TheQuirkyMaker · 19/05/2025 11:27

Is is right that an unpopular govt can reverse the democratic wishes of the UK to have nothing to do with Europe?

Loads of them around, unfortunately.

NoisyLemonDog · 19/05/2025 13:21

Where did it say on the ballot paper that leaving meant 'having nothing to do with Europe'?

Exactly. I thought that this was what Brexiteers wanted? Negotiating individual policies and treaties rather than wholesale alignment with the EU. I'm not a fan of Starmer but can't criticise him for this.

HarrietBond · 19/05/2025 13:22

I'm just listening to the UK press questions and there is a lot of 'aren't you betraying Brexit' (from everyone, not just GB News) but also a criticism that the deal only recoups a small amount of GDP lost after Brexit. That sums up the issue, doesn't it? Politically not allowed to be seen doing anything that looks like a pathway to rejoining, but also expected to find a way of recreating all the economic benefits of EU membership.

zenas · 19/05/2025 13:23

Especially given it looks like from October, we will be able to go through EU electronic gates and not queue again for stamping of passport.

Is this part of the agreement Starmer negotiated? If so, that is a big concession, since I'm sure all other non EU citizens will still have to use the non EU lanes for entry. Can you confirm this? Maybe it's tied up with the EU "ESTA" to be introduced.

TY78910 · 19/05/2025 13:23

Sahara123 · 19/05/2025 13:13

Exactly. I think we’d have trouble trying to leave the continent of Europe..

Maybe America will have us 🙄🙄🙄🙄

HarrietBond · 19/05/2025 13:25

Using e-Gates is part of the deal. I don't know if that means we'll be able to use the EU passport lanes at staffed airports though.

Cososom · 19/05/2025 13:26

inkognithia · 19/05/2025 13:13

They do, and I used to feel the same way. I'll be the first to admit that watching Brexit unfold was like watching my library being burnt down by people who couldn't read, but these days - whilst I absolutely have not forgiven the breathing taking imbecility of the referendum - I try to be a little kinder toward those who voted in favour of imposing economic sanctions on ourselves.

I think education can go a lot further than condemnation.

I used to feel some sympathy for those who were lied to by the likes of Farage etc. There was so much - proven - misinformation and manipulation of so many people, and I know many Leave voters do now regret their vote and understand why it has been so disastrous for the country.

But the ones like the OP who still come out with this utter fucking bullshit, almost 10 years later? Nah. Fuck 'em. Ocean-going morons is bang on the money.

Ah, that's what I was thinking. It's one thing to be able to use e-gates, but quite another to be treated differently to other Non EU. But we shall see I suppose!

In return the UK gets better trading deal for agricultural products (cheaper food in the long run?), more money into the defence fund, Streamlined Travel throughout Europe, but it’s only beneficial for Europe?

People think we should only receive and not have to give anything in return.

What's perhaps more concerning is that both Farage and Badenoch have said they'll tear up the agreement if they get into power.

Putting aside their obvious dog whistles, it does remain a concern and one which must have already occurred to those drafting this deal.
I'll be very interested in seeing what, if any, rules are put into place to prevent this agreement being rendered null and void if (when?) the lunatics take over the asylum.

Well, it's a basic principle of how the UK works that "no government can bind its successor", so in theory they can't actually stop this happening.

I imagine that in reality they will set it up so that if a subsequent Government were to walk away it would be basically impossible to trade with/travel in Europe. That would be so unpopular even with brainwashed Reform types - not to mention economically catastrophic - that maybe they might have to actually enter into discussions after all.

Thedogscollar · 19/05/2025 13:43

I've read some ludicrous things on here but that's top drawer mad.
I wished he could though.
People had no idea what they were voting for and look how it's ended up😫

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 19/05/2025 13:46

WhoDatDen · 19/05/2025 12:34

Starmer's had enough. He wants Reform to take over and can't wait 4 years. This is now the start of his fast track procedures to get those keys to No. 10 into Nige's hands.

Where to start unravelling this conspiracy theory. You'll be saying he's one of the lizard people next.

Well, exactly. Making the best of a bad situation is all we can do. It's ridiculous that people want all of the benefits of EU membership without any of the obligations that go alongside that.

Catwhispereroo · 19/05/2025 13:58

I was quite 'meh' about Starmer, but I think he's actually starting to come though now. He is understated and just gets on with it quietly, as best he can. I'm starting to respect him with these common-sense agreements today and let's hope these are the first of many steps in the right direction.

VeryQuaintIrene · 19/05/2025 13:58

Hope so and I would be interested to see the results of another referendum, not that it has a hope of happening.

TooBigForMyBoots · 19/05/2025 13:59

Well that's what you get when you allow internal Tory psychodrama to play out on a national and international scale.

As for the fisherfolk, fuck 'em. Wet moany fuckers who let themselves be played like a fiddle and havent shut up about it ever since.🤷‍♀️

How much cash do we have to contribute to access the EU's Defence Fund? That won't be free - I thought we paid around £2 billion a year to access Horizon Europe.

midlandsmummy123 · 19/05/2025 11:39

Granted 12 years of access to UK fishing waters without even running it by the Scottish Government!

This is the same deal that was negotiated by Boris. It's just been extended

Absolulely this.

Same as with Trump supporters. Eventually you just realise that some people are just thick as shit and no amount of engagement or education will change that.

I love that the OP thought a vote to leave the EU meant "having nothing to do with Europe". Some people really work very hard at being absolute oceon going morons don't they?

Edited

Crazy how they are allowed to vote.
