Lighthearted…
What’s been the most silly things you’ve been heavily criticised for on mumsnet?

Oh gosh there have been so many! I think the best one I was criticised for was suggesting that a child with a hobby (think trains) might want something to do with that hobby on a "what should I get as a gift" thread. I was criticised for suggesting someone with a work problem might want to ring ACAS for advice because the wise vipers of MN had decided that she didn't have a problem (she did). Oh and years ago I was criticised for using a toilet brush to get my toilet clean and I still don't know the alternative for getting limescale out below the waterline. I get criticised on virtually every thread I post on to the point where I NC regularly now because at one point I had 2 cliquey people following me around MN jumping on me on every thread no matter how innoccuous. I could have said "the sky is blue" and certain posters would quote it and comment with something snotty.

pimplebum · 03/04/2025 08:41

i got an 🙄 emoji when I said I was worried this Christmas could be my sons last ( after a spell in hospital and a life limiting diagnosis)
was ripped to shreds over everything I said , even after I’d clarified things so it was clearer

think I just posted on a day where lots of posters were having a bad day and wanted to rip a person apart , it put me off posting for long time

DoYouReally · 03/04/2025 08:38

I helped out a neighbour I didn't really know when his wife went into premature labour.

Some posters thought I shouldn't answer the door anyway, that he was a migonist that saw caring for his daughter as women's work, others thought he was paving the way for me to be a permanent babysitter.

I think you got off light. I was expecting you to say you'd be accused of trying to seduce him.

Lunchwoes · 03/04/2025 08:42

Currently being criticised by somebody on a thread because I want to put fruit and water in my DSD lunch.

Apparently I'm acting superior to her Mum.

MyCrappyTurn · 03/04/2025 08:43

I once said that I thought cyclists should wear something fluorescent / easily visible, and I was told that I shouldn't be driving if my eyes were that bad.

honeylulu · 03/04/2025 08:43

I've been told I was feministing wrong for pointing out that the way some employment law has evolved seems to reinforce the societal expectation that childcare is women's work.

I was also asked what I did to actually practice feminism myself. I politely gave a number of examples and was told i was unbearably smug and no one wanted to know. (I wondered ... why ask then?)

I daren't post on the feminism board any more, it scares me!

pimplebum · 03/04/2025 08:45

The food ones are absolutely insane I’ve seen someone berated for feeding her child beans on toast ( junk food !!!!) and a woman clutching her pearls at the very idea of feeding your husband pizza “ my husband would be horrified if I feed him kids food ! “

pointythings · 03/04/2025 08:45

Reading. Apparently it will damage my sight. This was yesterday.

Lurkingandlearning · 03/04/2025 08:46

I've obviously seen these types of posts day to day, but now I'm seeing a list I'm beginning to think of MN as Mean & Nasty now. I'll nip over to the arts and crafts forum for a detox 😀

For suggesting that someone who was children rich but time poor could prep a fortnight or so worth of lunch box sandwiches and stick them in the freezer. That kids wouldn't self combust or die of improper nutrition. People were disgusted that I freeze sandwiches 😂

Come on now. That one is fair enough... Freezing sandwiches? You do you love but that is bonkers.

OMG the driving/cycling/car seat threads bring out the very worst in people! You've reminded me I posted on a cyclist thread once (as a cyclist) but I said something people didn't want to hear because I didn't support the notion that the road belonged to cyclists, so I got accused of not being a cyclist. 😂

MellowPinkDeer · 03/04/2025 08:47

Yesterday I got a full on personal attack because my maths wasn’t right.

My maths was correct obviously , that poster was batshit and the post got deleted eventually.

We all need to respect each other’s thought processes, but… frozen sandwiches, really??

Apparently I'm a raging psychopath because I hoover up spiders. I'm arachnophobic so I'm not about to stop 🤷

They’re living creatures. That’s a shit thing to do.

I’m horrified at the phrase ‘feeding your husband…’ ugh.

How very Dickensian!

Noshowlomo · 03/04/2025 08:48

I said I bought my son a load of those cheap toys you get in machines in a restaurant (like £1 each), when out with my friends. He was spoilt and I was a terrible awful mother apparently!!! I should have bought my friends kids a load as well.

Malvala · 03/04/2025 08:48

For trying to explain why human physiology and metabolism means that calories in calories out is mostly a useless way to tackle weight loss.

See the many, many “I’m on 1200 calories why aren’t I losing weight” threads.

ShinyWorthKeeping · 03/04/2025 08:49

I commented on one thread that my oldest DD had a black belt in karate and I was told she absolutely didn't!

MeandBobbyMcGoo · 03/04/2025 08:49

That I was ageist for being concerned about my 90yr old neighbour who lived alone.

MyCrappyTurn · 03/04/2025 08:50

@JaneandtheLaundry, OMG, that's hilarious.

And yes, I'm both a driver and a cyclist, and try to be reasonable when I'm doing either - you're right, driving / cycling threads are insane.

Also anything about cycle helmets.

Sheeparelooseagain · 03/04/2025 08:53

During covid for going for walks that were "too long" or more than once a day.

Peacepleaselouise · 03/04/2025 08:53

MyCrappyTurn · 03/04/2025 08:43

I once said that I thought cyclists should wear something fluorescent / easily visible, and I was told that I shouldn't be driving if my eyes were that bad.

Maybe it’s because you did too much reading like @pointythings

For accepting cups of coffee from my junior staffers. 😂

I'm toxic, apparently. The Problem. And yet I have excellent relationships with my juniors and stay in touch with many of them who go on to greater things.

I'm everything wrong with the modern workplace.
