What will I do on those late nights or mid afternoons before pick up?? Just use my imagination, like a prehistoric cave woman???

😡🙈😡

The UK is launching ‘porn age checks’. This is what will happen

The UK is about to launch some of the strongest checks on pornography in the world.

Agree that our kids need protecting from porn - but given how easy it is to bypass this, its not for me

And i wonder what the rich and famous are doing in the face of this ban - they must have a way around it 🤔

But it's not a ban is it. The way around it is to do the age verification.

Brilliant!
The internet is broken in my opinion.

It burst on the scene with no understanding or regulation, the money men and fraudsters were making money and breaking laws before the government stopped calling it the information superhighway! Over half of what you see and read is unverified, reports that all link those unverified sources, deliberately falsely created content, AI and bots.

Ive held the view for a few years that the only fix is to build a new one. A secure internet where you have to id&v to even access, where all the proper retailers and banks operate and where the social media is covered by defamation and libel laws and is properly enforced as built correctly and we know who everyone is.

Dont give me the free speech public square waffle, if you go spouting whatever in the public square people can see you and identify you! Private sites would still be private, as would anonymous support groups etc It’s one of the subjects china is absolutely correct on.

Im sure many will disagree but the internet today is downright dangerous for a lot of people, Porn being the tip of a giant iceberg.

It's the end of the Internet as we know it anyway with AI.

I read an article in the Economist about how many sites are losing traffic because we just ask chat GPT which summarises the answer. I'm not sure what that means. Maybe chat GPT has to pay the sites to access its info or something.

CanSeeClearlyNowTheRainHasGone · 26/07/2025 23:05

Hmm, surely the ID should be checking you're over 16, not over 18...

Didn't we all agree that 16 year-olds should be allowed to vote??

Because they're not immature and can make.up their own minds about what is legit?

lowkey33 · 26/07/2025 23:19

I had an Inkling that this forum had a certain type of demographic with a particular mentality .. and boy was I right.

80% say this person is unreasonable?

I'm sorry but if you can't comprehend why digital ID for 'unsafe' content is a problem on so many levels you are likely a very stupid person.

Tiedbutchorestodo · 26/07/2025 23:29

I think it’s a good thing. I’m not sure it will stop tech savvy younger people as much as it’s supposed to but I think it will probably put off a lot of older less tech people who won’t want to submit ID. As I’ve aged I’ve felt more and more uneasy about porn so anything that reduces demand and therefore production has to be a good thing.

Tollington · 26/07/2025 23:47

I’m not tech savvy but in less than five minutes I’m back on Reddit browsing NSFW subs

If I can do that so can young kids

porn hub just wanted an email address and nothing else to age verify took less than a minute they obviously have a way of knowing how old an email address is

Touchingly naive. You have no idea what they did with that email address. It's entirely possible they didn't check your age at all, just sold it to scammers. Or maybe they used it as intended and then still sold it to scammers.

And that's at the more legit end of the market. The small sites that routinely give their viewers viruses and malware are going to have a field day with bank details and email addresses.

Giving porn sites your personal data is insane, they are not trustworthy.

The majority of the 'big' sites that people visit are owned by one company. They make an absolute FORTUNE through their legitimate business, literal billions. They have no need whatsoever to sell your details to scammers for pennies.

They are almost universally using independent third part verification services that already existed. You're able to check exactly what happens with your data before submitting it.

And that's at the more legit end of the market. The small sites that routinely give their viewers viruses and malware are going to have a field day with bank details and email addresses.

It's not 2010 anymore - these sites pretty much died out when The Hub and similar sites popped up offering content safely, anonymously and for free.

Besides, anyone dumb enough to put their bank details into a random grot site full of pop ups in 2025 deserves everything they get.

OonaStubbs · 27/07/2025 00:26

I wish porn would just go away, there's no need for it to exist.

Velmy · 27/07/2025 00:28

RafaistheKingofClay · 26/07/2025 07:00

But it isn’t a complicated and annoying barrier. It’s barely a barrier at all. So kids still have all the access to exactly the same porn they had before the legislation came in.

Honestly, we need to be less worried about the attitude of the OP and more worried about the children of parents who think their children have been made safer by this legislation. Because that is the attitude that is going to be putting children at risk.

It's a complicated and annoying barrier for young children who might be brave enough to go on The Hub when their parents are out doing the weekly shop, but probably won't be brave enough to enter their mum's email address or scan their dad's passport for fear of getting caught.

It's intended to mitigate, not to be a magic solution to stop all kids accessing inappropriate content.

I completely agree with your point about parents. I think all parents in this day and age should be having full and frank discussions with their children about the pornography they'll inevitably see on the internet, instead of relying on the content providers to do their job for them.

If people enjoy it, and are willing to pay for it, there's a reason for it to exist.

People enjoy heroin and are willing to pay for it and yet that is illegal.

Teasloth · 27/07/2025 00:37

Good. Hope they make it really difficult for people to access and the whole industry burns

surelynot16 · 27/07/2025 00:48

It won’t work. Most (if not all) under 18’s already have VPNs installed on their consoles/pc/laptops so they can download certain games with age restrictions or games that have been released early in other countries usually Australia/china etc.. so they can get it first.

Just FYI, you can't install a VPN on any console.

Games are almost universally released on the same date across the globe nowadays (maybe with a few hours time difference), aside from countries with censorship issues.

The main reason kids use VPNs on computers/laptops is to access geoblocked content, geoblocked sites (UK Internet providers have a legal obligation to block torrent sites, or sites that illegally stream sports, for example), or to access legit services at much cheaper international rates.

Velmy · 27/07/2025 01:08

People enjoy heroin and are willing to pay for it and yet that is illegal.

And yet there are people using it every day, in every city, all over the world, rich and poor. So criminalising it clearly does fuck all, except trapping the most vulnerable users in a horrible cycle.

Besides, it's apples to oranges.

Heroin has a much larger negative footprint than pornography. Therefore we put much stricter controls on it.

There's every reason to regulate the adult entertainment industry, and no reason whatsoever to outlaw it.

Pornography has led to increased worldwide misogyny.

Pornography has led to increased worldwide misogyny.

Making naive people (largely women, I suspect) hand their personal data to scammers and blackmailers while 99% of the rest have an invisible solution on day one doesn't fix that.

And heroin kills people, costs millions to treat/address, causes generational social issues, petty crime, organised crime, international crime, fuels wars...I could go on for pages.

surelynot16 · 27/07/2025 04:01

@VelmyThats not true. A VPN can be set up on PlayStation 4/5 easily on internet explorer via an ethernet cable.
As for gaming as I already said Australia, china etc get it in advance (earlier) hence why the use VPNs such as sharksurf so the game can download at midnight Aussie time.
Especially when your DC do online gaming with people from all over the globe they get that real FOMO if anyone gets in first.

Internet Explorer? 😂

I'll say it again - consoles do not support VPNs. You cannot set one up on a console.

If you're suggesting that a VPN can be set up via a web browser on a PC or laptop, which is then connected to a console with an Ethernet cable, then it's not set up on the console, is it? It's set up on the browser on another device. No VPN that I'm aware of offers this service for free.

Also, most high demand games have, for years, allowed users to pre-download the software prior to launch to avoid this issue.

So no, most/all under 18s do not have VPNs for this reason.

randomchap · 27/07/2025 09:36

You might not be able to set one up on your console, but it's easy enough to set on up on your router so all devices use the vpn

smallglassbottle · 27/07/2025 10:22

Interesting what people are saying about VPNs. I've just tried to use a VPN to access an American site which the UK have banned access to. I can't get onto the site in spite of the VPN. They're not a magic bullet. We're now entering a new censorship phase I would say. I'll try using my phone data instead of the wifi and see if that works.

Boomer55 · 27/07/2025 10:26

NellitheNelephant · 25/07/2025 00:22

I think it's fantastic. Well done, Uk.

And me. Porn gives a totally unrealistic view of life. It’s so fake it’s laughable.

But, if you like/need to watch it, then just upload ID 🤷‍♀️

If it does help to keep children away from it, then great. 👍

smallglassbottle · 27/07/2025 11:01

No, blocked. So the internet providers are doing it at source.

This is the beginning of serious censorship where people will be prevented from discussing things that are concerning them. This isn't about pornography or children, that's merely a sideshow.
