Personalised number plates - cringey?

Inspired by the mum I see most mornings on the school run. Range Rover, personalised plate, leggings tucked into white socks - I’m sure you know the type!

Anyway, personalised number plates - yay or nay?

Illegally spaced ones are the worst. Its like wearing noticeably fake goods, what's the point?! If you can't afford it-don't bother!
I do appreciate a good company personalised plate, as sad as that sounds!

ICanTellYouMissMe · 29/04/2025 17:33

@EnjoythemoneyJanegot to be honest, I’d rather someone had a personal reg than was as snotty and judgemental as you come off in your last post.

wizzywig · 29/04/2025 17:34

Postman pat has one

REDB99 · 29/04/2025 17:35

The only people I have ever met with them are not nice people at all, self centred and egotistical. They’re naff and an embarrassing thing to spend money on.

MannequinsArePeopleToo · 29/04/2025 17:35

Definitely cringey.

Shade17 · 29/04/2025 17:35

As said, Baby on Board signs are for emergency services. It’s not a notice to other drivers to be extra careful round the precious cargo, they’re to indicate to first responders in the event of a really serious collision that they should also look for a child inside the car.

No, they’re not.

Anonym00se · 29/04/2025 17:37

DH got bought one years ago as a gift from a rich client. He loves it. I hate it.

TalbotAMan · 29/04/2025 17:39

My mother bought a personalised plate for my father for his birthday. He used it until he died, and then she used it until she died. When we sold her car we retained the plate and as it fits my initials better than my siblings' and they thought I should have it it ended up sitting in my filing cabinet on retention.

After several more years I realised that I needed to decide whether to use it, sell it or let it lapse when renewal time came round. So spending £36 for new plates - insurance weren't fussed - I put in on my car. I - or my children - can still sell it in the future. I probably wouldn't have bought one myself, but this was given to me. Is that a problem?

DramaAlpaca · 29/04/2025 17:43

My parents have two cars with personalised number plates. My sibling has one and so do my niece and nephew.

I don't. I think they are tacky and a bit silly. I keep my mouth firmly shut around my family though, they love their personalised plates.

ItsSummerSoon · 29/04/2025 17:44

XenoBitch · 29/04/2025 17:16

I don't think you can have ones that make the car look newer that it is.

No you can't. My is something to do with the campervan and our initials. It's nothing about hiding the age of the van. It's just part of the make over we did like putting different wheels and headlights on to our taste.

ThisOldThang · 29/04/2025 17:44

Off topic, but do tradesmen get them automatically/free based upon trade - e.g. GAS?

I see a lot of vans with plates that match the trade and I've been wondering if it's an attempt to combat theft of vans or their use in criminality - e.g. the police can instantly see that the plate doesn't match the business.

brunettemic · 29/04/2025 17:50

Caring that someone else has a personalised plate is cringey.

TheTecknician · 29/04/2025 17:53

Not for me. A fair few workmates at my last job had them - I guess they've become more affordable in recent years. I think they're somewhat naff. If people don't know who I am then they don't need to know. That's my philosophy.

ApolloandDaphne · 29/04/2025 17:54

I have one. It's the initials of my DD1 and the number is the age that she was when she died. I don't care what you, or anyone else, thinks about it. I love it and it means so
much to me.

NeedToChangeName · 29/04/2025 17:56

I think they're naff and tacky, but difficult to articulate why

Cynic17 · 29/04/2025 17:56

It would definitely be a "nay" for me, but everyone is free to do whatever they like.

Searchingforthelight · 29/04/2025 17:56

Are leggings tucked into white socks some sort of look now?
She should smarten herself up- sounds awful

thischarmimgwoman · 29/04/2025 17:57

I wouldn’t have one but I look at some of them and struggle to see what they’re trying to spell! Too much of a stretch, or I’m thick!

TheTecknician · 29/04/2025 17:58

@NeedToChangeName I guess for many they're an ego boost.

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 29/04/2025 17:58

Personally I hate Range Rovers (but only because me and DH run a car dealership and we’ve had to pay for new engines in 2 days of them that were only 3.5 years old they are absolute shite, saying that I get why people like them). I also hate the socks over leggings thing but I’m not trendy particularly so what would I know. But I love private number plates, we have about 10 on our car collection and they all follow a sort of ‘theme’ with similar formats. But everyone is different and who the heck cares and why are you judging her? She’s probably an absolutely lovely person. I would only judge her if she wasn’t a nice person to be honest.

TheMasterplan23 · 29/04/2025 17:58

Each to their own but I’m not a fan.

I think it’s just a cringey way of showing people you’ve got a bit of extra money*

*unless you’re my Ex who has ‘no money’ 🙄

springintoaction321 · 29/04/2025 18:00

WinterMorn · 29/04/2025 17:06

100% tacky

So what

I think there are much worse things to worry about!

Bonbonvanilla · 29/04/2025 18:00

I don't like the ones that spell a word, especially when it doesn't quite work, but I think there's a place for number and initials ones.

HowDoYouSolveAProblemLikeMyRear · 29/04/2025 18:07

I don't like them and suspect many might be bought by slightly shallow types!

However, I wouldn't make assumptions about any particular individual with one - how would I know if it were a gift they use so as not to cause offence or if it's even their own car.

Plus, when "nouveau" pops into my head, I'd do well to remember that my snobbery is a moral failing, whereas a lack of taste is no such thing 😣

Tooty78 · 29/04/2025 18:07

SocksShmocks · 29/04/2025 17:13

I don’t like baby on board signs because they seem to be saying ‘don’t hit my car there’s an important baby on board but everyone else’s car is fair game’.

Can't remember which comedian said it, but they were ripping into people who have the stickers with all the Mum,Dad plus kids stuck on the rear window.
He called it a paedophiles menu🤮
