To be oblivious to the issue people have with JKR? I thought she was a feminist. What have I missed?

People have warned me not to state the view above as ‘it’s more complicated’

Apparently believing in biological sex and single sex spaces is transphobic. Talking about personal experiences which inform this view is "weaponising trauma" and also transphobic.

AND the woman had the audacity to write the case for her own prosecution. Feel free to read and make up your own mind.

Following on from her essay, she also contributed to the book 'The Women Who Wouldn't Wheesht' which details the pushback by women in Scotland against the erosion of women's rights by an institutionally captured Government and national organisations.

Some people (many?) disagree with her stance on trans rights but you could have discovered that with a 10 second Google.

laughingnow · 15/06/2025 14:58

Thanks very much. JKR’s article was very informative and interesting and I have that book, The Women Who Wouldn’t Wheesht on my to read pile. I don’t bother with Twitter as may be apparent.

She's a great supporter of women's rights. It was probably a misogynist who you were speaking to.

CremeEggThief · 15/06/2025 15:00

I think YABU if you have only recently become aware of this, to be completely honest. Have you really heard nothing about it over the last few years??

JHound · 15/06/2025 15:01

laughingnow · 15/06/2025 14:40

So is it mainly men who have taken such umbrage at her? Or the vanishingly small number of trans people? It can’t be women, surely.

Lots of women too. Women are not a monolith and views on trans rights vary among women too.

There is no way these are genuine questions on your part.

laughingnow · 15/06/2025 15:02

Kind of why I put my query out here, to a variety of women. Google/AI aren’t as interesting

She's also an evil holocaust denier for not recognising the terrible time the Trans had during the holocaust. She also fails to appreciate that the nazis came after the Trans long before they turned their attention to Jews

Is this satire? 🧐

laughingnow · 15/06/2025 15:04

Surely

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 15/06/2025 15:04

She's the kind of feminist who doesn't prioritise the wishes of male people.

Which is the wrong only kind of feminist.

IShouldNotCoco · 15/06/2025 15:05

Thanks. I do often have to check because I’m autistic !

One would hope so, but it's hard to tell these days.

Her only stance on trans rights is that they don't trump women's rights.

It is genuinely surprising how many people disagree with that.

Doesn’t surprise me in the slightest as I see people have different views on whether TW are women.

If everybody agreed TW are not women and yet still objected to JKR that would surprise me.

What a fucking bitch, how dare she acknowledge the reality of sex.

Stompythedinosaur · 15/06/2025 14:19

Feminism is not one single thing. There are different views within feminism.

Surely you haven't missed her conflict with the transgender community?

JKR is a trans-exclusionary feminist, I'm a trans-exclusionary feminist. There isn't just one set of beliefs, people disagree.

I would disagree with this. She does not exclude trans men from feminism. She focuses on women, and excludes trans identifying men.

The hate seems to be mostly keyboard warriors, and dare I say it, people who don't have much going on in their own lives. I only experienced it once as I'm not on social media or twitter etc. Ds goes to a hobby club, mostly quiet tech types and the classes are run by young men, helpful lads but not so strong on social skills. One day DS turns up in a Harry Potter T shirt and was told by a leader that he shouldn't support HP, when he asked why he was told JK is basically a bad person and homophobic. I said i had never heard this, I heard some people disagree with her views on certain things but the 'homophobic' angle was news to me. I knew damn well where this was going as I'd read her essay and some articles on it. These guys all started shouting the most awful things, one guy who had never spoken or indicated that he even had a personality was in DSs face talking so passionately about his hate for her. This went on a while, like they were bonding over their views. I don't think any of them read her essay and what they were saying sounded like a total misinterpretation, it was eye opening. I chatted with DS afterwards but the whole incident kind of scared me. How many more people out there are like this?

Fwiw I make a point of never watching anything with Emma Watson or Danielle Radcliffe anymore and have zero respect for them.

OK, let me rephrase for the benefit of people who think a woman is anyone who says they are a woman.

I am surprised that so many think that the wants of the absolutely minuscule number of women who have a penis trump the needs of the huge number of women who need penis-free toilets, changing rooms, rape crisis services and sports.

JHound · 15/06/2025 15:14

To be fair, it’s hard to see why people would have an issue with calling her a feminist. They might disagree with her on certain subjects, but that shouldn’t amount to ‘having an issue’ with her or denying her feminist credentials.

Any more than women I disagree with about anything are ‘not feminists’. I find it hard to imagine feminists approving of sex work. I can’t deny some feminists do. Some feminists think it’s empowering for women to crawl in front of a man. I don’t. I don’t get to claim they aren’t feminists though.

The wholescale demonisation of women fighting against the erosion of women's rights has given women haters a very handy, socially acceptable way to express their hatred of women openly. Often accompanied with threats - the multiple 'the only good terf is a dead terf' signs being openly displayed at public demonstrations in the last couple of months being only the most recent examples. It's a misogynist's wet dream.

And they hate JKR in particular because they can't make her shut up.

I did not see that in OPs post. She hasn’t asked why people say JKR isn’t a feminist - just why do some people have an issue with her.

Yep, she's one of the few women in the world who is completely uncancellable.

It's a potent combination of extreme wealth (so they can't threaten her livelihood), a previously unimpeachable record of supporting progressive politics (so only absolute imbeciles actually believe the attempts to smear her as "far right"), the ability to express herself with absolute clarity, and total fearlessness.

So many women have dipped a toe in the water saying, "Hmm, I'm not sure I quite agree with all of this" (for example, Margaret Atwood, Dawn French, arguably even Simone Biles) and moderated their words as a result of the backlash.

But JKR just doesn't negotiate with terrorists. She's like, "I realise you are upset, but I did mean what I said and I'm not going to apologise for it. And I don't need to educate myself, I already have which is why I believe what I do."

And the misogynists HATE it. She's the one woman they can't bully into submission.

laughingnow · 15/06/2025 15:35

Well, she laudably uses her platform in a potentially extremely positive way - not instigating a pile on, more expressing her well thought out opinions. No one, surely, thinks she is not a supporter of women’s rights. I was questioning the controversy she seems to attract. But then, as I said, I don’t look at Twitter etc so have spoken in person to people (call me old fashioned) some of whom warned me off stirring up debate. As if.

She is a feminist.
She stands for women.
She doesn't stand for men choosing to call themselves women.
