To be oblivious to the issue people have with JKR? I thought she was a feminist. What have I missed?

People have warned me not to state the view above as ‘it’s more complicated’

What it boils down to is that JKRs standpoint is that you can’t change biological sex, and that single sex rights (based on this biology) should be protected. GRAs think that Gender is more important than Biology, and that you should be able to function within the Gender you choose

Add in name calling, doxing, rape & murder threats … and that’s about it

Nutshell.

Well, she laudably uses her platform in a potentially extremely positive way - not instigating a pile on, more expressing her well thought out opinions. No one, surely, thinks she is not a supporter of women’s rights. I was questioning the controversy she seems to attract. But then, as I said, I don’t look at Twitter etc so have spoken in person to people (call me old fashioned) some of whom warned me off stirring up debate. As if.

Well some people say you're not a supporter of women's rights if you don't support ALL women's rights, including trans women's.

And she's like, "No, mate, trans women are in fact men."

laughingnow · 15/06/2025 15:38

Those people must be the hard of thinking!

OP posts:
laughingnow · 15/06/2025 15:42

I don’t think I was missing that much then. I definitely don’t put trans women in the woman category. I couldn’t really believe that was the issue.

Some people (many?) disagree with her stance on trans rights

That's odd because JKR supports trans rights.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 15/06/2025 16:05

@Waitwhat23 that's so true.

What really troubled me was some of these young men in the group I described earlier are neurodiverse and quite vulnerable, as is my DS. I just couldn't believe how animated and angry they were. One guy had never spoken or made eye contact before but lit up like a candle when this topic came up. They are being swayed by bullies online and forming world views with little experience of the world themselves. At some point will they eventually become misogynists for real? Because right now they are just vulnerable young men struggling to find a place in.a world that doesn't feel like it fits.

I sometimes wish the Internet was never invented (as she posts online.. irony acknowledged).

No I don't. This is the problem. People saying that she's anti trans when she isn't. Even if you don't believe it, you perpetuate the myth by repeating it.

ChaToilLeam · 15/06/2025 16:15

She's an absolute queen for all she has done for women. An absolute feminist icon. Yet misrepresented and demonised by the "be kind" brigade, which tells you all you need to know about them.

Ok.

(also I noticed how

“people disagree with her stance on trans rights”

subtly became

“people say she is anti-trans”….)

laughingnow · 15/06/2025 14:40

So is it mainly men who have taken such umbrage at her? Or the vanishingly small number of trans people? It can’t be women, surely.

The usual phrase is:

"men and the women who enable them"

I’ll be honest, most of us started out like that. “But that’s just common sense and blatantly obvious! There must be something more going on…”

There wasn’t. (And believe me, I looked)

It was the failure to fully capitulate the category of Women to include transwomen in every single situation. Which is clearly madness.

I consider myself pretty gender-critical but jKR is increasingly coming off as off-puttingly obsessive and mean on social media.

Hear hear. She's one of many, who has been bullied and threatened by the kind, tolerant progressives.

How do you think she should deal with the constant death threats and general abuse she gets? In what way is she ‘mean’?

Meh.

She put her very rational and mainstream views across in her measured essay and received 'enough death threats to paper her house'.

I imagine, like many of us who keep being told 'well, there's obviously a problem, but you're not being nice enough about it', that she no longer gives any fucks.

It doesn't matter how sweetly and kindly women say the no. Angry entitled men are angry because it's a no.

As Berns said 'I'd rather be rude than a fucking liar'.

Waitwhat23 · 15/06/2025 17:22

Also, there's currently angry entitled men attacking a bunny rescue for following the 'wrong' twitter accounts and a man jailed for 15 months for handcuffing a man to a radiator and beating him is going after JKR, but it's her who's obsessive and mean.

Hibernatingtilspring · 15/06/2025 17:32

JKR has made life very difficult for women who present as more masculine, whether she intended to or not. She doesn't care about throwing some women under a bus, so I think she's a poor feminist for that reason.
I'm aware that's not a popular view on Mumsnet.
She's shown some pretty abhorrent bullying tactics on social media too, which in my view ruins any credibility she claims to have about standing up for minority people. You don't criticise others and copy their tactics at the same time.

How? JKR doesn't make the law. Parliament did.

Anyway, you do realise that most of the stories about "cis" women with short hair being challenged in women's toilets since the Supreme Court judgment are a crock of shite, right?

WhereIsMyJumper · 15/06/2025 17:41

Most people who accuse her of being transphobic haven’t even bothered to read her well-worded essay about women’s rights on her website. Read it and decide for yourself.

Hibernatingtilspring · 15/06/2025 17:43

@MissScarletInTheBallroom I don't understand why you're bringing up the law, that isn't relevant to the point I made?
JKR has helped perpetuate a culture where bullying of women who look more masc or non binary is acceptable. Things have gone backwards in that regard. This is happening to my friends. I don't rely on Mumsnet for my news stories, baffling why you think I would.
I also have a trans masc friend who is really struggling at the moment with not feeling welcome anywhere (according to JKR they should be in women's spaces, my friend does not feel comfortable doing that at all)

JHound · 15/06/2025 16:06

You know very well what I mean.

I'm not sure I do.

Do you mean she wouldn't shut up and roll over for men's rights activists?
Did she have the temerity to hold an opinion on an issue which affects women?

If you think supporting women's rights must mean you hate trans people you are a misogynist.

Waitwhat23 · 15/06/2025 17:48

Ooh, ooh, let's have a game of - Bullying tactics on social media - JKR or TRA?

Threatening to kidnap people in a van

Threatening a bunny rescue

Policing other people's follows

Doxxing people's addresses.

Organising shit and piss protests

Laughing at the idea of dancing on the grave of a young woman who died tragically young

Posting pictures of porn on a twitter thread on which children were posting drawings during one of the lock downs.

5 minutes folks and then pencils down!

(I'll give you a wee hint. It's all TRA)

JKR's biggest crimes seems to be having a glass of champagne and a cigar on a yacht and not allowing people to defame her.

Don’t forget defacing a suffragette statue. I’m fairly certain that wasn’t JKR
