Lighthearted…
What’s been the most silly things you’ve been heavily criticised for on mumsnet?

Mine is .. my 4 year old having a “fruit addiction” and that all his teeth would fall out because I didn’t limit his access to the fruit bowl. He might also develop an eating disorder.

I’m pleased to report 5 years on, he has all his teeth and still enjoys fruit and vegetables with seemingly no ill effects.

Cleaning my skirting boards too often.

YankTank · 03/04/2025 08:22

Saying that Trump is an existential threat to democracy and the world order.

Not specifying the number of bread rolls on a shopping list, thinking DH could work out it out himself knowing what they were for. (He got 6 rolls for 8 people for a bbq)

Don’t you know that you shouldn’t expect the menfolk to be able to count?

Leaving an abusive marriage. I was called selfish.

Writing "word salad" on longer posts while trying to explain things, by those whose position is intractable and who want to be dismissive

I now add a final line offering mayonnaise or the dressing of one's choice on such posts as a precautionary measure.

I didn't specify the amount of beer either but there was plenty of that!

A long time ago, under a different username, I asked if I was unreasonable to nip out to the shop for five minutes while leaving chili on the lowest heat setting on my electric hob, reasoning that it wasn’t that different to a slow cooker. I was told I was unreasonable (fair enough, that’s why I asked) but some posters crucified me for it. I was a terrible selfish person who didn’t give a shit about any of my neighbours since the thought had even crossed my mind.
It wasn’t that I was being U, that is genuinely why I asked, but the ferocity of some posters really surprised me. I felt like a terrible human for even thinking it.
I was quite recently criticised for not liking going into the loft, and not being able to hoist my 5’ 2” self into the hatch using furniture and door handles. Again a fair point I suppose, but there’s no need to be nasty about it.

LadyWithLapdog · 03/04/2025 08:31

I was mocked for my username, like how I thought I was so clever (from Chekhov). On the feminist board, no less.

How very dare ask a question and accept the answer. Clearly that ruins all the fun of fighting with people on online forums.

Saying that I was teaching my large rugby playing 10 yr old ds to be careful when play fighting with his younger sister (or words to that effect).
And told that girls don't need to be mollycoddled.

Apparently I'm a raging psychopath because I hoover up spiders. I'm arachnophobic so I'm not about to stop 🤷

But if you'd written 'loo rolls' on the shopping list and he'd misread it and come back with 100 bread rolls, you'd still be complaining Grin

Pointing out John Lennon wasn’t all that good of a person! Many years ago now.

Iknowaboutpopular · 03/04/2025 08:37

Having an opinion...😂

BeefBoogyOn · 03/04/2025 08:38

For suggesting that someone who was children rich but time poor could prep a fortnight or so worth of lunch box sandwiches and stick them in the freezer. That kids wouldn't self combust or die of improper nutrition. People were disgusted that I freeze sandwiches 😂

DoYouReally · 03/04/2025 08:38

I helped out a neighbour I didn't really know when his wife went into premature labour.

Some posters thought I shouldn't answer the door anyway, that he was a migonist that saw caring for his daughter as women's work, others thought he was paving the way for me to be a permanent babysitter.

Lurkingandlearning · 03/04/2025 08:39

Saying I thought people speaking up and offering advice if they thought a stranger was about to come to physical harm was a good thing. Apparently it is offensive and on a par with calling the person stupid. And there was me thinking it was thoughtful and kind🤔

Fridgetapas · 03/04/2025 08:39

The idea that I wouldn’t force a shy small child to apologise to a complete stranger for something they had accidentally done and instead would model apologising myself in its place. I was of the opinion that it wouldn’t help that child to be pressurised and forced into speaking and calm modelling would be better instead to help them feel confident in the future.
I was ripped apart and mocked and told it was similar to letting a child not brush their teeth if they didn’t want to and children should be forced to do things (not similar AT ALL and of course I would enforce teeth brushing at home its a completely different situation).

Does freezing sandwiches actually work? What kind of fillings?

(Sorry for going off topic.... )

FeministUnderTheCatriarchy · 03/04/2025 08:41

My husband coming home from the airport because our cat was seriously unwell .

I phoned him whilst he was at the airport about to board a flight and I was on the way to the emergency vet and he came straight home.

I must have had 12-15 people comment the most scathing, vile messages about how I clearly can't function in the world by myself and that I am pathetic.

It was very, very interesting the fact that they couldn't comprehend a pet would be equally important to both the husband and wife and that my DH wouldn't have stayed away even if I insisted.

(Happy ending, our cat is okay and husband is very happy he came home lol)
