Personalised number plates - cringey?

Inspired by the mum I see most mornings on the school run. Range Rover, personalised plate, leggings tucked into white socks - I’m sure you know the type!

Anyway, personalised number plates - yay or nay?

I think they have had their day... probably because people change their cars so often now it's not necessary to hide their age. You do tend to see them on Rangerovers, trying to disguise the fact it's quite an old cheaper model.
I have one on retention from years ago, but I think it's tacky and too easy to identify the driver. Also a hassle putting it on a new car every year!

I don't think you can have ones that make the car look newer that it is.

Also a hassle putting it on a new car every year!

I doubt that is a problem for most people.

Ponderingwindow · 29/04/2025 17:18

Don’t care if they are cringey. My plate helps connect me to people.
It’s a way of communicating and I’ve met people with shared interests via my personalized plate. Perfect tools in the ASD arsenal. Plus they are fun.

Littlebitpsycho · 29/04/2025 17:18

My car came with one when I bought it and I never bothered to change it back. It's not an OTT one though. Live and let live - I literally couldn't give less of a shit what people think of my numberplate 🤷‍♀️

SeventeenClovesOfGarlic · 29/04/2025 17:18

XenoBitch · 29/04/2025 17:15

I always thought it was if the car was in an accident, then emergency services would know there is a baby on board... although they would be looking anyway, sign or not.

That's a myth. People don't take them out when there's no kid in the car and the signs break on impact anyway.

ZoggyStirdust · 29/04/2025 17:18

XenoBitch · 29/04/2025 17:16

I don't think you can have ones that make the car look newer that it is.

You can’t put a dated plate on that makes the car seem younger, but the simple ones (3 letter 3 number) are what’s known as dateless so can go on any car.

ARainyNightInSoho · 29/04/2025 17:18

I associate them with people who holiday in Dubai.

ThejoyofNC · 29/04/2025 17:19

You sound delightful and not in the slightest bit judgemental.

Why does it bother you what assortment of letters or numbers a stranger has on their car? It obviously makes them happy and has 0 effect on you. As for judging people on the school run, shame on you.

finallyskinny · 29/04/2025 17:19

All my in laws have them, i got one for my wedding gift as a way to say welcome to the family.... we all have our first initial and then a few letters from our surname

Nottodaty · 29/04/2025 17:19

When we recently got our new car my husband managed to get a number plate that is sort of my name - didn’t cost anymore as it was part of the allocation for that year new number plate. Unless you knew me it just looks like a normal number plate!

marmiteandcheeseoncrumpetspls · 29/04/2025 17:19

Not for me.

There was thread once where you named what you would never do regardless of wealth.
Buying a pp was top of my list!

ICanTellYouMissMe · 29/04/2025 17:22

I used to think they were really wanky, but in my 40s I’ve decided not to be a judgmental cow, and now think…ah fuck it, whatever makes everyone happy dude.

Randomlygeneratedname · 29/04/2025 17:23

I like guessing what they say when I spot them out and about and I tuck leggings into white socks because I'm down with the kids.

DisagreeingALot · 29/04/2025 17:23

V v v v tacky.

ginnitonic · 29/04/2025 17:24

I am on my second personalised numberplate - I have the perfect one now that spells out my odd Christian name - and it was cheap because it means nothing to anyone else.
I have my previous plate up for sale online ATM - hoping to at least cover the original cost and the retention fee. That was cheap too. So if you have £600 to spare...
I think they are really fun, and it saves having to remember your reg number in car parks. 😀
Nb. I tuck my leggings into my socks to help keep off the ticks/Lyme disease. This area is rife 😬

driedgrasses · 29/04/2025 17:24

Some of them are quite funny. We saw one which spelled S1GHT and it was an opticians car with their ad on the side. I like things like that.

MyLegoHair · 29/04/2025 17:25

They are not for me, but live and let live I say.

For the love of god though, someone tell me what am I supposed to do with my socks?! In/out/invisible /contrast. I didn't understand the "rules" as a teen in the 90s and haven't kept up since. Laces too. Cheers 😄

FloorLamp · 29/04/2025 17:26

I have one that matches the model of my car so not that personal to me exactly. A late night spur of the moment eBay purchase cheaper that it honestly should have cost so I couldn't resist. It's probably worth more than the actual car right now. 🤣 It did take me nearly two years to actually assign it to the car cos I felt like a bit of a dick but oh well! 😆

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 29/04/2025 17:27

They are so commonplace these days, that I don't really think they are special any more.

Shade17 · 29/04/2025 17:27

Nasty bastardised ones are tacky and chavvy as hell. Ones like “F1” not so much

EnjoythemoneyJane · 29/04/2025 17:28

MyUmberSeal · 29/04/2025 17:11

They are one of my top 2 Room 101 deposits. Personalised number plates and the baby on board signs people have in their cars. Really naff.

But, different strokes for different folks.

As @XenoBitch said, Baby on Board signs are for emergency services. It’s not a notice to other drivers to be extra careful round the precious cargo, they’re to indicate to first responders in the event of a really serious collision that they should also look for a child inside the car.

But yeah, with you on the personal reg’s. I appreciate some are occasionally funny, but it’s mainly just a flex for dimwits and show offs - ‘I’m far too flash and loaded and younique to just use the letters and numbers that came with the car, I have to have my own special random letters and numbers so everyone knows it’s meeeee’.

ladyamy · 29/04/2025 17:28

TY78910 · 29/04/2025 17:08

Depends what you get tbh. One that spells out ‘spicey’ or your name - yea. One that means something to you but others wouldn’t have a clue - sure. I looked before for DH’s bday. Would have been something along the lines of random letter, his lucky number, first name + middle + surname initial. Would look like like any other plate to the average person

I don’t mind those ones

Ohnobackagain · 29/04/2025 17:29

@AmyAmb I like them if they are related to the car model name or a jokey word rather than the name of the owner/driver but not bothered really.

Missey85 · 29/04/2025 17:30

SocksShmocks · 29/04/2025 17:13

I don’t like baby on board signs because they seem to be saying ‘don’t hit my car there’s an important baby on board but everyone else’s car is fair game’.

What about the stick figure family ones! 😂

stillawip · 29/04/2025 17:31

I’ve got one with my three initials and a number - I’ve had it for decades and have always loved it. But it’s a different story for the ones that attempt to spell out your whole name or a catchy word or something - nope, not for me thanks…
