Partner got really funny about swimwear I wore to work away day

We had a two day work ‘away trip’ last week where one of the bonding things was going to an indoor swimming complex with slides etc. Really fun!

When I got back from this, my partner said ‘you didn’t wear a bikini did you’- which I said I obviously did.

He thinks that’s disrespectful and I should have worn a swim suit ‘rather than have my arse out in front of colleagues’(!)

I told him he can’t control what I wear and he got the hump. He thinks I was trying to make myself attractive and impress colleagues..

Would you say I should have ‘covered up’ or is he being unreasonable

Sounds like an Only Fans away day - or Only Thongs

Blondiney · 09/07/2025 17:32

Nobody wants to see your dirt chute, dear.

Hmmm, true but I would say that once you are all in your swimwear, thong or no thong it's all pretty revealing. Bikinis inevitably disappear up your arse anyway.

Having said that, no way I'd be reaching for the thong bikini for a work pool trip (but then I don't have one to reach for anyway).

Edited

Think something may be wrong with your bikinis if they disappear up your arse

KnewYearKnewMe · 09/07/2025 17:48

What sort of work do you do, OP?

I’ve always been in corporate - there is no way anything that requires mixed underdressing would ever be appropriate.

unless you work with all women?

Why has mumsnet removed the laughing emoji? but yes this 🤣👏

I don’t know but it is still very much needed 🤣

UsingAMansNameInAWomensWorld · 09/07/2025 17:52

Ffs some people are ridiculous

It wasn't to the office and if your work outing is to the swimming pool then you're going to see more of your colleagues than normal

Just like Christmas/Summer/Staff parties don't follow workwear rules either 🤣🤣

standtherebicycle · 09/07/2025 17:54

This sounds like my absolute worst nightmare ever of a work away day. I think once you've agreed to spend a day with your colleagues in swimwear you may as well wear whatever swimwear you like.

CharismaticPelican · 09/07/2025 17:58

I must be really laid back because this wouldn't bother me in the slightest. If a man was wearing tight Speedos and had his muscly arms put, would people be crying that he's too sexy? I'm guessing not

Maybe it’s more that there’s something wrong with my arse 😂

TheJinxMinx · 09/07/2025 18:02

Thong bikini is totally inappropriate I think they are regardless of work situation or not its wrong around children etc. Id have worn a swimsuit as bikinis can ride up going down water slides etc or a well covered bikini it was a work event after all

BlueMum16 · 09/07/2025 18:02

A thong is not appropriate for work.

KateShugakIsALegend · 09/07/2025 18:05

Work event at a pool - the sheer horror
Full costume - fine
Bikini - OK
Thong - wild horses would have to be involved for me.

And god, yes the chafing!

lizzyBennet08 · 09/07/2025 18:12

Yea I'm with him.
totally wierd to wear a thong bikini to a work event

Seasonofthesticks · 09/07/2025 18:14

I’m guessing it wasn’t arranged by work but instead arranged by a group of colleagues who wanted to do something outside of work together? In a friendly way? In which case yeah wear what you like, you’re not exactly networking for work in a thong.

if you’ve got a nice body, why not flaunt it while you can! Your boyfriend sounds insecure about it maybe so possibly a chat to reassure him if this isn’t a regular thing with him.

Applesonthelawn · 09/07/2025 18:15

It's not really his business but I also think it's unprofessional and people who did see it will be drawing conclusions. Your risk, though, not his, and there's no rule against a husband trying to protect his wife from an unwise decision.

momtoboys · 09/07/2025 18:16

JadeHoliday · 09/07/2025 11:33

Yeah it was but I really don’t see the issue

I call BS. This is a wind up. No one can actually think it would be appropriate to wear a thong bikini to a work do. If they did, as an employer, I would question my employees judgement overall.

hellywelly3 · 09/07/2025 18:16

Yeah thong bikini to a work thing is a bit trashy.

momtoboys · 09/07/2025 18:18

JadeHoliday · 09/07/2025 11:56

It doesn’t need HR approval - in the past we’ve also done things such as bowling, escape room, ninja warrior type course. It was something different and really fun.

Did you wear your assless chaps to those events?

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 09/07/2025 11:35

It's your body and nothing to do with him but those thong bikinis are not something I'd ever want my colleagues to see me in! You do you though.

Or indeed see my colleagues in! Eww.

LlynTegid · 09/07/2025 18:26

Two wrongs don't make a right.

Thong bikini inappropriate, the response the OP got was bad. As for if it is a suitable work event, probably depends on who is in the work group. Women of some faiths would not take part in swimwear in a mixed environment.

RampantIvy · 09/07/2025 18:27

ModerateOrGoodOccasionallyPoor · 09/07/2025 17:17

If I search this user name am I going to find that this is the only thread the OP has posted on? I am aren't I? <sigh>

I do not believe that a company would use a water park/swimming pool for a team bonding day. It's not appropriate or very inclusive, for a start.

Surprise, surprise - there are no other posts from this poster.

I smell a rat.

ItsStillWork · 09/07/2025 12:03

I actually don’t believe this thread. No one would attend a work event in a thong bikini, I’m not buying it 🤔

But on the off chance this is a real scenario, the fact you did wear a thong bikini in front of work colleagues and you can’t see a problem with that shows that you have boundary issues.

Probably a pervy bloke. The hot weather always brings them out writing threads like this. 🤢

All mine do alongside swimming costumes which don't actually fit properly because of my shape.

I don't know if it's because I have a big bum and hips but the rest of me is quite small, a bigger size bottoms would gape at the front showing everything although they would likely still cover my bum.

Swimming costumes are a nightmare because I have a long torso and small boobs so I need the top half not to gape but the overall size to be big enough to actually go over my shoulders!
