To ask about shandals?

I love a shandal, mountain warehouse particularly.

BUT! Is there an actual sandal you find comfy for all day walking in the sun?

Which might look a bit better with a summer dress…

Had to google.
Tbh, I would not be seen dead in these. They look like a cartoon tramp's shoes; found in a skip, but the toe section has to be cut off because they are too small.
Quite a few threads about sandal in style and beauty at the moment, with some lovely examples

I'd never even heard of a shandal: I thought it was a typo.

Having googled them I see they are a summer version of trainers. And pretty ugly looking.

I can't stand this fashion for wearing trainers with dresses so even if they are comfortable they would be a total non starter for me.

KimberleyClark · 11/04/2025 07:55

They don’t look like they’d be comfortable to wear without socks either.

Sorry OP - I promise this isn't a judgement on your taste, but @TheCountofMountingCrispBags post has really made me giggle.

Good luck on your sandal quest. I agree with PP that there are a few posts about this at the moment in Style and Beauty - I think the consensus on one I saw was Teva sandals fit the bill.

TheCountofMountingCrispBags · 11/04/2025 08:03

@LeaveTaking - please don't think I am scorning your taste in shoes - lord knows my Hooters aren't exactly catwalk! just shandles are not for me!

LeaveTaking · 11/04/2025 08:09

Haha, I know they’re ugly but they’re so convenient.

I’m coming out of the stage with young kids where just being dressed is enough to leave the house. It’s time for the shandals to retire.

@KimberleyClark thanks for the link! They look lovely.

I’ll have a look over in style!

When I was a kid we went on holiday to the South of France and on arrival my eccentric professor uncle bent down and cut the front third from his shoes whist still wearing them. He said something about how warm it was but other than that he never mentioned anything about his -what I have now learnt are Shandals.

LeaveTaking · 11/04/2025 08:10

I think I’ve found a gateway sandal to help me move from shandals. 😁

Crikey Op , having small children does not excuse you from crimes against fashion. These are also horrific and I googled shandals and almost threw up in my mouth!!

how of are you OP?!?

Early 40s.

Is it a bad time to confess my kids also wear them. … we’re very outdoorsy people.

Goodness though, I didn’t realise they provoked quite such a reaction.

Mumsnet might be relieved to hear my shandals actually snapped, hence making the change. I cannot wear them even if I wanted to.

I’m an outdoorsy person too and similar age and I wouldn’t let my dignity drip out of a Shandal. I can only assume the children are too small to have an opinion - good luck to you when they get to tweenage!

gerbo · 11/04/2025 08:21

Birkenstocks are brilliant, so hard-wearing and vv comfortable.

LeaveTaking · 11/04/2025 08:22

Ok, steady Mumsnet!

Comfort - no idea

Look good with a summer dress - these wouldn’t look good with a bin bag. They are 100% practical wear

I can see you all now eating your boiled egg sandwiches on a bench

gerbo · 11/04/2025 08:25

I've been wearing them since my kids were little and we are pretty outdoorsy too. They have that geeky look but I think they're cool too. They've taken me on many city breaks with serious pavement pounding. Go larger on your normal size so you have a little room.

TaggieO · 11/04/2025 08:27

Have a look at teva sandals. They’re v comfy and suitable for being outdoorsy. Just not so hideous!

QueenOfToast · 11/04/2025 08:28

I had to google what this meant too, but once I did I was very taken with this pricey pair https://mahabis.com/products/tova-sandals?upper=rdrd

Also from the same company a more traditional shandal style …

IndigoDynamo · 11/04/2025 08:28

A goggle shows me some very different things.

The link to the ‘original shandal’ is a lace up shoe with the front bit cut out and leather round the big toe - errr they’re a no from me. But carry on OP!

The shopping bit shows normal walking sandals - which are really comfortable. I live in my leather Merrell ones in the heat. Brilliant for packing light as they work with dresses, shorts, linens and more. Walked around all day in the sun in them for years.

Nailed it 😄

Anyway, since Birkenstocks have gone rogue - for my feet anyway - I've recently bought these for summer walking when it's too hot for a closed in shoe.

They are still horrific and £129?!?! Jeeeezzzz

Crisplet · 11/04/2025 08:31

I think these abominations belong in Shtyle and Beauty.

Planesmistakenforstars · 11/04/2025 08:32

I had to google them too, because I worried that it might mean a sandal that you'd shat in. That would actually be preferable to the crimes that they actually are, or the horrific picture you posted upthread.

theressomanytinafeysicouldbe · 11/04/2025 08:35

Just googled it as I had not clue.

I'm on the fence OP, actually I quite like the north face ones! But I don't think they are my kind of thing.

How about something like these:
