Lighthearted…
What’s been the most silly things you’ve been heavily criticised for on mumsnet?

OP posts:
cadburyegg · 03/04/2025 09:39

Got asked just a few days ago if I “used my ex husband for childcare”. For his own children.

Coffeeishot · 03/04/2025 09:39

In another name I was chastised when I said the Captain Tom.moore thing was insane and dodgy!

BogRollBOGOF · 03/04/2025 08:58

For having the audacity to give my child with multiple food allergies McDonalds which I knew was reliably allergen-free.

Naturally pointing out that McDonalds was healthier than facial swelling and a week of diarrhea was poo-pooed as a defence Grin

He's a typical MN long, lean teenager now so clearly not too broken by his early nutritional complexities.

Have you seen the recent thread.about McDonald's chips and ice cream ?

NotSmallButFunSize · 03/04/2025 09:42

That I was totally unreasonable to have my children at home after school while I was WFH - they should be in childcare so I can "work properly" and they could be "adequately cared for"

They are 8, 12 and 15 - they just watch TV after school FFS!

Cosycover · 03/04/2025 09:45

For letting my child play GTA online. Letting kids have mcdonalds. Letting kids have ipads. The 3 unforgivable sins.

BlondiePortz · 03/04/2025 09:48

I have been called a man a few times, I then go look in my knickers to remind myself what I am

Poppymeldrum · 03/04/2025 09:49

I was called all the names under the sun for calling dps dd 'an evil, spiteful little bitch'

I stand by it-she pulled some awful stunts to break dp and I up,didn't expect to work (we where meant to pay her way for every single whim and kiss her arse at all times) and caused so much trouble, simply for her own amusement

When I said she should get a job and pay a tiny amount of rent, she went scorched earth on me (my own dc all got jobs and all paid a small amount in housekeeping at her age)

She contacted my narcissistic family (who I'm nc with) telling them so many lies, which in turn caused so much trouble for me,ditto my friends (they ignored her) and as her final hurrah, she found some 'personal photos' on dps laptop and sent them to every member of my family, their friends, her mother, her grandad,my workplace/colleagues and then put them on the Internet

I was in the wrong for not kissing her arse, paying her way (on utter crap like taxis, plants, food she didn't eat, posh oat/almond milks she didn't drink and her nails and hair) but she wasn't in the wrong for not even thinking of getting a job and sitting around on the sofa waiting for a rich man to marry

I was paying for her food (about 3/4 she'd demand what to buy but didn't eat but just binned it) clothes (that she'd just dump on the floor or cut them up) and her phone

She was 18 at the time-plenty old enough to get a part time job and pay her own way (I wasn't asking the earth-just £25 a week)

That I would have supported but I'm damned if I'm slogging my guts out at work to pay for a spoilt brat who was trying her hardest to destroy my life and very almost succeeded

I guess some people had evil stepmother and I took the brunt of it

Maitri108 · 03/04/2025 09:50

I called someone a fan girl and was accused of being like the Taliban.

I got criticised for leaving my toddler asleep, in the pushchair next to the open back door in the back garden while I sat in the kitchen watching Doctors. (near to the open back door, child in full view).

I was lazy for not bringing the child inside to either put in their cot or wake up and why was I watching TV in the daytime anyway???

My gran put all 4 of hers down in the orchard. Was good for them hahaha

JaneandtheLaundry · 03/04/2025 08:41

Oh gosh there have been so many! I think the best one I was criticised for was suggesting that a child with a hobby (think trains) might want something to do with that hobby on a "what should I get as a gift" thread. I was criticised for suggesting someone with a work problem might want to ring ACAS for advice because the wise vipers of MN had decided that she didn't have a problem (she did). Oh and years ago I was criticised for using a toilet brush to get my toilet clean and I still don't know the alternative for getting limescale out below the waterline. I get criticised on virtually every thread I post on to the point where I NC regularly now because at one point I had 2 cliquey people following me around MN jumping on me on every thread no matter how innoccuous. I could have said "the sky is blue" and certain posters would quote it and comment with something snotty.

I was criticised for NOT using a loo brush, eg I wipe off any marks on the inside of the loo with tissue, rather than the brush, and then use the brush for a scrub over with loo cleaner. Apparently, even though it’s a small but thick wedge of paper, and nothing could possibly get onto my hands, which get washed anyway, I am “rank” .

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 03/04/2025 09:51

Making my guests take their shoes off in the house.

Having a clutter free house, because being tidy and clean means I can't have a nice cosy house. It must be piled high with bits and pieces. The thought of clutter and having stuff everywhere makes me all jittery and uncomfortable.

Not specifying the number of bread rolls on a shopping list, thinking DH could work out it out himself knowing what they were for. (He got 6 rolls for 8 people for a bbq)

This is JUST the sort of thing my DH would do!

Are you sure you’re “rank” and not “grim”? That’s surely the standard term for everyone who doesn’t douse themselves and their family in bleach every time they do a wee.

Mummyneedsacoffee · 03/04/2025 09:59

Being a cyclist. People are quick to attack without actually knowing me. I’m very considerate to other road users and part of a club with strict road etiquette but I’m still a nuisance, aggressive (no idea where that even came from) and jump red lights (never in my life) apparently. Again no evidence - just assume!

HowardTJMoon · 03/04/2025 10:00

For being a man on a parenting forum whose owners have repeatedly said that men are welcome to join.

gamerchick · 03/04/2025 10:00

I said dishwashers were lazy once. Was great fun Grin

rolloverbeethoven · 03/04/2025 10:00

Being a man. (I'm not).

Poppymeldrum · 03/04/2025 10:02

I forgot the one time I posted to say id been sexally assaulted at work-7 times In 8 years (retail)

One poster told me that this couldn't have happened,I was lying and 'why doesn't a manager follow you around?'

My own personal bodyguard!

Another poster called me a liar when I said I've caught god knows how many teens having sex in our toilets/vaping/smoking/getting pissed/shoving boxer shorts down the toliet and shitting on them/junkies shooting up/men 'accidently' going into the ladies-the list is endless

Apparently we should have a member of staff on each toliet door, supervising who goes in/out

We are that short staffed,we are all doing the work of 3 people-we cannot have 3 members of staff just standing outside the toliet doors all shift

Tell me you've never worked with the public without saying 'I've never done retail...'

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 03/04/2025 10:03

Not critical exactly but I often spell words wrong and get a PA and sanctimonious as fuck helpful "I think you mean/I think you'll find it's spelt" response. You can feel the glee coming off them that they get to point it out.

There’s a circle in hell reserved for sanctimonious spell checkers like that!

In another name I was chastised when I said the Captain Tom.moore thing was insane and dodgy!

We all got that. Posts deleted and everything Grin

It was obviously a con, pandemic insanity that was.

I called someone a fan girl and was accused of being like the Taliban.

😂 yeah I've had a similar one of those too. Some people are extreme.

Quitting potty training because my dd clearly wasn’t ready and was crying fearfully at the potty/toilet. I was told that I should force her the same way I should force her to brush her teeth. Last time I checked, not brushing teeth can be detrimental to her oral health whereas having a few more months in nappies is unlikely to cause any deep rooted issues.

PuppiesProzacProsecco · 03/04/2025 10:11

My first ever post on Mumsnet was asking AIBU to be angry at my MIL for strapping my 9 month old DS into her car in his bouncy chair using two seatbelts because she couldn't remember how to do up the straps on his car seat.

I was extra angry as DS (and bouncy chair) was positioned behind 14 yr old DD (in front passenger seat) in the car and they'd both have been seriously injured or worse in a crash.

I was ripped apart for not purchasing a rear facing carseat for DS for MILs car even though that had nothing to do with my post. It's not as if he'd have been safer with the bouncy chair faced backwards! This was over 10 years ago too so rear facing for older babies just wasn't as widely accepted as it is now.

I already had horrendous postnatal anxiety and OCD and the posters attacking me actually said things like "you can't blame your MIL for risking your baby's life when you clearly don't care either". God, it was awful. I'm amazed I ever came back on here.
