The UK is launching ‘porn age checks’. This is what will happen

The UK is about to launch some of the strongest checks on pornography in the world.

Are you kidding? Half the home page of Pornhub is some gross step incest stuff. The whole thing is ruining a generation. And young women come off worst when practices like choking becomes mainstream via porn.

LBFseBrom · 25/07/2025 06:08

This is a joke post I assume.

It will reduce the amount of younger teens able to access it though. Most 12 year olds won't be readily able to use a vpn.
It stops impulsive curiosity leading to watching it and means it has to really be planned out.

12 is more than old enough to know what a VPN is, and while they may not have the means to pay for a premium one they could as said above just take a minute to download a browser with a free one built in. Kids that age are more clued in about the internet than the middle-aged politicians who wrote the bill.

And if anyone in Britain doesn't know what a VPN is today trust me everyone will in a month's time as people tell each other. "Hey I can't look at porn anymore do I need to verify my ID?", "nah just download the Brave or TOR browser see", "oh yeah thanks".

I guess the alternative is to ban it all together.

I support it.

How do you propose a blanket ban on porn and anything the Gov thinks isn't suitable for our delicate eyes (like drinking support subs on reddit) would work? It isn't possible unless you cut Britain's internet off from the rest of the world like N. Korea. If porn sites are blocked a VPN would still get around it.

Or you could try making it illegal to look at internet porn like Iceland did in 2009? Guess what, that became an unenforceable law that had zero effect no one cares about.

SprayWhiteDung · 24/07/2025 23:53

Not interested in porn at all, so this sounds like a very good thing.

I can just see it before long creeping into other areas of 'grown-up' and potentially controversial subject matter and stick another knife into personal privacy and freedoms in a social credit-style system.

Yep, this does feel like the start

But like you, I'm happy to see some restrictions. Although it's really just a bar to entry, apparently an AI generated version will grant access.

babyproblems · 25/07/2025 06:30

I think it’s a great thing and it’s too little too late. Everything is so over sexualised now; and porn becoming mainstream is not ok. DH stayed at a hotel for work a few nights ago and he said when you turn the tv on, the main menu is ‘films / xxx / xxx gay’. It’s all too much and the stupid accessibility is so so damaging to young people. I suppose you could argue that parents should’ve been much much more aware and up to the challenge but if they have a phone I don’t know how much you can really stop it being in front of them.

Not unenforceable, but unenforced. There are laws like that already. And it is then in the authorities gift not to go after you, unless they choose to, unless they don't like you for some other reason and this gives them the means to punish.

PreciousTatas · 25/07/2025 06:36

Good.

Use your imagination, it is severely lacking in many individuals these days.

Imagination is free. It's unlimited and unrestricted. It doesn't contribute financially to sexual abuse and rape. It doesn't poison the minds of young children before they've even hit puberty. It doesn't have to gradually get more and more extreme to get you off. It won't dull your physical responses to actual, real life sex.

Try it. You might like it.

Iamthemoom · 25/07/2025 06:44

Well hopefully you understand why this is happening and care about the victims in the 10 million videos Pornhub had to take down because they couldn’t prove the age or consent of the children and women in the videos. You probably need to educate yourself about the reality behind the porn you consume and how the company behind most of the porn sites makes their money. Here’s a very short video to help you.

Good. If it were up to me you'd have to go down to a little shop on an out of town industrial estate to buy it.

KPPlumbing · 25/07/2025 06:54

DH is going go get me sorted with a vpn. I like porn! I understand Albania is a good country to set your location to...

TimeForABreak4 · 25/07/2025 07:00

I think it's great. If you really want to watch it then simply upload your id.

PerfectTuesday · 25/07/2025 07:15

I don't care about porn - as the OP suggests, my imagination can deliver perfectly good and ideally tailored 'porn' to me if needed, and the ethics involved in the production of at least some internet pornography are concerning.

However, I am concerned about the wider implications of this, and the slippery slope factor. First porn - and then what? If it becomes the norm on the internet it could curtail people's freedom to express controversial views and also cut off people who don't have the required ID or who for some reason can't pass whatever AI test assesses their photo or video for age.

randomchap · 25/07/2025 07:17

TimeForABreak4 · 25/07/2025 07:00

I think it's great. If you really want to watch it then simply upload your id.

It's easily bypassed and will give parents the false sense of security. Teenagers will still access it and parents won't think they can

A more useful way of stopping the harm is through education and parenting.

If that education could include other types of online harm such as misinformation and Andrew Tate style misogynistic crap that would be good too

This law will be minimally effective at best

ForHeartyPeachOtter · 25/07/2025 07:24

Apparently people are already getting around the Reddit ban by looking up UK driving licence on google images and just using that. Apparently if it has fingers in it, the system will accept it. Just goes to show how easy it’ll be to get round this stuff.

But get a VPN anyway. It’s worth using as internet censorship is just going to get worse. I’m not bothered about porn but I can see the way the tide is turning. The proton vpn app is easy to use.

I mean of course, if the image of the driving licence has someone’s fingers in it, the system apparently accepts it. I’m tired and worded that so badly!

myplace · 25/07/2025 07:28

Some people are really invested in rubbishing this, it seems.

Alcohol sales laws don’t stop kids accessing alcohol- yet still we enforce them.
Speed limits don’t stop all speeding.
Laws about violence don’t stop all violence.
The determined will always find a way.
Nothing is foolproof.

However, it seems a small price to pay for making accessing harmful content online slightly harder. Delaying access is a good thing, even if it isn’t foolproof and doesn’t delay as long as we’d like.

And yeah. I’m judging those who have an issue with this really hard.

Ooothatsagoodone · 25/07/2025 07:29

Photo ID should definitely be used. It would stop a lot of men too because they wouldn't want to do that either

LadyBracknellsHandbagg · 25/07/2025 07:39

Maybe consider a new hobby. Oh and consider that the porn industry as a whole is based on the abuse of women. Just a thought.

Very few people are arguing that porn isn't harmful.

This law will do nothing, absolutely nothing, to protect the women in the industry. Porn will still be produced and consumed

VPNs get around it with no photo id needed.

Fake IDs are being shown to work

Needsleepneedcoffee · 25/07/2025 07:48

I think this is a good thing OP.
I really do. I have concerns about what porn is doing to our society and I think making it less readily accessible is going to be quite useful.

Thebottomdrawer · 25/07/2025 07:54

@youreactinglikeafunmum

It’s maybe a good insensitive to reevaluate your porn consumption. I watched the pornhub Netflix doc and it stopped me using free sites.

Good female run and centred porn is available behind a paywall . Bellesa, Frolicme and Erica Lust are available amongst others. Also sites like make love not porn are feel more ethical.

I ended going the whole way and turning to Audioporn as it doesn’t involve anyone’s body. I use Bloom stories which is pretty hot and lots of other interesting features like being able to sync with some toys (Lovense)

Your afternoons may actually improve 😳

GreenIsMyFavoriteColour · 25/07/2025 08:00

Opera has a VPN button so easy to avoid giving personal data to porn sites. (The dodgiest of dodgy sites, IMHO.)

Terrible piece of legislation.

ChristmasFluff · 25/07/2025 08:01

I think we forget that there used to be regulation of porn which did not infringe on freedom of speech or create a slippery slope; and its widespread availability to all and sundry has only resulted in bad consequences.

Only the other day I was saying to my son how things were better in the olden days, when you had to go to a sex shop to get properly dirty movies and magazines. I presume these places still exist for OP??
