Personalised number plates - cringey?

Inspired by the mum I see most mornings on the school run. Range Rover, personalised plate, leggings tucked into white socks - I’m sure you know the type!

Anyway, personalised number plates - yay or nay?

That’s a trailer that you tow behind a car.

Mine is a wagon.

Oh I see what you mean. Apologies I’m not horsey though they are beautiful animals - I love their soulful eyes

Lonelycrab · 29/04/2025 19:29

If I was looking to buy a car and it had personalised plates it would massively put me off, as I’d have to pay to get it put back to normal so I didn’t look like a twat

Tacky, self absorbed and embarrassing

Yes it’s saying (to me) ‘I am so special and unique I simply cannot have the DVLA issued number plate - unthinkable’

SipandClean · 29/04/2025 19:32

Not for me I must admit but live and let live. I certainly wouldn’t be bitchy enough to start a thread about it.

Doesn't bother me but then I'm not jealous of other people's wealth.

Odd you consider a PNP a sign off wealth. Most are fairly cheap to buy.

I don’t like baby on board signs because they seem to be saying ‘don’t hit my car there’s an important baby on board but everyone else’s car is fair game’.

And I find they are always the people speeding!

or tail gaiting!

Whybother618 · 29/04/2025 19:35

I think they are dreadful. My PIL love them. They drive crappy old cars with number plates that are a single letter and a single number, think along the lines of B1 and B2. The plates are worth £100,000’s. I just find it ridiculous.

RealEagle · 29/04/2025 19:37

My kids got me one a couple of years ago for Xmas ,I don’t care what people think because I love it

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 29/04/2025 19:37

They're helpful if the driver is an idiot, you can be so much more personal with your insults.

E.g. 'how about using your fucking indicator, Mmiike?'

notacooldad · 29/04/2025 19:37

No, I'm not sure .
What do you mean?

YourFunnyTiger · 29/04/2025 19:43

There's a smart car who has no c4p as their numberplate round our area.
Parks like a wanker.

I have a personalised plate it's just my initials and part of my last name, hubby bought it for valentines day. His reason was because I can't remember number plates, i don't know why I just can't, he said if I ever got pulled over they would have a field day. Some people have others prefer not to have, each to their own

My husband, who absolutely hates them, brought me one because I can’t remember them normally. And so I can find it in large car parks.

Wasn’t expensive and I love it.

They are all issued by the DVLA

Seymour5 · 29/04/2025 19:47

Someone I know pays for a parking space linked to his reg. So he keeps a PP, linked to his business, then he doesn’t have to change his details with the parking company when he changes vehicles.

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 29/04/2025 19:50

@thegoodlifeha

you are being disingenuous perhaps,
maybe I should have been really clear by saying the standard registration issued by DVLA - for the avoidance of doubt

ChompandaGrazia · 29/04/2025 19:52

I have one. I’ve had it for about 20 years. It’s very little bother to move it to a new car.

There are a lot of things I think look bad but I don’t bother making a thread about it. How exactly does a personalised plate bother you?

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 29/04/2025 19:52

Love personalised number plates but only if it's obviously spelling a name. I don't see the point of ones that mean something to someone but aren't obvious - what's the point?

I’ve got one with my three initials and a number - I’ve had it for decades and have always loved it. But it’s a different story for the ones that attempt to spell out your whole name or a catchy word or something - nope, not for me thanks…

Mine's like yours. It doesn't stand out at all. It's the ones that try too hard that are laughable. M155 COP. K444 REN. M444 RKN. Postcodes. B055 XXX. MUM. DAD. MR5 XXX MR XXX.

It's speaks volumes about the people who keep saying they are cringe. I wonder how many other things they judge people on and feel irritated what people spend their money on.

They seem quite sad and cringe themselves.

MyNameIsX · 29/04/2025 20:01

To be fair, PNP are much less naff, compared to those who drive a highly leverage/financed car, and then live in a dump.

Fur coat, no knickers.

I suppose it’s similar to having a tattoo no one will ever see, or nice underwear just for yourself.

Ineedanewsofa · 29/04/2025 20:04

Never really seen the appeal but now I have to put my reg into every sodding parking machine to get a ticket/pay/be magically released because I happen to have that specific app I’m coming round to the idea of only having one to remember for the rest of my driving years…
