Partner got really funny about swimwear I wore to work away day

We had a two day work ‘away trip’ last week where one of the bonding things was going to an indoor swimming complex with slides etc. Really fun!

When I got back from this, my partner said ‘you didn’t wear a bikini did you’- which I said I obviously did.

He thinks that’s disrespectful and I should have worn a swim suit ‘rather than have my arse out in front of colleagues’(!)

I told him he can’t control what I wear and he got the hump. He thinks I was trying to make myself attractive and impress colleagues..

Would you say I should have ‘covered up’ or is he being unreasonable

Yeah, a thong bikini (or a thong swimsuit for that matter) is totally inappropariate attire for a work away day.

I also think with slides etc, a bikini is a bad choice as it's more likely to slip and slide, hence exposing you.

On a team event, it would be much more appropriate to wear something with full coverage, as no-one wants to see their colleagues arse or cleavage. A modest one piece (with full bum coverage) or a tanktini would be far more appropriate.

PinkyFlamingo · 09/07/2025 11:42

Well of course you should be able to wear what you want, but a thong bikini in front of work colleagues?

ZoggyStirdust · 09/07/2025 11:42

Work event at a swimming pool?

fuck no

Icanttakethisanymore · 09/07/2025 11:41

To be fair a work trip to a waterpark is not a professional environment.

It's not, but it's akin to a work party I suppose - how revealing is it ok to go at the Christmas do? Etc

crumblingschools · 09/07/2025 11:42

A swimsuit would seem more appropriate for a work event and one that gives reasonable coverage. In the same way I wouldn’t want Dave from accounts wearing teeny speedos.

Alaja · 09/07/2025 11:43

Not having your arse out in front of your colleagues is a given surely. A thong bikini is in no way appropriate.

FeverDreamHighInTheNight · 09/07/2025 11:43

I can't think of any workplace I've ever been in at any age where I would have been up for going swimming with my team - but if I was, it would definitely be in a full coverage swimsuit! I would never have wanted to see any of my colleagues' bums - but then I really don't like the thong bikini fashion anyway as I also don't want to see strangers' arses round the pool or at the beach. It's totally normal now though so I expect it - I was always astonished on Love Island when they all meet the parents and the girls are in thongs. The idea of having your whole bum exposed in public and especially when meeting your partner's parents or hanging out with workmates feels like an anxiety dream to me!

Painrelief · 09/07/2025 11:43

I kind of see his point . But I guess it depends on what type of job you do . Would it be appropriate to turn upto work in cycling shorts or a low cut blouse . Or is it quite formal ?
I would sort of suspect the swimwear attire should match your every day work wear .

I can’t think of anything worse than wearing a swimming costume never mind a bikini infront of my colleagues 🤣 I would feel like that’s too personal lol

holysmokee · 09/07/2025 11:43

My DH wouldn’t be bothered in the slightest, I don’t actually own a swimsuit that doesn’t show cheek and wouldn’t buy one on account of swimming with coworkers. The idea of swimming with them at all is a bit strange though.

AmyDudley · 09/07/2025 11:44

Totally innapproriate for a work away day. Unless your job is thong bikini model.

Icanttakethisanymore · 09/07/2025 11:44

Hmmm, true but I would say that once you are all in your swimwear, thong or no thong it's all pretty revealing. Bikinis inevitably disappear up your arse anyway.

Having said that, no way I'd be reaching for the thong bikini for a work pool trip (but then I don't have one to reach for anyway).

Ontheedgeofit · 09/07/2025 11:44

More to the point.. I’m so glad I don’t work where you work. That sounds like an awful thing to do with colleagues.

And I have a pretty good ass so that’s not the problem for me.

Comedycook · 09/07/2025 11:44

Work event I'd probably opt for a one piece rather than a bikini...but I wouldn't think it's a big deal. Thong bikini is definitely a bit much imo.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 09/07/2025 11:44

Some utter shite being posted lately, have to say I haven't seen a thong one for at least 2 or 3 days tho

Anotherheatwave · 09/07/2025 11:45

If it was a thong then yes you did ‘have your arse out in front of colleagues’ as your partner said.

Was anyone else wearing a thong bikini? I am probably out of touch as I am not in my 30s and would never wear one anyway!

DiscoBob · 09/07/2025 11:45

I think I would find it a wee bit cringe if a colleague wore a thong to a works away day in an indoor pool. Not because it's too provocative or sexy, just because it is quite exposing. And I'm not keen on the way they look on anyone.

I mean I personally wouldn't wear a thong at all, even in private. Again not because I hate my arse, I just don't like the aesthetic.

But he shouldn't have approached it in the way he did. He should've said in a jokey way it might have seemed a bit OTT.

But it's of course your choice what you wear, not his.

User415373 · 09/07/2025 11:47

An indoor pool work bonding away day is my idea of hell. How strange.

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 09/07/2025 11:36

A thong bikini is a dreadful choice for a work thing.

This. Regardless of your partner's thoughts.

It's also a weird choice for a place with water slides. Too much risk of wardrobe malfunctions.

sandwichlover93 · 09/07/2025 11:50

I don’t think it’s up to your partner to police what you wear. But also I’d never wear a thong bikini in front of colleagues.

JadeHoliday · 09/07/2025 11:51

We’ve all got each other on insta so they’ve seen it all before with holidays pics etc 😂

Honestly a thong bikini is not suitable for a work event.
You do say that he says he would have an issue if you wore a ordinary bikini too. What is he like in general? Does he question what you wear going out etc?

its2025 · 09/07/2025 11:51

MauraLabingi · 09/07/2025 11:37

Crikey OP. I wouldn't want my office colleagues seeing my bum cheeks in a thong either. That's just too far. I'd wear a non-indecent swimsuit or a tankini top with shorts.

But if YOU are happy sitting at work knowing that Jim, Dave and Darren are all thinking about your thong bikini, that's up to you. Nothing to do with your DH.

This 100%!!
@JadeHoliday I think YABU to wear a thong bikini in a water park with slides but hey it's not my choice and it's not your partners either.

No not before this, it was out of the blue

Yeah it was but I really don’t see the issue

I want to change my vote on this now - YABU to wear a thong in front of work colleagues imo

MauriceTheMussel · 09/07/2025 11:52

HTF was this event rubber-stamped by HR?!
