Is is right that an unpopular govt can reverse the democratic wishes of the UK to have nothing to do with Europe?

So you point me to an unbiased source.

The OBR is unbiased. Just because you disagree with it doesn’t make it biased. All modelling will have a varied level of accuracy; the current struggles to forecast accurately are being experienced across central banking, but serious economists are working to identify improved methods of forecasting.

There is a selection of independent economic analyses of Brexit here. Do take a look.

Meanwhile still very keen to understand what you based your claim that ‘getting involved with the EU’ will cost the UK money. I’m sure you wouldn’t have put it forward without good evidence.

Sorry if being derogatory about people is your "thing."

Sorry if facts don't fit your narrative but plenty of people who aren't fluent work in other countries and several people have given examples.

HarrietBond · 21/05/2025 11:49

It felt quite derogatory to suggest that British people lack the skills and knowledge to work in Europe to be honest, Especially when the truth is that we have successfully been doing so for decades, until 2020 when Brexit effectively strangled the pipeline of opportunities for many of us.

There's not many. Which is why you should read a number of them in order to form a well researched and informed viewpoint. Especially read from people you don't agree with, it really will help your understanding.

Hi Nige

HarrietBond · 21/05/2025 12:51

I think Nigel is on holiday, isn’t he? He didn’t make it to the Commons yesterday for Starmer’s statement.

brexitbarbie · 21/05/2025 13:05

@lljkk

"They don't recognise a threat of stock depletion unless the EU might be doing it. They think it;s ok to bin 90% of their catch if it can't be sold in UK, they aren't asking for access to EU ports, they would just bin all those catches that British people don't eat."

It isn't accurate to say that fishermen bin 90% of their catch if it can't be sold. The UK's fishing industry is subject to regulations that generally prohibit discarding catch. The landing obligation, which came into force in 2019, (so please try and keep up with industry standards) means that most fish caught must be landed and counted against quotas

It is annoying when people make big statements not backed up by facts, isn't it?

"There's not many"

So perhaps you could list them to show that you know what you are talking about?

Do look at the link I provided containing an interesting mix of independent economic analyses. Feel free to add those you've seen obviously! It would be really great to see the one you cited earlier of course.

I was actually talking to @randomchap and am waiting for a response.

If the cap fits... 🙂

EsmeShelby · 21/05/2025 13:11

Only 37% of the population voted so 51% of that. I'd imagine a fair few Brexiteers have died over the past 9 years so the population is keener to rejoin. It has brought absolutely NOTHING positive to the UK.

It really does.

I assumed you just wanted an answer re independent economists by the way.

Any chance of those analyses on how much it's going to cost to be 'involved in the EU' from you though?

So the Remainers are immortal are they ?! 😆

No, he's not. HTH.

I bloody wish he would though.

Exactly

brexitbarbie · 21/05/2025 13:13

The demographics of Leave vs Remain voters showed that the oldest voters tended to vote Leave, while younger voters (and those just too young to vote) tended to vote Remain.

As the older generation die, even if nobody else changed their vote, Remain would have a majority amongst voting age adults.

And can we trust polls ?

According to the Ashford poll, most voters, seven out of 10, expected a victory for Remain, including the majority (54 per cent) of those who voted Leave. Voters who backed Ukip were the only group (52 per cent) who expected Leave to win.

HarrietBond · 21/05/2025 13:29

Are we trusting the Ashford poll? (Whichever poll it is.)

Although Brexit did surprise a lot of people, this is very true.

I don't know.

Are we?

No poll is 100%

Absolutely

Jacob Rees Mogg (that twonk) ran a poll in the Sun or Express or whatever Brexiteers read... and asked for the benefits of Brexit. He offered a few banal suggestions.

Top of the poll was....
More powerful vacuum cleaners 😂

Second was...
Inside the Dartford Tunnel the markings can now be in feet and inches and not metres.

I tell you.... I thought to myself, I can sleep well knowing what Brexit has done for me.
(I like my vacuum, and have never been in the Dartford Tunnel in my life and not likely to)

I think that sums up the intelligence of those who are still supporting Brexit.

Lampzade · 21/05/2025 13:36

I don't care. If the only brexit bonus is more powerful vacuums and markings in the Dartford tunnel, that says all I need to know.
