolutely rubbish material. Never again.

tequilam0ckingbird · 15/08/2025 07:20

M&S have changed their model I think. The clothes are different than they used to be- more fashionable and cheaper.

For reliable, basic underwear, I like Next. Good range of multipacks of basic pants and they last!

I find Next underwear expensive.

M and S has got really good from a fashion point of view in the last couple of years. Haven’t had any issues with quality. My last knickers were from Tesco.

taxidriver · 15/08/2025 07:24

i cant judge their knickers, no issues i dont think but a couple of years ago i was so shocked at the amount of polyester in their shirts. very disappointing.

BetweenTwoFerns · 15/08/2025 07:24

The knicker thing has happened to me just this week. The tearing, not the cock and balls.

My nearest M&S is piled high with terrible acrylic jumpers for £16. Far worse and yet three times the price of Primark. It’s baffling.

cherrytree12345 · 15/08/2025 07:24

I bought 2 pairs of chinos there in the spring (different colours) and then went back for a 3rd pair in another colour - all supposed to be the same size, I buy long length. When I tried the 3rd pair on at home they were much shorter. I compared them against the other 2 pairs and they were 2-3 cm shorter. I assumed they had labelled them incorrectly and took them back to a different branch. I compared them in store to another pair and they were the same shorter length. I asked a member of staff who said maybe a new supplier. Surely if you buy a long length it should be the same measurements whoever the supplier is.

Ah yes I don’t touch their jumpers! Could not find one wool one last year! They have been good for wide leg trousers/ work wear, jeans and cotton t shirts lately

I naively thought M&S would have sorted this out by now, but just had a quick look and yes, they are still there.

I’m not surprised. I’m one of those who complained about their access to changing rooms policy and received a weaselly reply about inclusion etc. I haven’t used them since. I take great pleasure in buying more than one size and returning one if I keep the other, and telling the staff why I’m returning one if they ask, as most businesses dislike high volume of returns.

Years ago someone bought me a pack of baby vests from Matalan - MIL, devoted M& S shopper, suggested I put them in a charity bag as they wouldn’t be any good. They were very good quality - soft cotton, washed very well. There’s long been an assumption that M&S sold better quality goods that other high street stores, but I’m not convinced. I only buy their knickers because I get the hi leg style and I can’t find them elsewhere. I’ve had the finger through the fabric issue too, although not on first wear.

I did read that had shortened their standard length.

Dragonfly97 · 15/08/2025 07:31

Years ago I worked in a factory making jeans and trousers for Marks & Spencer. Our standards were high and quality was excellent. They dropped us as their supplier and took manufacturing abroad, our factory closed. I noticed their quality has declined, but they wanted cheaper suppliers, so this is the result.

Cat What GIF

How does that make their underwear poor quality?

LillyPJ · 15/08/2025 07:35

I bought a t shirt from M&S last year and a couple from Primark. The M&S one cost 10 times more than a Primark one. The Primark ones are still fine but the M&S one got all wide and the sleeves stretched - it's already been demoted to gardening duties. All washed according to instructions.

they do multiple packs of knickers for a price comparable to M&S

I find Peacock's clothes very good quality.

Yes, their socks are also very good. A lot of their products are 100% cotton, but you have to hunt for them amongst the many made items.
