Personalised number plates - cringey?

Inspired by the mum I see most mornings on the school run. Range Rover, personalised plate, leggings tucked into white socks - I’m sure you know the type!

Anyway, personalised number plates - yay or nay?

Erm, it's not for me Clive, but you're not covering yourself in glory either tbh.

HollidayRanger · 29/04/2025 17:04

Not for me but I don’t judge anyone who has more money than sense Grin

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 29/04/2025 17:04

‘Never date a man who can’t open champagne without it spilling and making a mess, or who has a personalised number plate.’

Advice given to me by my godmother

SeaShellsSanctuary1 · 29/04/2025 17:05

Yep everyone knows your type

ItsSummerSoon · 29/04/2025 17:06

There was a thread not long ago which was quite amusing. The hatred for them by some is quite extreme. I've got one on my campervan.

Comedycook · 29/04/2025 17:06

Awful..

pimplebum · 29/04/2025 17:06

Live and let live , some can be fun , others tacky
have you spoken to her? , she may be your new best mate

WinterMorn · 29/04/2025 17:06

100% tacky

CoffeeCantata · 29/04/2025 17:07

Well, they're certainly one of the most conspicuous forms of consumption!

I do tend to judge people but then a very lovely friend got one...

I don't like them but we all spend our money in different ways and some people would judge me for the things I buy.

NoThankYouSis · 29/04/2025 17:07

They’re everywhere at the moment. I don’t know why you’d want strangers to know your name as you drive around, it’s not for me but lots of people seem to like them.

TY78910 · 29/04/2025 17:08

Depends what you get tbh. One that spells out ‘spicey’ or your name - yea. One that means something to you but others wouldn’t have a clue - sure. I looked before for DH’s bday. Would have been something along the lines of random letter, his lucky number, first name + middle + surname initial. Would look like like any other plate to the average person

FuglyBitch · 29/04/2025 17:09

No, total cringe

Goldenboysmum · 29/04/2025 17:10

I have one, but unless you know me you'd have no idea what it means.

It has nothing to do with my name, date of birth etc

MyUmberSeal · 29/04/2025 17:11

They are one of my top 2 Room 101 deposits. Personalised number plates and the baby on board signs people have in their cars. Really naff.

But, different strokes for different folks.

SocksShmocks · 29/04/2025 17:12

I don’t like personalised number plates or want one myself but I also don’t like judging people for tucking their leggings into their socks. On balance I’d rather be friends with a nice person who had a personalised number plate (and indeed I am).

Sarah2891 · 29/04/2025 17:12

Very cringey.

ChocolatesAndRainbows · 29/04/2025 17:13

Doesn't bother me but then I'm not jealous of other people's wealth.

Locutus2000 · 29/04/2025 17:13

You can get a personal plate for £250 straight from the DVLA.

The three digit ones cost thousands, but that's not what most people have.

My old car cost £600 with a PP included! Sent it off to a developing country with it still attached.

XenoBitch · 29/04/2025 17:13

I know a few people with them. Personalised plates are not always obvious. Some are just where they have chosen specific letters and numbers because they have some significance to them.
I know someone who an Operating Department Practitioner, and part of her number plate is ODP.
Another has his initials and a couple of numbers. It is on his car that he has through PIP. They are transferable so whenever he changes cars, it goes on it. His way of making it feel more like his own car for 3 years.

I don’t like baby on board signs because they seem to be saying ‘don’t hit my car there’s an important baby on board but everyone else’s car is fair game’.

ZoggyStirdust · 29/04/2025 17:14

I have a few, all the simple 3 letter 3 number ones

im not super keen on the ones that almost spell
out a word if you incorrectly space the letters, I think that’s a bit tacky but I can’t get overly excited.

Hiddenmyname · 29/04/2025 17:14

I think they have had their day... probably because people change their cars so often now it's not necessary to hide their age. You do tend to see them on Rangerovers, trying to disguise the fact it's quite an old cheaper model.
I have one on retention from years ago, but I think it's tacky and too easy to identify the driver. Also a hassle putting it on a new car every year!

I always thought it was if the car was in an accident, then emergency services would know there is a baby on board... although they would be looking anyway, sign or not.

CoastalCalm · 29/04/2025 17:15

By husband bought me one for my 50th and I bought him one for his 50th - just basic format with our initials but we like them , makes me smile seeing them on the cars side by side

ThatJadeBiscuit · 29/04/2025 17:16

I don’t really like personalised number plates but I looove socks over my leggings 😂
