Partner got really funny about swimwear I wore to work away day

We had a two day work ‘away trip’ last week where one of the bonding things was going to an indoor swimming complex with slides etc. Really fun!

When I got back from this, my partner said ‘you didn’t wear a bikini did you’- which I said I obviously did.

He thinks that’s disrespectful and I should have worn a swim suit ‘rather than have my arse out in front of colleagues’(!)

I told him he can’t control what I wear and he got the hump. He thinks I was trying to make myself attractive and impress colleagues..

Would you say I should have ‘covered up’ or is he being unreasonable

Mumsnet is just engagement farming threads mostly now.

Just out of interest, did having your bum in contact with the slides impede your downwards momentum at all?

I actually know the answer to this! As a child, my friends and I figured out that if we wedged our swimsuits up our bums we went much faster on the slides. (Then we rearranged it before getting out of the pool at the end of the slide)

BangersAndGnash · 09/07/2025 16:02

What kind of industry sends it employees on two day holidays including water parks as ‘bonding exercises’?

I wonder.

It was a swimming event, what is she meant to wear? A head to toe body sock?! I assume all the blokes had bare chests, have their managers flagged that?! The comments on this thread are so weird.

There is a lot of middle ground between a thong bikini and a head to toe swimming sock.

JustAnInchident · 09/07/2025 16:03

Ah I wanted to be on your side but a thong bikini to a work event, fun or not, is a no go for me. That being said, if I were you husband, I’d just cringe that you did it and that you seem to have little social awareness as to why this wouldn’t be a good idea and move on, i hardly think it’s reasonable to get jealous over.

A one piece, suitable for the occasion. I would not expect the men to wear a teeny pair of budgie smugglers or a Borat thong.

A thong bikini is a dreadful choice for a work thing.

I agree. I would change my vote to you are being unreasonable if I could.

Hothothothothothotlovingit · 09/07/2025 16:05

This reminds me of a trip to the Grand Canyon. I got stuck behind a woman wearing thong denim shorts! Never knew these were a thing til then. The last thing I needed was this woman’s butthole in my face trekking up the Grand Canyon😂. She had the figure for them but a butthole in your face is not a welcome site! Only perverts like looking at a butthole in a public place. You seem to know the audience you want to attract.

Thong bikinis in public leisure centres/pools is grim in front of kids too.

I actually don’t believe this thread. No one would attend a work event in a thong bikini, I’m not buying it 🤔

But on the off chance this is a real scenario, the fact you did wear a thong bikini in front of work colleagues and you can’t see a problem with that shows that you have boundary issues.

Come on, we don't know what the OP's job is. If she works as a lap dancer, it would be absolutely fine!

DisforDarkChocolate · 09/07/2025 16:06

I can't imagine any work context where I thought bare arse cheeks were appropriate.

I know what you mean but I'm not sure. A man should be able to wear a speedo to a swimming event. Maybe a swimming event in general isnt appropriate for colleagues to go to, if being almost-naked isnt acceptable?

Gothamcity · 09/07/2025 16:14

It's not just a bikini though, it's a thong bikini, so I can understand why he'd be a bit confused why you'd choose to show your colleagues your bare bum! My understanding for the only reason anyone would wear one, would be to minimise tan lines when sunbathing on a beach etc. It's obviously entirely up to you, and good on you for having the confidence to wear it in front of your colleagues! I think even my husband (who is the least jealous, controlling, husband on the planet) would probably ask me if "I was sure I wanted to wear that", if I said thats what I was wearing to a work thing, but if I was comfortable in it, his opinion wouldn't stop me.... I definitely wouldn't be comfortable in it though 😂

LondonPapa · 09/07/2025 16:16

JadeHoliday · 09/07/2025 11:33

Yeah it was but I really don’t see the issue

A thong bikini isn’t really appropriate at a work away day. A normal bikini, and swimsuit are fine but a thong bikini? Not at all IMO.

LadyWiddiothethird · 09/07/2025 16:17

A thong bikini at a work event!See a lot of them at the DL I belong to,they are revolting.

Do you work in the sex industry, sounds like it.

ThePoshUns · 09/07/2025 15:41

I can’t think of any professional who would want their colleagues to see them in their bikini. I also can’t think of any profession that would encourage their employees to partake in such an activity either. I’d love to know what you do for a living OP.

Me too. The amount of EDI training we have to do - we can barely breathe without being mindful of it not being taken the wrong way! Swimming pools and thongs are the antithesis to what we're taught!

Alltheyellowbirds · 09/07/2025 16:19

Dontlletmedownbruce · 09/07/2025 15:48

I can't imagine if the bum was a thong that there is much coverage elsewhere either. So I'm visualising tiny triangles on top and strings on the hips, low cut in the crotch. Even if it was was a regular bum bikini, if it was a tiny stringy bikini it was totally inappropriate. Designed to make men look lustily with the intention of making women jealous. A very pathetic signal to colleagues and one that can only cause loss of respect.

This. We’re all talking about the thong because that’s what OP mentioned, but I can’t imagine a bikini that has a thong bottom has much coverage on top either.

I used to work in a “fun” company where most of the staff were in their twenties and we had a lot of away trips, including to places with spas and jacuzzis. Everyone was always appropriately dressed in decently covering swimwear. I mean, you’ve got to go back to the office the day after, do you want to be sat in your next team meeting knowing they’ve all seen you nearly naked?

MonumentalError · 09/07/2025 16:19

Cracking thread..

ketamine · 09/07/2025 16:24

The most surprising thing among all of this is that an employer somehow thought it a good idea to arrange an activity requiring the team to wear swimwear. Seems thoughtless and inappropriate. Likely that some were dreading it and felt awfully exposed.

(Wear what you want though - good for you)

I do not believe that any EDI training you had said that the way people dress has anything to do with you. I expected said the opposite of that. Are you saying if you were in a swimming pool and you saw someone in a thong you would not be able to control yourself? This thread is nuts. It is up to the OP to decide what is appropriate to wear. If the OP wears a thong and makes a tit of herself, that's up to her. And it is never good for your partner to veto anything you wear.

Because it's a "fairly young office", friends, a lot of them have Instagram where it is normal to share pics of themselves in bikinis, it was a lot of fun, apparently.

The only one who evidently has an issue is the controlling husband, yet lots of people here are also happy to join him in trying to shame her.

FigTreeInEurope · 09/07/2025 16:31

Eww.. Barry from accounts definitely not furiously whacking off to what he's been oggling all day....

Topsyturvy78 · 09/07/2025 16:32

A thong bikini isn't suitable for an activity with work colleagues. How did you manage going down slide etc? I would be worried about it coming off in the rapids.😂😂😂

It would not have been very inclusive to,for example, Muslims who might not feel comfortable in a pool with members of the opposite sex.
