Partner got really funny about swimwear I wore to work away day

We had a two day work ‘away trip’ last week where one of the bonding things was going to an indoor swimming complex with slides etc. Really fun!

When I got back from this, my partner said ‘you didn’t wear a bikini did you’- which I said I obviously did.

He thinks that’s disrespectful and I should have worn a swim suit ‘rather than have my arse out in front of colleagues’(!)

I told him he can’t control what I wear and he got the hump. He thinks I was trying to make myself attractive and impress colleagues..

Would you say I should have ‘covered up’ or is he being unreasonable

Was it a thong bikini? Otherwise why would wearing a bikini mean you had your arse out? Or was he exaggerating?

Yeah it was but I really don’t see the issue

Why would your arse be more out in a swimsuit than a bikini? That makes no sense.

takealettermsjones · 09/07/2025 11:34

Missing the point but ...there wouldn't have been any significant difference in arse coverage between a bikini and a one piece, would there?

He's being weird. Albeit I couldn't think of anything worse than wearing a swimsuit in front of colleagues!

minipie · 09/07/2025 11:34

In general I’d say it’s none of his business

however if the bikini was one of those tee y weeny string triangle and thong ones I can kind of see his point

Icanttakethisanymore · 09/07/2025 11:34

Surely the only difference between a swimming costume and a bikini is that your stomach and back are visible? Either way tell him to piss off.

As an aside, how old are you? I can imagine lots of people would really baulk at the idea of jumping in the pool with their work colleagues!

Oh, well that does change things 😂

minipie · 09/07/2025 11:35

Oh cross posted

Yeah, bit weird to wear a thong bikini to a work event

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 09/07/2025 11:35

It's your body and nothing to do with him but those thong bikinis are not something I'd ever want my colleagues to see me in! You do you though.

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 09/07/2025 11:36

A thong bikini is a dreadful choice for a work thing.

FeministUnderTheCatriarchy · 09/07/2025 11:36

I wouldn't wear a thong bikini when with colleagues.

I have no interest in policing what other women wear, but I would personally wear a fuller coverage bikini or swimsuit at a work event.

Your DH is unreasonable though because something can be unprofessional without having the intent of attracting other men and the fact that that is his focus is telling.

RhaenysRocks · 09/07/2025 11:36

I do sot if agree that a thong back is not appropriate for a work event. I'd have gone for shorts / tanking type thing.

This isn't really his issue but I'd say it's maybe a 'what is appropriate work wear' issue.

MauraLabingi · 09/07/2025 11:37

Crikey OP. I wouldn't want my office colleagues seeing my bum cheeks in a thong either. That's just too far. I'd wear a non-indecent swimsuit or a tankini top with shorts.

But if YOU are happy sitting at work knowing that Jim, Dave and Darren are all thinking about your thong bikini, that's up to you. Nothing to do with your DH.

doodleschnoodle · 09/07/2025 11:37

Those thong bikinis are a bit much for a work trip I would have said, no way would I be wearing one of those with colleagues, but a standard bikini bottom isn’t any more revealing than a swimsuit bottom.

Well then the OP should have included the thong detail given that is presumably his issue? Rather than the fact that a bit more of your midriff is showing (which is the inherent difference between a bikini and a swimming costume given either could have a thong).

We are a fairly young office, most of us are in our 30’s. At least I like to think we are young 😂

He said he’d have had an issue even if I was in a normal bikini

Fair enough - good on you all for getting stuck in!

Oreosareawful · 09/07/2025 11:39

a thong bikini is not suitable at all and I can understand your husband's issue.

FiveShelties · 09/07/2025 11:39

Excellent thread OP. 10/10😂

ahhhhh, well that's odd. Either way, I wouldn't have someone telling me what to wear. He gets to choose what he wears, you get to choose what you wear. If he doesn't like what you wear he can go and find someone else who dresses more to his taste.

Kittyfur · 09/07/2025 11:40

It’s very unprofessional!
I completely understand your husband!

To be fair a work trip to a waterpark is not a professional environment.

sophistitroll · 09/07/2025 11:41

It’s none of his business but I can’t envisage why anyone would wear a thong bikini to a work event. It’s a bit like you probably wouldn’t wear a bandeau belly top to work, well I wouldn’t
