Personalised number plates - cringey?

Inspired by the mum I see most mornings on the school run. Range Rover, personalised plate, leggings tucked into white socks - I’m sure you know the type!

Anyway, personalised number plates - yay or nay?

Cringe

TheatreTraveller · 29/04/2025 18:56

Mine is very important to me and holds a lot of emotion.
I'm about as far away as being a 'chav' as possible. Totally boring middle aged glasses wearing geek.

They’re everywhere at the moment. I don’t know why you’d want strangers to know your name as you drive around, it’s not for me but lots of people seem to like them.

Especially when most of them literally look like you’ve spelled the name wrong as they are too tight to pay for the proper one 😂🤦‍♀️😂

newyearsresolurion · 29/04/2025 18:58

I love mine don't care what others think!!

Thehop · 29/04/2025 18:59

My dh hates them. Thinks they're tacky and cringey.

I'be got one anyway 😂😂

Plates which correctly spell out names usually sell for more than most cars are worth, it isn’t really about being tight but more that it is unaffordable for most people so they go for the closest they can get in the affordable range.

I don’t really like personalised number plates but I looove socks over my leggings 😂

I really like the socks over leggings look but can’t find the right socks. What brand do you suggest please?

whitewinespritzerandastraw · 29/04/2025 19:04

I don’t mind initials ones. But ones that try to spell out names are not my cup of tea

Feelingstrange2 · 29/04/2025 19:06

Err no.

But I do own one!

It was cute on my MX5, but I've got it on retention now.

MyNameIsX · 29/04/2025 19:08

They are utter w&nk, and the people who have them are, ergo, utter w&nkers.
Especially those who put them on a 10k motor, or those who have a 100k set of wheels, parked outside a house barely worth more….

You know who you are.

Edit: All of you on MN who have them, are excluded from the above description - you are all lovely and possess taste etc.

Hadalifeonce · 29/04/2025 18:55

I have a personalised number plate, but it's not obvious as it is standard format.

Me too. You wouldn’t know it’s personalised unless you knew my name as it’s unusual.

Left · 29/04/2025 19:12

Perso plates - I’ve never been tempted to get them, just not for me I guess. No one in my family has them and not sure if any friends do, not really on my radar. I used to think they were cringe but I’m just indifferent now.

Socks over leggings - YES to this. No idea why I’ve embraced this in my 40s but there you go. Tip for people who want to dabble in this - don’t tuck your leggings into socks, that would look weird. Just put your leggings on and pull the socks on over them, simple.

Mine is on my motability car 🤷🏻‍♀️

I have done advanced driving as part of professional training, sadly no longer able to work, but haven’t forgotten the importance of safe driving. If that makes me a wanker, so be it.

ThePoshUns · 29/04/2025 19:15

Oh here we go again. You do you. Whatever.

We used to wear slouch socks over leggings mid - late 80s and into the early 90s so it’s probably nostalgia

SmooothMoooves · 29/04/2025 19:19

I have my leggings tucked into my socks and a personalised number plate. I don’t think I’m cringe, and couldn’t give a shit if you do Grin

again like others though, it’s standard format and unless you know my name you wouldn’t ‘know’

think MR54 RAY (if I was Mrs Gray)

Favouritefruits · 29/04/2025 19:19

I’m thinking of getting an Irish dateless plate for my car as I’m sick of people (school mums) discussing who has old cars blah blah blah, it’s only £300 and if it’s going to make me feel less self conscious for having an old car then I’ll do it! Cheaper than buying new cars.

babasaclover · 29/04/2025 19:23

Pricelessadvice · 29/04/2025 18:38

I have a personalised number plate but I’m not a mum, nor do I wear leggings 🤣
Infact I have 2. One on my car and one on my horsebox. You’d hate me!

Doesn’t the horse box have to match the car? Like caravans do?

butterfly0404 · 29/04/2025 19:23

I've got a personalised plate, it's a combo of my DP's name and mine, as it was cheaper than just buying something with mine alone:-) I love it and don't give a flying fanny what anyone thinks.

For £300 you can get a prefix style plate, much better than the NI ones.

That’s a trailer that you tow behind a car.

Mine is a wagon.

EllasNonny · 29/04/2025 19:25

Oh to be as classy as such a judgemental dick...

WickWood · 29/04/2025 19:25

Not a fan of personalised number plates and would never, ever get one, i do find them tacky I can't lie, but to each their own, I have a toilet brush and I know some on here find them tacky 😂

Thanks for that explanation. I am aware but no point in having if it doesn’t actually spell your name

Weirdwalk · 29/04/2025 19:25

Tacky, self absorbed and embarrassing
