Do you think smoking weed every night is cause for concern?

I didn't but since working in a job where we work closely with SS, I'm seeing it raised as a potential issue of children are present in the house.

For a bit of background, we have two kids 7 and 12. I don't smoke it anymore but my husband never really grew out of it!

He makes sure he hides it from the kids but the youngest has noticed that he smells of 'smokers' as our 7 yr old calls cigs, when he comes in.

I think the 12 yr old knows but doesn't care.

He works full time and rarely smokes in the day .

AIBU to think it's not so different from having a few beers in the evening (tbf he has those too)?

Smoking weed is gross, the smell , everything. I wouldn’t want anyone doing that near my kids.

cornflourblue · 30/06/2025 17:48

Having seen first hand the mental health crises of several friends as a direct result of long term weed smoking, I would say YABU to not see the seriousness of doing so, and around your DC.

Hatty65 · 30/06/2025 17:48

I think it's a cause for concern. Yes.

I'd also think it cause for concern if he drank every night.

I'm also bothered by the fact that he's basically ensured that your 12 yo thinks weed smoking is normal and not a big deal. How do you feel about him smoking weed through his teens? It's not good for teens MH or developing brains.

MelonElla · 30/06/2025 17:49

Yes, off course it's a cause for concern around children. Why would you think it isn't?

Tiswa · 30/06/2025 17:50

Yes it is a concern and yes it isn’t that different from having a few beers every night but that would also be a concern for me

a man who needs to smoke and have a few beers every night is a real concern

and you can’t hide the smell at all. Our NDN son smokes and you can tell in the garden and outside our house. DD had a friend whose Dad work in Amsterdam so they often visited and I remember her saying as she walked down our drive (bare in mind he smoked out the window in the back garden) this smells like Amsterdam

all yiur neighbours know as well

heldinadream · 30/06/2025 17:50

Weed AND beer every evening? That's dependency and he's self-medicating to cover up deeper issues. So yes, it's a cause for concern.
How do you feel about it @LastPodcastOnTheLeft ?

purplecorkheart · 30/06/2025 17:50

I could not be in a relationship with a person like your dh. I know someone who developed psychosis from smoking weed. She eventually lost custody of her children to her ex.

To be honest I am not sure if I could be with a smoker anyway. My Dad smoked when I was growing up and I hate the smell that clings

Stripeyanddotty · 30/06/2025 17:51

Of course it’s a cause for concern- on several levels.

CheshireDing · 30/06/2025 17:51

Is this real ?

I cannot understand why you would think that's ok. Weed is gross, even more gross is still doing it as grown adults who should no better and as parents.

LastPodcastOnTheLeft · 30/06/2025 17:51

@Hatty65 he doesn't smoke Infront of them and shuts the kitchen door when he's skinning up. He really doesn't want them to knowand nor do I.

Helpmeplease2025 · 30/06/2025 17:52

the smell alone is disgusting. Teens shouldn’t be growing up with this. DNiece had terrible MH due to overuse in her teens, to the point she tried to take her own life.

Stripeyanddotty · 30/06/2025 17:52

You’re absolute fools if you think that they don’t know.

KateMiskin · 30/06/2025 17:52

Yes. Smoking it at all would be a dealbreaker for me.

Helpmeplease2025 · 30/06/2025 17:52

The kitchen door does not shut the smell out, not even close. Only smokers think this.

Meadowfinch · 30/06/2025 17:52

The evidence of psychological damage from long term pot use is mounting. Paranoia, anxiety, even schizophrenia. Why do you think we have a mental health crisis?

I wouldn't want him in the house or within a country mile of my child, but I'm not married to him.

You're stuck with it because he won't give it up now.

Ambergrasswashingbasket800 · 30/06/2025 17:53

Is he smoking in the house?

SunnySideDeepDown · 30/06/2025 17:54

I think your husband is setting a poor example for the kids.

Do you want them to be dependent on drugs? Do you know that cannabis is bad for mental health and can trigger psychosis?

LastPodcastOnTheLeft · 30/06/2025 17:54

@heldinadream I don't want my son's to copy him but pretty much every teen will try it at some point. They just think it's fags at the moment which I make an exaggerated show of saying isn't that gross to the younger one.

I don't mind him smoking it as long as it's in the garden and not in front of the kids.

OP posts:
Choppedcoriander · 30/06/2025 17:54

Yes, definitely a cause for concern if it’s every night.

LastPodcastOnTheLeft · 30/06/2025 17:55

Absolutely never in the house.

This! The whole road will be able to smell it, as will your kids. It’s so inappropriate!

TomatoSandwiches · 30/06/2025 17:55

I find it unacceptable, my family are predisposed to addictions and seeing the long term effects.... it most certainly.isnt a harmless plant.

heroinechic · 30/06/2025 17:55

You’ll get eaten alive on here but no I don’t think it’s cause for concern as long as it is kept locked away from the kids and it isn’t smoked around them.

cannotbetooarsed · 30/06/2025 17:55

Absolutely agree with the MH issues and the effect on other people’s lives ! My darling Mum died 10 years ago aged 83 estranged from her beloved son ( my brother) ,she was absolutely heartbroken. His behaviour towards her over the years, the accusations and paranoia he had towards her were insufferable.
He had smoked weed all his life and pissed off to India aged 40 and only appeared when she died…obviously sniffing out his inheritance ! It didn’t happen!!!

KateMiskin · 30/06/2025 17:56

All teens do not try weed. Thats just something teens tell their parents.
