The UK is launching ‘porn age checks’. This is what will happen

The UK is about to launch some of the strongest checks on pornography in the world.

Good.

Those in the industry have campaigned hard for this, well done to them. Porn should not be a free for all, particularly for young people and children with developing brains and unhindered access to the internet.

Agreed. I think the OP’s attitude is immature, frankly

Very few people are arguing that porn isn't harmful.

This law will do nothing, absolutely nothing, to protect the women in the industry. Porn will still be produced and consumed

Yes. The legally enshrined ability to steal viewers personal data will be an additional revenue stream, it will make porn more profitable, not less.

I think it’s a good thing. Misogny and unrealistic ideas about relationships are very evident in secondary school classrooms. This is due to unfettered porn use.

What about my unrealistic ideas that every time I called a plumber out he'd be a 6'2 tanned Adonis packing equipment so cumbersome he could barely walk straight unassisted?

In reality, last time we had a leaky tap my other half spent three hours in there watching 'Changing Washers for Dummies' YouTube videos on a phone propped on his beer belly, flooded half the downstairs bathroom then rang his dad for moral support.

There are a shocking number of women who don't really approve of sex so this isn't the venue to express concern about the ramifications.

Weird that you make women against porn out to be against sex. Let me put you straight. I love sex. Can't get enough of it. Was pretty wild in my time. Outdoor sex, sex on the beach ( noone else was on the beach it was 4am) . I even banged a stranger in the back of his van once at a rave. I masturbate daily, can't be arsed with men at the moment, life's a bit full on. However I've ALWAYS been against porn. Do you understand that sex isn't porn?

Good.

Not sure why anyone wants to whack off to a trafficked abused woman.

Exactly.

Time to invest in vpn companies

The time was long ago to invest. Unless you mean buy a VPN for personal use? In which case, it is never too late.

loulouljh · 25/07/2025 08:27

Not quite sure what this is intended to achieve. Kids will use VPNs or go onto the dark web. They will still have access! Potentially to worse stuff...

How will they have access to "worse stuff"?

Kids after a quick hand shandy aren't using the dark web 😅

It's intended to put a complicated and annoying barrier in place to stop the majority of underage people casually accessing content.

Obviously anyone determined to see boobs will find a way to see boobs, as they have since the dawn of time.

I love sex. Just don't love the Porn industry which is inextricably linked with rape, abuse and an increase of dangerous and shit sex particularly for girls and women.

TheFrendo · 25/07/2025 08:52

As well as a VPN, you could also use the Tor Browser to be anonymous. You don't get targetted ads and your browsing history will not be sold.

AnnaFrith · 25/07/2025 08:53

I don't understand the thinking that because any barrier to children having free access to horrendous images will never be totally impenetrable, that there is no point putting any barriers in place.

This will make it more difficult for children to access porn. This is a good thing.

Back in the days of sex shops and hedge porn teenagers did not believe that choking and anal sex were a normal part of a sexual relationship. And I never saw stories in the press about adult men raping actual babies.

Easy, instant, and anonymous access to images of constantly escalating depravity has not been good for society.

greengreyblue · 25/07/2025 08:55

Finally something being done to try to stop easy access. Protecting young people’s minds. It’s a start.

GreenIsMyFavoriteColour · 25/07/2025 09:03

Protecting young people’s minds.

Protecting their minds perhaps, but forcing them to hand their personal data to some pretty nasty people.

GreenIsMyFavoriteColour · 25/07/2025 09:06

And these are the guys that are now legally required to have access to bank details, personal information, or at the very least, a photo.

Very many chn won’t and that’s the point. If it’s harder they will be deterred.

Apologies if said already, but you don't need to upload your ID. You can verify via your primary email address so long as it has your age in the settings

Christinapple · 25/07/2025 09:15

RowanRed90 · 25/07/2025 06:30

Not unenforceable, but unenforced. There are laws like that already. And it is then in the authorities gift not to go after you, unless they choose to, unless they don't like you for some other reason and this gives them the means to punish.

If you have any ideas how to enforce a law against looking at porn online or offline e.g. magazines (yes Iceland made that illegal too) I'm sure the Icelandic authorities would be glad to hear it.

Even if it were possible to be enforced and LE chose to enforce it I'm not sure it would be in a country's best interest to give 70% of the population a criminal record.

Tia247 · 25/07/2025 09:34

I'm really pleased about this. It may not be perfect but it will certainly prevent young children stumbling across stuff. I expect the majority of people who aren't happy are male 'but it's not completely perfect' bleat, bleat, bleat.

Yeah I do think anyone who is extremely anti porn with no nuance has a messed up attitude to sex and an unsatisfying sex life. I feel bad for your partners if you have them and I feel bad for you that you won't ever know this aspect of the human experience in all its giddy, delicious glory.

I don't personally find porn that sexually satisfying but I know plenty of people do and I am pleased for them. "Use your imagination", "read some EROTIC POEMS", "gaze at the majesty of your own unwaxed yoni!". Whatever you do you some people like porn.

Fragmentedbrain · 25/07/2025 09:40

And it really irritates me that moron parents will still be handing their kids smartphones at 11 then getting shocked when they still cyber bully, access drugs, kill themselves. Take some damn responsibility for your own progeny.

Yeah so it's a deterrent in the eyes of the puritan brigade. A restriction on adult sexuality because they can't enjoy sex and feel furious with those who can.

I'm extremely anti-porn because I'm anti abuse of women.

I'm also anti FGM, anti domestic abuse, anti controlling behaviour, anti prostitution (but not anti prostituted women), anti upskirting, anti surrogacy, anti online trolling and abuse of women, anti femicide.

I'm unapologetic about all of that. None of it has anything to do with my sex life and everything to do with supporting women's rights and wanting women to be seen as full human beings rather than pieces of flesh with holes and a womb whose only purpose is to satisfy men's wishes.

That's terrible advice. Use a VPN. Do not tell these sites anything about yourself. Definitely not an email address.

What goes through people's minds? 🤯

skymagentatwo · 25/07/2025 09:54

Every one just installs a free VPN program or VPN based browser, every kid on the block shares it and the digital id is complete waste of time. 😂

Every one saying good, has zero thought of the unintended consequences either 🙄
