Partner got really funny about swimwear I wore to work away day

We had a two day work ‘away trip’ last week where one of the bonding things was going to an indoor swimming complex with slides etc. Really fun!

When I got back from this, my partner said ‘you didn’t wear a bikini did you’- which I said I obviously did.

He thinks that’s disrespectful and I should have worn a swim suit ‘rather than have my arse out in front of colleagues’(!)

I told him he can’t control what I wear and he got the hump. He thinks I was trying to make myself attractive and impress colleagues..

Would you say I should have ‘covered up’ or is he being unreasonable

A thong is totally inappropriate for a work event. I can't believe anyone would think otherwise. I'm curious as to how many others wore them?

JadeHoliday · 09/07/2025 11:33

Yeah it was but I really don’t see the issue

I think just generally wearing what amounts to a thong and bra with colleagues is a bit.. OTT.

Surely there were options other than a thong? And while I support your body your choice i do see your partners point.

ColinCaterpillarsNo1Fan · 12/07/2025 22:07

I certainly wouldn't have worn a thong bikini to a work event. There needs to be a professional distance between your personal & work life; thong bikinis should remain in your personal life.

Just like I don't share much about my personal life at work, I certainly don't show the rest of my body to my colleagues either. It just seems a bit weird to show my arse in a thong to my manager & then go into a team meeting or annual review the following week. I'm surprised that you can't seem to join the dots here, there needs to be boundaries between your personal & professional life.

I do sot if agree that a thong back is not appropriate for a work event. I'd have gone for shorts / tanking type thing.

It's interesting that you felt the need to specify thong "back" - to my knowledge, bikinis only come with the thong at the back. A thong-fronted bikini doesn't really bear thinking about.

Too late - I just thought about it 🙈

Check out “extreme thongs” or “micro thongs”. Some of them are not far off what you’re picturing!

Really? I do not think people can "wear what tbey want, when they want" when there are dress codes and decency for other people. I do not get these thong bikinis and need to display so much skin in public even on a beach. We don't need to see other's backsides being in public and I think some countries have it right whatever gender is wearing a thong bikini or little speedos. Wearing a thong one to a work trip isn't appropriate and can see why her boyfriend was upset, but he seems controlling to say about no bikini, but at a work trip wearing one that covers up more is more decent to wear. People who feel a need to have so much flesh on display have issues imo to either get so much outside praise, have their worth wrapped in their looks etc. Thong bikinis are ugly even on the most beautiful 20/30 something. OP, nobody needs to be seeing your ass in public.

@OneBlossomBee why did you ignore half of what I wrote?

I said - I believe that people should be able to wear what they like when they like - but with this mantra you need self reflection and responsibility.

You need to ask yourself:
Is what I am wearing appropriate for the task / people I am meeting with today? How do I want 'me' to come across today?

I agree with you that wearing a thong bikini on a work trip is a poor choice. Other people will judge @JadeHoliday for what she wore - that's normal, everyone judges everyone else all the time. They make assumptions just because of the way people dress / speak/ body language etc.

Some people love to express themselves by what they wear and that's fine but they need to know there are consequences of those decisions both positive and negative.

I looked, but I couldn't see the micro thongs 🤔

@JadeHoliday what are your thoughts?

NoSoupForU · 13/07/2025 14:23

Its really fucking weird to want to wear a thong bikini to a work social and suggests a real lack of boundaries.

As for your partner, I can see where he's coming from.

Why don’t people return to their threads? Makes me think it’s all false….they dump and run!

I think your in the right and it shouldn't matter if its a thong its just a bikini no big deal,

JohnofWessex · 13/07/2025 21:38

I suspect that they didn't get the response they were hoping for

I might also add that different workplaces have different behaviours

My current one is a bit po faced over certain things not that there is anything wrong with it

In the past I have had my bum pinched and some quiet personal information discussed

Solocup · 14/07/2025 01:21

So cringe. A thong at an indoor pool is so attention seeking.. embarrassing. I didn’t realise actual adults would do that.

Dancingintherainxxx · 14/07/2025 01:52

A thong bikini around colleagues ????? Girl.. so inappropriate. Why did you wear that none of your colleagues need to see what you had for breakfast 😂

Maybe depends where your from i guess fairly common when ive been swimming, for the last year or so, you can get professional swimwear with a thong back

I’m clearly sheltered 😆
The teens wear them but I get that, they’re impressionable slaves to fashion. I actually think thong bikinis look super sexy, it’s more that going for sexy at a family pool seems weird. I think it’s fair the bf thought the same. Without that extra info made him sound like a controlling knob. On a beach in Ibiza I totally get. Like I’d wear hot pants clubbing but not to Tesco.

As it was a work away trip a nice one piece would have been more appropriate I think.
Apart from anything, something more practical would have been sensible for slides and other stuff like that.
im my youth I went body boarding and my bikini top was continually knocked off, not the same thing but skimpy/sexy is for the beach not for work event with colleagues imo

Whether it may or may not be ‘appropriate’ in the context is separate to me here (and not something I particularly have an opinion on personally). He just doesn’t get to tell you what to wear.

From someone who’s never really worn bikinis and nowadays would prefer to wear a full wetsuit situation whoever I was with. 😆

No he doesn’t get to tell her what to wear, as it was he only found out what OP was wearing after the fact.
But perhaps he was shocked by the OPs choice of swimwear and it just came out as controlling.
Not sure there is an equivilant to wearing a thong bikini for the partner, but if there was I know I would feel uncomfortable at my partners choice if they wore something so skimpy .
Especially as it sounds like a boisterous day in the water park when there are slides etc, why would you want to risk your work colleagues getting an eyeful when your boobs slip out or your bum is left even more exposed, when you have to see them at work the next day.
