How often do you wash your towels?

Random post but I keep seeing it pop up in articles about how you only need to wash your towels once a week, I wash mine after each use, is this not normal?

Every couple of weeks usually - but it's up to the individual to put it in the dirty washing basket. We all have our own towels though and don't share.

Plus all the energy usage... are people also using driers to launder multiple towels every day/week?!?

Yes I really don’t understand this

suburburban · 12/06/2025 20:24

Plus the towels must fade and become shabbier quicker. I don’t replace mine for years’ either

But why? Presumably all these towels dry clean things.

When I was doing a level biology we did a thing where we would swab an item and grow whatever we could on a petri dish. I remember the hand towel was grim 🤢 towels can easily contain bacteria and I have a thing about germs som for me this feels right.

How many towels do you have and where do you store them?

We have a small house and there's three of us, if we each put at least one towel a day in the washing basket we'd have 21 towels a week to wash, plus the three we'd need for the day they were being washed/drying.

I only have a small 2 bedroom house, I have a towel rail in the bathroom and over the shower door that I hang them on and then I have under the bed drawers and my daughters I keep in a drawer under her bed too. I’ve never counted but I do think I must have around 20 or more

Every ten minutes.

You are very bold (naughty) 😂

I do use my dryer around 4/5 times a week not specifically for towels but all my washing

when ever i do laundry, I just grab the bath and kitchen towels and add them in. so easily 3 times a week.

deeahgwitch · 12/06/2025 20:29

BitOutOfPractice · 12/06/2025 18:27

I just air dry my body because using an actual towel is so grim.

You are even bolder (naughtier) 😂😂

Weekly. Wash all the towels in one wash.

washing daily - are you a hotel?

We have solar power so it doesn’t cost to wash and dry them after one use. We use small towels though, not huge bath sheets.

Flannelfeet · 12/06/2025 20:32

I actually had this conversation with my husband yesterday after talking with some friends who only wash the towels after a few uses. I said I think we are weirdos, we wash after every use and most of the time I have 2 big towels as I use one for my hair. I dont know if I can use a towel twice, I think i would feel unclean.

Miyagi99 · 12/06/2025 20:32

Bath towel and hand towel once a week, tea towels every couple of days. I have some really nice towels but they’re just for show and visitors, I love my old tough one that’s about 40 years old 😂

WithIcePlease · 12/06/2025 20:38

I wash them whenever this thread appears on MN

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 12/06/2025 20:38

The world has actually gone mad. Seriously - what do you think is going to happen if you dry your clean body on a towel which was used to dry your clean body the day before?

IpsyUpsyDaisyDoos · 12/06/2025 20:39

So every day then?

TheLette · 12/06/2025 20:41

If you have a small 2 bedroom house then it would be sensible to reuse towels so you can avoid storing 20 of them! My house isn't massive but bigger than yours and I would struggle to store 20 towels. I'd definitely get rid of some and try to live an easier life with less washing!

GRex · 12/06/2025 20:49

Hand towels get replaced weekly, plus the downstairs one is replaced after guests. Each of us have our own face and body towels; they get washed every 1-2 weeks or if needed. They live on towel radiators, so don't usually get any damp smell. Swimming towels get done on the day they were used.

GRex · 12/06/2025 20:51

Tea towels aren't for hands; but we get through 2-5 depending on the week. If they get particularly wet, dirty, or my laundry lady comes (twice a week) then they get replaced.

AdoraBell · 12/06/2025 20:52

I use the towels twice, DD usually only use them once. I try to only do the wash weekly.

That's so much space storing towels instead of being used for other things.

No one needs that many towels. Just use them more than once and take some space back.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 12/06/2025 21:15

Wash? I burn them after one use. 😏

mintgreensoftlilac · 12/06/2025 21:17

genuinely curious to know how people physically fit in washing towels several times a week?!? I do a load of washing every day more or less (household of 3) and within that, towels probably get done every couple of weeks. Are people doing multiple loads a day? And what is the rationale for doing them every day/several times a week? I like to think we are a very clean-smelling family but by the sounds of it we need to do better 😂
