How often do you wash your towels?

Random post but I keep seeing it pop up in articles about how you only need to wash your towels once a week, I wash mine after each use, is this not normal?

OP posts:

Every couple of uses unless visibly dirty. We’re a big gym/swim house and have loads of identical white towels, so it gets pretty confusing. I help myself to a fresh towel whenever I fancy. My favourite thing is a towel fresh from the dryer.

WimbyAce · 12/06/2025 18:43

Once a fortnight. Tea towels and downstairs hand towel is changed weekly. Obvs if they looked dirty they would get changed.

Lulu1919 · 12/06/2025 18:44

I use a bath sheet three times and change it
Hair towel daily

Venturaventura · 12/06/2025 18:46

After every use.

yeesh · 12/06/2025 18:46

Bath towels after every use, hand towels every day.

FalseSpring · 12/06/2025 18:48

Once a week for bath towels, hand towels and tea towels maybe twice a week.

My19thNervousNameChange · 12/06/2025 18:49

Ah this old chestnut again. So tiresome. Clearly some people have too much time and/or money to waste on electricity, detergent etc. Unless you are actually showering in shitwater or soaping yourself with manure you really don't need to wash your towels every time they're used. What are you scared of?

lazyarse123 · 12/06/2025 18:49

When I think about it. I sometimes put the towels in the dryer instead of washing if they haven't dried properly in the bathroom.
Only two of us now so just chuck kitchen towels and tea towels in with the undies (I know it's shocking) I'm not doing multiple loads when there's not much.

Omg 2-3 times a week 😳😳😳😳

mine are lucky if they get done 2-3 times a month

I was going to say the same… 😆 maybe every 2 weeks…. they are definitely the thing that gets forgotten about in our house

Pippinsdiary · 12/06/2025 18:50

yeesh · 12/06/2025 18:46

Bath towels after every use, hand towels every day.

Oh stop

Strictlymad · 12/06/2025 18:50

About 4 uses- it’s only water and a clean body if you’ve washed properly!

Anotheronelikeit · 12/06/2025 18:52

I genuinely used to do mine after every use. Always had a clean towel every bath/shower as a kid as well, my poor DM! I didn't know you shouldn't do them every use!

Then my electric started getting expensive, and with such a large family I couldn't keep up with washing so now it's every 3 uses.

TourangaLeila · 12/06/2025 18:52

I don't wash, I incinerate. New delivery daily from amazon.

SheGotOffThePlane · 12/06/2025 18:54

Hand towels changed every morning. Bath towels after every second use.

DramaAlpaca · 12/06/2025 18:54

Roughly once a week.

HalloweenGrinch · 12/06/2025 18:55

Ypu have heard of the Hygiene Hypothesis right?

I wash my bath/shower towels when they seem dirty. This might be once on a month, may rarely be more frequent (kitchen towels and shared hand towels definitely more like weekly). It seems like a criminal waste of energy, detergent and water to do this more often. And my and my family's immune systems are flipping strong!

Having said which, am currently through-hiking for a fortnight. Washing anything properly is not on the cards.

mybrainpills · 12/06/2025 18:56

I live alone and wash my towels after every use.

Aliflowers · 12/06/2025 18:56

Hand towels I change daily in all the loos because they’re used by multiple people and as much as I’d love to think my younger children are as fastidious as me in handwashing they probably aren’t!

Bath towels probably after 2/3 uses for me and the kids. DH gets a clean towel every day but he also shaves most days which means it’s sodden by the time he’s done

abnerbrownsdressinggown · 12/06/2025 18:57

Once a week here - the hand towels in the kitchen gets chucked in when I do an appropriate wash.

I have no idea how people wash a towel after each use - we’d be doing two towel washes a day on top of other washing if we did that.

OP - do you change a towel every time you dry your hands?

I don't have a strict rota as I do it when it's good drying weather outside (all year around preferably. But if it's a longer stretch of rain I'll do them on a day when I'm not doing clothes). And put them on the inside airer (I don't have, or want, a drier)

id say it averages every 3/4 days, not more than a week, but not after every shower either.

my washing line is convenient, so I'll often put then in the line after a shower & always hang them up to dry.

They really don't need to be washed each time, honest.

Oh I love my washing line but towels are SO GOOD after a tumble dry. All soft and fluffy.

Flightsoffancy · 12/06/2025 19:00

Once every two weeks and the same (usually) for bedding. So alternate weekend washes. Makes sense for the planet, our bank account and my sanity.

Edited

There's three of us and I still do this. Else I'd have to wait ages for a full load of socks/pants and we'd have to have loads 🤣

JohnsShirt · 12/06/2025 18:17

Every ten minutes.

Why not more often?

Honestly, low standards!

suburburban · 12/06/2025 19:05

Weekly, we use separate towels

Flashahah · 12/06/2025 19:05

yeesh · 12/06/2025 18:46

Bath towels after every use, hand towels every day.

Why not hand towels after every use?
