Is is right that an unpopular govt can reverse the democratic wishes of the UK to have nothing to do with Europe?

Just popping in with a friendly reminder that Games Workshop, the company that does Dungeons and Dragons figures, has more revenue than the UK fishing industry.

Thisshirtisonfire · 19/05/2025 15:09

No he's not don't be ridiculous.
I dislike Starmer but the approach to Europe is one of the things I feel most positively about. He seems to be attempting to get the best out of our relationship with Europe.
You honestly sound dumb as two planks.
He's not reversing brevity and we can't completely turn our backs on the EU despite not being part of it because we greatly rely on having a good relationship with it. If we didn't we'd be up shit creek and everyone would suffer..
Which I suppose people like you would just blame on immigration or something..

Tomatotater
The renegotiating a better trade deal with the EU was in the Labour manifesto. It was more or less the only reason I voted for them. If people voted for them and ignored them or didn't think that actually behaving in a sensible and cooperative way wasn't going to work after the shitshow that has been Tory attempts at negotiations over the years, then that's their look out. If they negotiate a youth mobility scheme, Ill be bloody jumping for joy for my DC's.

Labour said they had 'no plans' for a youth mobility deal before the election - they did however make a pledge to improve touring for UK musicians - they haven't mentioned this as part of the deal.

Edited

They've said negotiations on that will follow - the deal acknowledges the issue.

He is reversing Brexit more or less. I expect Nige will get a good few more votes after today's fiasco. Europe doesn't like us. Nul points in Eurovision. That says it all. We'll be ripped off and made a fool of again. Worse than before.

This is embarrassing drivel even for you.

What an appalling comment.

He can't do anything about Brexit and even if the UK voted to re-join in another referendum, it would take years and the EU might not even take us back!

But Europe is a big trading partner and getting the best trade deals possible with the EU is important.

'In 2023, the UK fishing fleet's revenue from landings reached £1.1 billion, with a total catch of 719 thousand tonnes. This represented an increase of 5% in value compared to 2022, mainly driven by an 12% increase in the quantity of fish landed, though some of these were lower value fish. '

Games Workshop must be doing well.

Genevieva · 19/05/2025 15:23

He’s not. He’s about to give the EU many if the benefits of U.K. membership of the EU, without giving the U.K. any if the benefits of EU membership. It’s utterly pig headed.

What utter bilge!

I'm excited to hear Viviennemary's explanation of how Brexit has been reversed!

SpiritAdder · 19/05/2025 15:26

He isn’t rejoining the EU and even if he were he wouldn’t be going against Brexit. The ballot didn’t say “Leave and never rejoin” it just said “Leave”

The UK has left the EU

There is nothing immoral about changing its mind and rejoining.

Eurovision is nothing to do with the EU. Only utter numpties believe it is.

  1. No it doesn't
  2. GW has nothing to do with dungeons and dragons

Don't know or 'would not vote^

Perhaps it means being part of European Free Trade Area like Switzerland or Norway. So a part of the marketplace and therefore subject to the rules on products and foods but not a full EU member.

I didn’t vote for Brecht but I assumed this would be the deal struck at exit. It sort of seems like a sensible middle ground.

I'm excited because it means I can spend more time in Europe with my rellies without having to laboriously count days so I don't go over (huge fines if you do, and banned from Schengen countries for between one and two years)

I didn’t vote for Brecht

Agreed. Beckett is much more accessible

😅Sorry, couldn't resist.

I quite enjoy Sartre, especially Le Diable et le Bon Dieu. But that could be too European.

I have never ever heard of this before.

But it would sum up the IQ of the average Brexiter.

Stamps in blue passports, plugs and bendy bananas...

Oh,I agree that it would be hugely better if Brexit had never happened. As I said, this only benefit , and I concede this is only a possible benefit to leisure travellers who may like them as a souvenir, against which shouldn't set massive damage to many individuals and industries. I don't know a single person has benefited from Brexit, though a few must exist, but I do know people whose businesses have been very badly affected.
Egate queues at Heathrow T2 were massive last Thursday and people were being directed to the manned positions that had about a dozen customers so it may not necessarily be a benefit. I always get through at places like Stockholm and Helsinki in less than 5 minutes even with stamping.

Apart from the benefits of being able to sell food and drink and plants to the EU without paperwork or checks?

Really, we can sell to European countries, access is going to be easier over time. We will have a revenue stream, Erasmus is restarting. And as an added benefit we’re sorting out some joint secure.
If you’re to daft to realise that Putin would not have made the moves he has without Brexit; so essentially he’s made a safer place for us. May not be as safe as we want but we’re thanks to this, we’re working toward it. So yes, there are some benefits.
