Here's the link: https://www.independent.co.uk/tech/uk-porn-age-verification-b2795354.html

I heard about this happening in france and thought 'thank fuck its not happening here'

What will I do on those late nights or mid afternoons before pick up?? Just use my imagination, like a prehistoric cave woman???

😡🙈😡

The UK is launching ‘porn age checks’. This is what will happen

The UK is about to launch some of the strongest checks on pornography in the world.

Just get a vpn, won’t be giving my id to Reddit to access various subreddits like stop drinking sub, that now needs ID.

Fragmentedbrain · 25/07/2025 00:32

There are a shocking number of women who don't really approve of sex so this isn't the venue to express concern about the ramifications.

"you'll have to upload ID to watch porn"

Only if complying websites (yes, websites need to comply) think you're from the UK. Get a VPN and set it to any other country (that doesn't have age verification). Have no idea what a VPN is? Just download a browser with a free one built in (e.g. Brave) and Bob's your uncle.

Pornhub is compliant but some people seem to think PH is the only porn site on the internet. Guess what? There are hundreds of thousands of porn sites. Over 99% of them aren't going to give a damn about the UK's age verification (each site has to add a landing page for UK visitors). PH is blocked and no VPN set up? No prob just go back to Google and search (and end up on a lesser known and more dodgy porn site probably).

From a discussion I just saw it's also apparently easily fooled by using a stock image from image search of someone holding a driving licence.

Then we have the security and privacy risk. Everyone who is foolish enough to verify their ID is going on a porn user database. It's not a "if" this database will be leaked it will be a when.

The UK has been considering this idea since 2013, scrapped it in 2019 but then brought it back with the Online Harms Bill. It's the sort of law that looks good in paper but is a train wreck in reality.

You don’t need to upload ID. Most work on facial recognition. No details at all need to be submitted.

Borogrover · 25/07/2025 00:38

Hopefully less people will be watching porn now too, due to not wanting to upload their face to the internet! I would certainly be nervous to upload my photo or ID and potentially have it linked to whatever I was watching! I don't watch porn so am happy this is happening.

That’s not how it works. Images aren’t stored. The same happens with a lot of AV facial recognition tools these days.

Borogrover · 25/07/2025 00:40

Though have just read on Reddit that many people are bypassing by downloading photos of drivers licenses from the internet (potentially giving away a bypass here but it's all over the internet anyway!). Hmmmm....

Fair enough. I live over here in my little Mumsnet corner 😅 I know nothing!

I can approve of sex without approving of children having access to violent pornography.

TooBigForMyBoots · 25/07/2025 00:42

At fucking last!👏👏👏👏👏👏

Should have been do enough over a decade ago @youreactinglikeafunmum.

GrandTheftWalrus · 25/07/2025 00:44

Also I dont watch it but saw the article on BBC news. I wouldn't watch it.

randomchap · 24/07/2025 23:56

The problem is, it won't work. Setting up a vpn takes a couple of minutes and bypasses the block.

The harm that porn causes teenagers can only be mitigated through education and parenting. Having those difficult conversations about the dangers.

Having this block in might lead parents to think that porn is inaccessible online, and give them a false sense of security

It will reduce the amount of younger teens able to access it though. Most 12 year olds won't be readily able to use a vpn.
It stops impulsive curiosity leading to watching it and means it has to really be planned out.

MsChilds · 25/07/2025 00:47

I remember the days when you had to rent it buy porn films…there might be a resurgence in uploading onto dvds

MeinKraft · 25/07/2025 00:47

Don’t care if adults use porn but if it reduces children’s exposure to porn then that’s great. Everything we can do to reduce the risk of children being exposed to sexual images should be done.

TheSilentSister · 25/07/2025 00:50

Agree with you @MeinKraft. I haven't watched for years, it all got a bit 'nasty'.
I'd hate my DS being exposed to it now.
Love your username by the way, do you play it?

Rreel · 25/07/2025 00:52

The law is far beyond just porn, it’s not crazy to think mumsnet will have to fall into it due to the sex board, but also the feminist board too.

it’s a fairly shitty law regardless even just looking at porn sites, most teens are aware of vpns and there will be plenty of sites that don’t abide by it.

GrandTheftWalrus · 25/07/2025 00:55

Might bring back magazines and hedge porn.

I don't think I have ever met a woman who didn't "approve" of sex. What does that even mean? I can't believe that a woman would write this about other women.

Looking back it’s strange to think how prevalent it was. It feels like a very inefficient way to access porn but was remarkably effective at the time.

Porn is not the same as sex, in the same way that Eastenders or Squid Game are not, in fact, real life. Hate to break it to you.
