Is is right that an unpopular govt can reverse the democratic wishes of the UK to have nothing to do with Europe?

This is the same deal that was negotiated by Boris. It's just been extended

It's been extended until 2038 - a major concession for the UK after initially going to the table with 1 year.

MammaTo · 19/05/2025 14:19

It would redeem him of his decisions so far if
he did for me.

JHound · 19/05/2025 13:38

People think we should only receive and not have to give anything in return.

You're right. It's like people don't know how negotiations and international trade deals work.🤯

Firstly, he isn't reversing Brexit - please inform yourself properly. And secondly, it would be a bloody good thing if he did. If the referendum were rerun remain would win just on the basis that so many who voted leave have died since the vote was held.

He is reversing Brexit more or less. I expect Nige will get a good few more votes after today's fiasco. Europe doesn't like us. Nul points in Eurovision. That says it all. We'll be ripped off and made a fool of again. Worse than before.

Can you explain how this reverses Brexit please? In detail? Because I can't see it and I'm probably just being dim.

Independence voters gain a huge boost from that.

The Scottish government who want to rejoin the EU, and would have to giveaway a lot more as a result? That one?

Any attempt by either the UK or EU to portray the new [fishing] deal as a continuation of existing arrangements would be a lie, because in fact the Trade & Co-operation Agreement paved the way for annual access negotiations from 2026.

Brexit has been an unmitigated disaster. However, sadly it is not being reversed. The ill-educated extreme right ex UKIP now Reform voters took us out. The joke is that the Reform voters are exactly the sort of people Farage would not even bother to extinguish if they were on fire. They think he is god's gift but he just (very effectively) uses them. I am very disappointed with Starmer but his govt won an overwhelming majority.

It's OK, looking at the opening post and those agreeing with it, I don't think it's you being dim Wink

You know we live in Europe, right?

BinLordSeverustheMagnificent · 19/05/2025 14:29

What’s being popular got to do with it? If everyone liked him, would it be ok in your view?

Like it, or lump it, Labour won the election by a landslide.

This is not reversing Brexit. It’s trying to have some semblance of a sensible relationship with our closest partners and allies. Even more important now the US doesn’t give a shit.

BustingBaoBun · 19/05/2025 14:31

How on earth is he reversing Brexit? That's really funny!

I would like to know how, and if he has reversed Brexit, can I spend longer than 90 days in 180 in Schengen countries? That would be great as I have rellies in Europe!

Tomatotater · 19/05/2025 14:39

MissCharlotteLutterell · 19/05/2025 13:43

Well, it's a basic principle of how the UK works that "no government can bind its successor", so in theory they can't actually stop this happening.

I imagine that in reality they will set it up so that if a subsequent Government were to walk away it would be basically impossible to trade with/travel in Europe. That would be so unpopular even with brainwashed Reform types - not to mention economically catastrophic - that maybe they might have to actually enter into discussions after all.

I suspect in reality they will be quietly hoping everyone has forgotten about it by then, and they can leave it in place. The Tories have been tying themselves in knots over what they want from Brexit the entire time they were in government. They cant possibly say what everyone else can see, that its been an unmitigated disaster. They didn't manage a single trade deal that wasn't either miniscule in comparison to what we lost or a renegotiation of deals we threw away by leaving the EU. They have been hamstrung by their own pig headedness and desperation. You cant just say 'Oh we're going to make our own brilliant trade deals' and expect the rest of the world to bend over backwards to give us what we want. Everyone knew we were desperate, so we've got a small amount of rubbish trade deals and loads of nearly deals with people.
The renegotiating a better trade deal with the EU was in the Labour manifesto. It was more or less the only reason I voted for them. If people voted for them and ignored them or didn't think that actually behaving in a sensible and cooperative way wasn't going to work after the shitshow that has been Tory attempts at negotiations over the years, then that's their look out. If they negotiate a youth mobility scheme, Ill be bloody jumping for joy for my DC's.

KimberleyClark · 19/05/2025 14:40

I mean, he isn't "reversing brexit" for a start.

And the UK got 88 points.

So.....

Labour said they had 'no plans' for a youth mobility deal before the election - they did however make a pledge to improve touring for UK musicians - they haven't mentioned this as part of the deal.

CheshireCat1 · 19/05/2025 14:58

Well I’m European, British, so I suppose I’ll always have something to do with Europe.

LondonPapa · 19/05/2025 15:00

midlandsmummy123 · 19/05/2025 11:39

Granted 12 years of access to UK fishing waters without even running it by the Scottish Government!

It is a continuation of an existing deal, and international trade is not a devolved issue. And, yes, I know fisheries are devolved but as this is international trade related, it is not devolved in this instance.

Anononony · 19/05/2025 15:00

I wish we would rejoin the EU, then I could act as my own representative for GPSR and reopen my business to the EU market rather than loosing hundreds of £ per month because I've had to remove 25+ countries from my shipping zones

Brexit has been a shit show, affecting thousands of small businesses across the UK, and removing buying options for those in NI because many marketplaces (etsy for example) lump NI in with Ireland so we can't ship there

All for absolutely no benefit to us that I can see

This has already been posted, but if you have a read you will see that this isn't in the slightest a reversal of Brexit. It's minuscule tweaks around the edge to make it a fractionally less unmitigated disaster.

The vote was never to have nothing more to do with Europe. It was about leaving the European Union.

And nul points in the televote doesn't mean no one voted for you. Perhaps @Viviennemary thinks Europe doesn't like Switzerland either
