Are people still driving Tesla’s?

EddyF · 26/03/2025 19:20

There was a time in my area (London) where every other car driven was a Tesla, including quite a few Ubers I used to order. Now, there are hardly any (I am not saying people don’t drive them anymore). Has anyone else noticed this?

Elon is so unlikable to me including his face. I don’t even think he is ‘smart’ as Trump/his supporters likes to call him. I will admit I did love the cars when I didn’t know much about him. Now, I can’t stand the cars as they just remind me of the awful Elon.

Why wouldn't they? If one doesn't work, there's lots of others. Again, not known cameras to be faulty. The owner could have sentry turned off of course but, because of idiots,it's best to keep it switched on.

tedibear · 27/03/2025 13:32

Everyone here seems to be getting them (I’m in central Scotland). In the last year, 5 neighbours have bought one. I was starting to wonder if there was a great deal going on 😂

Because if the movement isn't sudden none of the 4 cameras that record in sentry mode (if activated) will be activated. If it recorded everything the battery would flatten even quickly and the flash drive recordings are saved to would fill up pretty quickly. Sentry mode is deactivated when the battery reaches 20% anyway, which even if it was charged to 80% when parked means if you go away for a week then it'll stop working before you get back

SerendipityJane · 27/03/2025 13:40

Tryingtokeepgoing · 27/03/2025 13:31

Sentry mode (a) requires you to have it activated, which many people don't as it drains the battery at a rate of ~ 5% to 10% per 24 hours and (b) relies on a combination of proximity and sudden movement. So its unlikely to pick up a person casually walking by and keying it, or spraying graffitti on it. Like many things Musk related, it over promises and under delivers!

So Teslas aren't quite all they are cracked up to be ?

Righty ho.

You really aren't selling these cars to me 😀

Sorry! They were great when they first launched; genuinely market leading tech in 2012 or whenever they went on sale as your choice of EV was basically a Yesla Models S, Nissan Leaf or a Renault Zoe. We are now nearly 14 years on, and while Tesla have constantly updated software, and tweaked the exterior and interior a bit, there's nothing market leading about any of their models now.

They are however cheap and reliable, which, as a mass market car, is all many people want... I mean, the VW Beetle (the people's car) was delevoped under Hitler ;)

Piaha · 27/03/2025 13:48

Anyone carving or damaging a Tesla is a complete knob, they’re not harming Tesla or Elon, just ordinary people who got the car they wanted. There’s way to show your disapproval if they want without resorting to just damaging random people’s property.

Why does everyone single out Tesla because of Elon Musk...

...and then will end up buying one of these things and spending a fortune on Shein?

Also I'm with others. I wouldn't buy a Tesla cos they are shite.

And the automatic default on the doors terrifies me (the default if you have a electral fault in other cars is the doors unlock. In Teslas they don't. So you can find yourself in a car, on fire as the result of an electral fault or stuck in a flood, unable to get out the car.) Theres been a number of incidents with this problem with horrific endings.

FWIW, there are similar types of reasons by I wouldn't buy a Chinese car too on the same basis.

If you have a Tesla, also have a window hammer in the car which is accessable in case of emergency. (I'm serious).

This.

The number of people on the thread who appear to think it's acceptable to damage private property is horrible. So you don't like EM, so what. Send him an angry email or better still, get off your backside, fly to the States and campaign outside his office. That will affect him personally and it will take a bit more effort and bravery, than vandalising a car when the owner isn't looking.

Don't persecute innocent people by damaging their cars. You may as well attack people in the street for wearing clothes produced in sweatshops.

We will be buying a Tesla in the next few months. We are hoping all of the weirdos who are selling their cars for their morals, will make them cheaper.

Plenty of vandals have been identified by Tesla cameras for keying them, pics have gone viral and they’ve been made famous. One of the cars belonged to a disabled woman.

I hope these arseholes get sent to prison and pay huge fines.

Oh I agree, vandalism cannot be condoned in any way. But, while sentry mode can help it doesn't cover everything. Ex Tesla driver, speaking from experience...

TooManyNiblings · 26/03/2025 19:27

There are still loads round here, I can't imagine anyone is going to replace their car based on him having been so much of a twat. I certainly couldn't afford to just replace my car on a whim.

I agree, but most have them in lease so I’d assume people may think again when lease renewal time comes about. I know I would!

Although I’ve always found the Teslas to be ugly. The only positive is the Batmobile doors. The rest of it looks dated visually.

I find it quite funny people are trying to use the excuse of "I bought this before I knew he was a [insert label of your choice here]".

Really? It's not that long ago he was defaming that poor chap online who was trying to help those Thai boys stuck in a cave by calling him "pedo guy". Or smoking weed on a podcast. The evidence that he's a wrong'un has been there all along if you'd bothered to pay the slightest bit of attention to what he was doing.

As for Teslas, I've always thought they're hideously ugly cars - and you usually only ever see them in boring white as well. So, if there's one good thing to come out of that idiot being in the White House, it's that there might be fewer of them on the road.

Calling the man a paedo was nasty and childish, I agree. Smoking weed on a podcast is hardly the crime of the century though.

But I've never understood why people expect tech billionaires to be nice people tbh. They are basically uber geeks who are also hugely competitive and single minded. Facebook started out as a project when Mark Zuckerberg was at Harvard for men to rate the looks of the female students!

Your post confirms what I already thought of most Tesla drivers!

Boycotting is a very normal and valid response to unethical business/politics. Hardly weird! I also hope the prices and share prices drop - good luck with your larger than otherwise negative equity!

cramptramp · 27/03/2025 15:10

Of course they are. I still see loads around here.

Being a geek, competitive or single minded doesn’t mean you can’t be ethical or nice though! Loads of introverted, career focused techs are nice people, my husband being one! He’s not an entrepreneur mind, but I don’t think you can make out that tech minded people are unkind by nature.

Sure. But that combined with being a presumably fairly ruthless businessman who has accumulated billions in a hugely competitive market.....

JustSawJohnny · 27/03/2025 15:33

I see a lot of them when out and about.

I do feel for people who got them before they knew what Musk was like. I'm sure quite a few would rather offload it but not everyone can afford to take the financial hit of changing a car on a whim.

I am really glad I don't have one, though. I'd hate to drive one now.

JustWalkingTheDogs · 27/03/2025 15:40

It’s only because it’s very visible that people are choosing to dislike Teslas. The whole setting fire and vandalism towards the cars just devalues anyone’s opinions about Musk.

I truly wish people would be so ethically aware about other big businesses they use. SHEIN, Temu, VW, Mercedes for starters.

Amazon have donated to Trump, as have Uber and Boeing, but I’m betting most people who have posted on here still use Amazon.

GasPanic · 27/03/2025 15:45

I mean I guess it might influence a few peoples purchase decisions.

But the expectation that someone is going to throw away 30-60 grands worth of car on the basis they don't like the CEO of the company that made it is a bit fanciful.

Thats weird, because i have to keep telling people not to use the manual override thats in the exact same place any normal mechanical door handle would be on the front doors, or just under the seat carpet on the rears...

That makes no sense, as there's a manual override...or at least, there was in the two I had
