To be oblivious to the issue people have with JKR? I thought she was a feminist. What have I missed?

People have warned me not to state the view above as ‘it’s more complicated’

It isn’t complicated but people would like it to be so they can berate her
she stands for women’s rights so of course some people believe this makes her a bigot

Shedmistress · 15/06/2025 14:07

Anyone telling you this needs to be ignored.

FlightCommanderPRJohnson · 15/06/2025 14:09

The Feminism 'sex and gender' board here has lots of discussion on this topic - if you browse a few threads it should put you in the picture.

SnakesAndArrows · 15/06/2025 14:10

Her feminism centres female people, and involves donating jaw-dropping sums of money to support female people.

Apparently this is offensive.

TimeForTeaAndToast · 15/06/2025 14:10

Is this what's known as plopping? Just do some reading on the sex and gender threads.

ExtraOnions · 15/06/2025 14:11

What it boils down to is that JKRs standpoint is that you can’t change biological sex, and that single sex rights (based on this biology) should be protected. GRAs think that Gender is more important than Biology, and that you should be able to function within the Gender you choose

Add in name calling, doxing, rape & murder threats … and that’s about it

Waitingfordoggo · 15/06/2025 14:13

JKR stands up for women’s rights, including the right to have single sex spaces in situations where we may be vulnerable. This is because history has shown us numerous times that a proportion of men are dangerous. According to some people, this means JKR is transphobic, which is absolute bollocks.

greencartbluecart · 15/06/2025 14:14

Yes she is a feminist
that’s why she is interested in women’s rights and children’s health abs well being
where women has the buological And legal meaning
add to that she is rich and successful and a generally nice person and of course it’s fashionable to hate her - oh and she’s not young and doesn’t dress to titalat
edit to add that she doesn’t exactly totally fit the gender norm box yet doesn’t see herself as transgender as a result, doesn’t think there is anything wrong with her

Mumofteenandtween · 15/06/2025 14:15

Basically she is rather clever, incredibly rich, extremely witty and values courage above all other personal qualities and so refuses to be cowed. Quite a lot of people - particularly men - find those qualities - particularly in a woman - rather upsetting.

VickyEadieofThigh · 15/06/2025 14:17

A lot of people have simply accepted the option that JKR is "transphobic" (I've recently seen suggestions she's also "homophobic", which - as I'm a gay woman - I find hilarious) without any actuproof.

My American friend said she was "transphobic" and when I asked for examples, she admitted that she'd simply been told this by other friends.

Snorlaxo · 15/06/2025 14:18

Some people see the centring of womens needs as a threat because they think that everything should revolve around men and their dicks.

Stompythedinosaur · 15/06/2025 14:19

Feminism is not one single thing. There are different views within feminism.

Surely you haven't missed her conflict with the transgender community?

JKR is a trans-exclusionary feminist, I'm a trans-exclusionary feminist. There isn't just one set of beliefs, people disagree.

Pleasealexa · 15/06/2025 14:19

Someone I know who was a JKR hater hadn't even read the twitter post that caused the initial fury. They had just heard they should be outraged so were.

It's just fashionable to hate her...shows you are "kind" and "protective of vulnerable" trans. Interestingly many people actually support her views, i.e protect women's spaces, don't allow men in women's but assume she has been hostile, which isn't the case at all.

Pollqueen · 15/06/2025 14:21

She's also an evil holocaust denier for not recognising the terrible time the Trans had during the holocaust. She also fails to appreciate that the nazis came after the Trans long before they turned their attention to Jews

Waitwhat23 · 15/06/2025 14:22

She's funded the University of Edinburgh to be world leaders in research into MS which affects Scotland and women in particular disproportionately -

'In Scotland, Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is more prevalent in women than men, with a national female-to-male ratio of 2.3:1. Scotland also has one of the highest rates of MS diagnoses in the world'

https://clinical-brain-sciences.ed.ac.uk/news-archive-2014-2021/news-jul-dec-2019/jk-rowling-donates-further-ps15m-multiple-sclerosis

Funds the only single sex rape crisis service in Edinburgh and the Lothians (totally. Down to the teabags)

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-63943766.amp

Helped to fund a rescue mission to get women lawyers out of Afghanistan -

https://www.sundaypost.com/fp/harry-potter-author-jk-rowling-helped-afghan-lawyers-flee-the-taliban/

Has set up a legal fund to help women facing discrimination by their employers and services which fail to provide single sex services as stated in the EQA2010 and which was clarified as should have been the case since 2010 as was clarified in the Supreme Court judgement -

https://www.thenational.scot/news/25190054.jk-rowling-fund-gender-critical-womens-cases-employers/

And she does loads of other stuff too. This is just off the top of my head.

But because she won't cede women's rights to men's demands, she's seen as the devil.

And she's rich enough not to be cancelled which really pisses off the women hating misogynists.

J.K. Rowling donates further £15m to multiple sclerosis research

Sep 2019: The author J.K. Rowling has donated £15.3m to the University of Edinburgh to help improve the lives of people with multiple sclerosis (MS) and similar conditions. The investment – which is inclusive of Gift Aid – will help create new faciliti...

PractisingMyTelekenipsis · 15/06/2025 14:25

All of the above plus she is a terrible writer because she didn't invent the entire British school system (yes really. I've seen loads of threads by people who thought she invented the house and prefect system and were annoyed that she didn't)

She's racist because the wizarding world has a class system (pure vs mudblood, depite that also being based on real life)

She didn't write original material because other authors hadn't written about magic schools and good vs evil.

Basically she's a successful, intelligent woman and people hate that.

Personally I'd sell my kids to meet her! Well I'd consider it at least !

laughingnow · 15/06/2025 14:26

So, an entirely wholesome individual really, as I thought.

Not to mention brave, insightful, compassionate, practical, principled, generous and witty. And can write a cracking yarn.

If the world had more people like her it would be a much better place.

F1rstDoNoHarm · 15/06/2025 14:30

Warren Smith talks to a student about this here, as an exercise in critical thinking:

FOJN · 15/06/2025 14:32

Apparently believing in biological sex and single sex spaces is transphobic. Talking about personal experiences which inform this view is "weaponising trauma" and also transphobic.

AND the woman had the audacity to write the case for her own prosecution. Feel free to read and make up your own mind.

TheNightingalesStarling · 15/06/2025 14:33

The latest thing is she is "racist" because some fans did not like the role of Snape being cast to a Black man. There doesnt seem to be any actual evidence of this .

Vaxtable · 15/06/2025 14:33

There is only an issue to some people because they don’t like her thoughts on the fact that women should be protected and be entitled to protected places, supported by and employing women only hence her spending a lot of her money providing this

Those who dislike her, in my opinion, are normally the women’s who feel it’s acceptable that women should be put in their place and allow men to do whatever they want

laughingnow · 15/06/2025 14:40

So is it mainly men who have taken such umbrage at her? Or the vanishingly small number of trans people? It can’t be women, surely.
