To be oblivious to the issue people have with JKR? I thought she was a feminist. What have I missed?

People have warned me not to state the view above as ‘it’s more complicated’

I think she stands up for women’s rights and I broadly agree with her position on these issues. That said, I think she’s deeply unpleasant about it all.

How so?

Denimrules · 15/06/2025 22:22

It's saying 'feminist' some women - and men - have a problem with because it's just one branch of feminism and maybe not JHKs overriding message.

Saying this purely as an observation

She's the witch they can't burn and it makes them really mad.

This. She believed in biological sex and said so at a time that other women were losing their reputations and livelihoods for doing so. They came after her viciously, she doubled down and gave as good as she got. Now she gets opprobrium for daring to not say it all nicely enough amongst the rabid death threats.

It's the branch of feminism which is actually about women.

Jk is a living saint as far as I’m concerned. I read her essay when all the hate for her started and have followed her on twitter/x. She can be a bit blunt, but she’s not offensive. And why should being blunt as a woman be such a bad thing?

as others have said she’s a powerful women and male activists hate that. The witch they can’t burn.

i suggest you read her essay op. And read a few posts on the sex and gender board on here.

HeyThereDelila · 15/06/2025 22:58

She’s brilliant and I love her. It’s not remotely complicated.

WallaceinAnderland · 16/06/2025 01:49

Honestly? This picture sums up why people have issues with JKR

can't any of you educate a poster without resorting to bitchy - bitchy?

They cannot, no.

UltraProcessedLifeGoals · 16/06/2025 02:51

And whilst we are on the topic of JK : Although I agree with her views on this topic, I absolutely can't stand the woman.

myplace · 15/06/2025 15:15

I would disagree with this. She does not exclude trans men from feminism. She focuses on women, and excludes trans identifying men.

Not even that. She excludes trans-identifying men from the category of women. She doesn’t seek to exclude them from society or trauma services or from employment rights or anything else. Just not as women.

GenderRealistBloke · 16/06/2025 04:09

BilderbergPoop · 15/06/2025 22:13

Interesting. I see her as someone who said everything exactly right, in a measured and compassionate essay, and whose first tweet was about the right not to lose employment for believing sex is immutable and important.

She was pilloried and traduced, often by people who hadn’t read what she wrote, and in the manner, literally, of a witch hunt.

Since then she’s become blunter, but that’s not why she was controversial. I think refusing to keep hedging and throat-clearing has made her more effective. There’s no nuance from her attackers after all.

Where's the bitchy bitchy and why is it our job to educate people on a woman who has a very public presence especially when it comes to her views on women's rights?

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 16/06/2025 06:05

It’s not complicated at all. The thought police want men to go into women’s spaces, win women’s races and live in women’s prisons. Anyone who doesn’t agree with this is not being correct and needs to be cancelled, educated and lose their job. Unlike most women who are too poor to object, JK Rowling has money, power and global reach. She is questioning the thought police and the thought police are vitriolic in their response to her.

Can you post me having an issue with people saying “trans women are men”.

Screenshot or link. Thanks.

Or should we cut straight to you acknowledging
you made it up?

so You agree. Transwomen are men? Or do you have an issue with that?

It’s a forum where people ask questions and no one is forced to answer. Why would you come on it if you don’t want to answer the question and educate the person, but still want to contribute in a negative way? What’s the point of a response?

And I asked 2 questions so it seems I am fulfilling the point of the forum.
The comment I quoted was not a question was it? It was a claim that posters were being bitchy & should be educating others.

So where is the bitchy bitchy & why is it MN members responsibility to educate others on a person with an honest & huge public presence?

Ok so OP can’t ask the question then and should just google, as can be the answer to a lot of threads started on mumsnet.

Where did I say the OP couldn't ask questions?

I quoted a different poster and questioned their claim that there were people being bitchy bitchy and that contributors should educate others. I do not see anything bitchy and it appears that many have provided information relating to JKR & her views on WR. Am I not allowed to ask questions?

scalt · 16/06/2025 07:31

Those saying “it’s complicated” might be mocking Harry saying that to Griphook in the final film; and Griphook repeats this line back to Harry. (I don’t know if JK wrote the screenplay of the final film.) Also, many of the haters probably haven’t seen the films, or even read the books.

I laughed at reafing that the haters hate her because she didn’t invent the concept of houses. A magic school is also not her invention - Jill Murphy’s “The Worst Witch” is old enough to be Harry’s mother, she pre-dates him by a quarter of a century.

scalt · 16/06/2025 07:40

JHound · 15/06/2025 14:57

Some people (many?) disagree with her stance on trans rights but you could have discovered that with a 10 second Google.

This mumsnet chestnut again: “the OP could just google it!”

Here is why people don’t want to google:
Google replies are likely to be AI generated, and probably more biased towards the status quo, which is (to many people) that JK is evil. If the boss of google believes that (I don’t know if it’s true), then the replies will probably reflect that.

Asking on mumsnet brings (I hope) mostly real replies from real people.

And they hate JKR in particular because they can't make her shut up.

It really is that simple isn't it.

We don't need awareness days. We need people to stop bringing their whole selves to work and the gym and the pub and God knows where else.

So as I said: just an old man shaking his fist at the clouds.

It’s so not comparable.

Has anyone, as an adult, faced discrimination for ‘not’ having sexual feelings towards other adults, like people have for being same sex attracted?

Lots of things are not relevant to lots of people. Mature Adults learn to ignore that which is not relevant to them and let others to whom it is relevant engage with it.

I wish those who regularly wade onto threads discussing JKR/women’s rights/men who say they are women going into spaces they shouldn’t, with ‘it doesn’t bother me! You’re all anti-trans’ and the like would apply this. And hide the ‘trans’ threads like they said they would.
