To ask about shandals?

I love a shandal, mountain warehouse particularly.

BUT! Is there an actual sandal you find comfy for all day walking in the sun?

Which might look a bit better with a summer dress…

I promise you. These do not go with dresses.

Maybe maxi dresses that are so long you can't see your feet (sorry OP!)

LeaveTaking · 11/04/2025 09:46

I do feel the need to add I’m not judging anyone who does wear actual shandles. Some people suit an eccentric look!

Try Russell and Bromley in the sale (only in the sale!) - fisherman is a great and comfy thing.

Yeah, it’s ok. I’m quite a confident person so don’t mind a wee bashing about my footwear. Not for the feint hearted.

No, it’s the mountain warehouse walking sandals I have been wearing. Also not a popular choice!

Some great suggestions on here for comfort, style and walking though so will have a delve.

I think the mistake was posting in style and beauty, they are perfectly practical and comfortable and definitely have their place.

The last thing Mountain Rescue need is people insisting on looking stylish when they are walking in the hills

This is in AIBU.

I might request a Shandal section from Mumsnet HQ. 😂

100 percent unless your my 80 year old mother in law

My 92 year old gran wouldn't be seen dead in those. I think she would rise up-mid service- and throw them at the head of the person who had put them on her feet.

Charmofgoldfinch · 11/04/2025 09:49

OP - you wear your Shandals with pride! If you’re an outdoorsy family and do lots of hiking etc then fashion sandals don’t cut it!

I've seen SO MANY people out on the moors in flip flops or walking Hadrian's Wall in stupid fashion-trainers that I no longer care if I look as though I'm living in my car.

Branleuse · 11/04/2025 09:50

Shandals! Great name.
I like fishermans sandals because I don't want to always get my toes out.

Exactly!

Nothing more foolish than someone in dangerous footwear/inadequate clothing

Ahhh sorry! I just assumed style and beauty because everyone was being so dramatic about something practical!

Birdist · 11/04/2025 09:52

Well, those are quite something.

My preference would be proper walking sandals eg Tevas for walking in the heat and Birkenstock Arizonas for pottering about.

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 11/04/2025 09:53

You make your kids wear them 😲 and ss haven't been informed.
They're worse than crocs 😂

I'd never even heard of a shandal: I thought it was a typo.

Having googled them I see they are a summer version of trainers. And pretty ugly looking.

I can't stand this fashion for wearing trainers with dresses so even if they are comfortable they would be a total non starter for me.

Edited

I also assumed either a typo or a sandal line in tribute to Sean Connery was being launched.

Sorry OP they are irredeemable.

TimeForATerf · 11/04/2025 09:56

I can recommend Merrell sandals for walking lots and lots in the heat, did many years in the same pair round the theme parks of Florida when the kids were small. I still have them, I won't say which pair, but they still do them, and I still have them 20 years on, and they are still in good nick. Mine are a bit fugly though.

Some of these are ok.

Had to google.
Tbh, I would not be seen dead in these. They look like a cartoon tramp's shoes; found in a skip, but the toe section has to be cut off because they are too small.
Quite a few threads about sandal in style and beauty at the moment, with some lovely examples

I thought it was something Sean Connery wore in the summertime.

Haha, I know they’re ugly but they’re so convenient.

I’m coming out of the stage with young kids where just being dressed is enough to leave the house. It’s time for the shandals to retire.

@KimberleyClark thanks for the link! They look lovely.

I’ll have a look over in style!

You are only just coming out of the kiddie stage and are already in shandals?

I thought they were worn by retirees only!

You need Birkenstocks or something surely?

Ok, steady Mumsnet!

People are being a bit mean aren't they! I've come here in solidarity with you, OP, as while I'd never heard of a shandal, I googled it and realised I have a pair!

You may be on the wrong forum for this type of chat. A outdoorsy/hiking themed facebook group might be better. If you wore them up here in the North of Scotland you'd fit right in :)

Azureshores · 11/04/2025 10:02

unfortunately for my mother inlaw she has to for her feet - Sometimes health issues constraint what you wear

Lucked · 11/04/2025 10:05

I hope the OP is able to recover from this!

I didn’t know what they were but my kids did have something similar from Keen when they were younger for outdoor holidays.

Look you want to wear them in the Lake District or on a Scottish beach no one is going to judge, in fact most people are so busy that they really won’t notice if you wore them all the time BUT I have to agree YABU

My feet swell in the heat so sandals that start the day comfy can be really cutting in to my feet by the end of the day. I tried on just about every sandal on the high street last summer and ended up with some geox ones that are as soft as butter.

Like me and my bunions. Style goes out of the window if you can't otherwise walk in shoes at all!

FiveTreeHill · 11/04/2025 10:05

I wear Tevas. I bought them a few years ago when they were quite fashionable and have never looked back. They are so comfy.

I probably wouldn't wear them with a flow dress though. Either with linen trousers or shorts. I do wear them with short dresses for things like festivals. I think you have to rock the functional style a bit if going for that kind of sandal

Oh my goodness I never thought about Sean Connery!
Or Big Tam as he's always known as in my family!
