Personalised number plates - cringey?

Inspired by the mum I see most mornings on the school run. Range Rover, personalised plate, leggings tucked into white socks - I’m sure you know the type!

Anyway, personalised number plates - yay or nay?

I drive a car with personalised plates but it’s not a Range Rover and I’d never tuck my leggings into socks. Is is specifically the socks that make it unacceptable?

Hellohah · 29/04/2025 18:11

We were behind someone with the reg ... MMIIKE the other day.

DS made me really chuckle when he asked whether I thought poor Mike had a stutter.

Gardeningleaverocks · 29/04/2025 18:16

I have a personalised plate it's just my initials and part of my last name, hubby bought it for valentines day. His reason was because I can't remember number plates, i don't know why I just can't, he said if I ever got pulled over they would have a field day. Some people have others prefer not to have, each to their own

Yo be fair. Tucking your leggings in socks is not a show off snobby thing. The Gen Z's are all doing it.

I think they have had their day... probably because people change their cars so often now it's not necessary to hide their age. You do tend to see them on Rangerovers, trying to disguise the fact it's quite an old cheaper model.
I have one on retention from years ago, but I think it's tacky and too easy to identify the driver. Also a hassle putting it on a new car every year!

Who the hell is getting a new car every year?

BruceAndNosh · 29/04/2025 18:22

Mumsnet.com hates them. "More money than sense" etc.
I love mine, I've had it for 25 years and the initial cost plus the cost of transferring it to each new car has still cost significantly less than a single Mulberry Bayswater handbag.

LlynTegid · 29/04/2025 18:24

You mean Range Rover that they would fail their driving test if they had to take it in one?

As for leggings, I wonder who invented them and having a laugh at every fashion victim's expense.

The slim young people can carry most things off.

My Dad bought my Mum one must be around 30 years ago. It has become a very very popular acronym and is worth a lot of money now. Dad died two years ago and it will pass to me, I would never sell it. I think you're being stuck up and judgy along with other in here. Not nice OP.

LoveTKO · 29/04/2025 18:32

Chavvy….I’m happy to judge.

buriedminion · 29/04/2025 18:35

I’m glad this came up because this week I saw 2 that I am dying to know who owns them, first one was B1G AK and the other was 1 PU. DH and I were guessing, Amir Khan (driver too old) second Peter Ustinov? (Couldn’t see driver). Any other suggestions?

Monty88 · 29/04/2025 18:36

So tacky!

ExitPursuedByABare · 29/04/2025 18:36

Mine’s my initials. Easy Christmas or birthday present. Dd has one.

HausofHolbein · 29/04/2025 18:37

I love them! When I'm sat in traffic, I like to have a look and try to work out what they are. Like a PP, the business ones make me laugh.

HausofHolbein · 29/04/2025 18:37

Although - I hate the 3D printed plates, etc.

Pricelessadvice · 29/04/2025 18:38

I have a personalised number plate but I’m not a mum, nor do I wear leggings 🤣
Infact I have 2. One on my car and one on my horsebox. You’d hate me!

‘Never date a man who can’t open champagne without it spilling and making a mess, or who has a personalised number plate.’

Advice given to me by my godmother

Was she single for long?

tartyflette · 29/04/2025 18:44

A friend had one which spelled out her DH's name, but had to have the spacing of the letters altered so that it could be read 'correctly'.
She had bought it for his birthday. Unfortunately they were stopped by the police, fined £80 and told to put it back to how it originally was immediately.
So the cost of a new plate, too. Something to consider if you change the layout, spacing etc. Only needs a bored cop to stop you and you're down over £100.

springintoaction321 · 29/04/2025 18:00

So what

I think there are much worse things to worry about!

You may have missed it, but this entire thread is about whether these plates are cringey or not. That’s the point of it!

CuriousRunner · 29/04/2025 18:50

I don’t have a massive view overall. But I live near a traditional seaside town. Think more Blackpool than Salcombe 🤣 and there are several number plates with the town kind of spelled out. For me it underlines the “big fish, small pond” mentality that is round here

user2848502016 · 29/04/2025 18:53

Yep cringe and waste of money.

minnienono · 29/04/2025 18:53

Range rovers (the proper all terrain ones and only if you live rurally and need a 4x4) get my wrath even more. Too wide for parking spaces!

Laughing at reg plates and stammers 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Hadalifeonce · 29/04/2025 18:55

I have a personalised number plate, but it's not obvious as it is standard format.

babasaclover · 29/04/2025 18:55

Yeah fully for cunts only. Right up there with tattoos of your wife / kids names and or dates of birth. Cringe!!!
